The Jacks are three years into the transition, close to conference affiliation and unexpectedly have two or three more scholarships to hand out. Unlike the past couple of years, there isn't a lot of uncertainty about the future status of players. Coach Nagy and his staff have their best opportunity in probably four years to bring in some talent. Good thing, because the need remains great. The Rabbits have been under-manned every season since the transition began. Williams and Callahan are promising young talents. Moss and the recruit from Sioux City are a good start for next year. But there's a long way to go.

          Ryan James
          MinnesotaPreps.com Staff

Brady will make his college choice in the spring

Ryan James: What are your expectations coming into the season as a top five ranked team?

Brady Fairbanks: My expectations for this season are very high! I have been waiting to play my senior season for a long time and now it is here and I am very excited. I also expect to be in the state tournament competing for a class A state title.

RJ: How is Cass Lake-Bena looking as a team coming back?

BF: We will be quick and have some height, but we do lack a serious low post presence. We have four players that return with big game experience, and a group of talented underclassman that are looking to turn some heads this season.

RJ: What are some of your goals for this coming season?

BF: My main goal is to win that state championship. I am also looking to have fun, win some games, and never stop running (game or practice). Then trying to find that right fit for me, college wise.

RJ: What are you looking to do for college next year and what are some of your options?

BF: I decided to wait until the spring to sign. I have gone on some visits and had a very good time. I can play with a few of the teams from the NSIC and also the NCC, but I'm also getting the phone calls and stuff from a few Division one schools. The schools contacting me include Air force, Northern Colorado, Colorado State, Chicago Loyola, Northern Florida and South Dakota State. We will just have to see how the season goes, but I am very confident with my team and also my self to excel this year. I appreciate your time and thanks again Ryan for everything that you and the other staff at Preps and the Breakdown do for MN basketball

Sam Willard, a 6-foot-8 senior from Pierre, will play basketball at the University of Pacific next fall. He averaged 15 points and nine rebounds to help the Governors finish second in the State AA last season. Pacific lost to Boston College in overtime in the first round of the NCAA tourney last season.

Heelan wins battle of MRAC co-leaders, 61-53
Crusaders top North for sixth win in a row

By Terry Hersom Journal sports editor

These are the nights when it takes no imagination to see why Clint Sargent has already nailed down an NCAA Division I basketball scholarship.

Scoring 20 of his game-high 25 points in the second half Tuesday night, Sargent propelled Bishop Heelan to a 61-53 victory over city rival North in a battle of Missouri River Activities Conference co-leaders.

A 6-4 senior, Sargent is playing the point guard role for the first time this winter. However, he is certainly no stranger to the "closer'' role.

"Clint's strongest point is the way he finishes games,'' said Heelan Coach Tom Betz. "The end of games is when he kind of rises up. He did that for us last year, too. There were probably seven times he had 20-plus in the second half.'' . . . (read more)

Where are we sitting at for schollies and our roster next year? Correct me if I make an error here.

                  Senior
                  Loney - forward (scholarship)
                  Casey - guard (walk-on)
                  Wipf - guard (walk-on)

                  Junior
                  Cadwell - guard (scholarship)

                  Sophomore
                  Callahan - guard (scholarship)
                  Yackley - forward (walk-on)
                  Williams - forward (scholarship)
                  Basset - forward (scholarship)
                  Engen - center (scholarship)

                  Redshirt Freshman
                  Cordova - forward? (scholarship)
                  Hoogeveen - guard (walk-on?)

                  Freshman
                  Moss - guard? (scholarship)
                  Sargent - guard? (scholarship)

According to my calculations, that would give us four (or three) scholarships to work with, recognizing the fact that two slots need to be left open for the verbals commitments for the 2009-10 season.

A name that I had heard in the past is Oak Hill Academy's Red Team D.J. Murray a 5'8" Guard from Houston, TX. Oak Hill has 2 teams. The Gold team which is nationally ranked on a yearly basis and the Red team which stays in state more often.

I would think atleast two JUCO players would fit nicely next year as their scholarships would then be up as our two Madison recruits would be coming to campus. Good timing for all. If the maximum is thirteen, that would mean we would potentially have four full scholarships still available for next year. Is that right?

It is my understanding that Casey's finacial needs are being fully met without the use of an athletic scholarship (as are Yackley's).

Mackenzie Casey & Blake Yackley are the non-traditional

Ryan Hoogeveen is the invitee and is red shirting

                            Troy Wipf is the traditional

From what I can tell they all seem to be doing a fine job for State given their talent levels and realistic expectations. It seems to me that our Walk-on program is strong.

Just wondering if Cadsev or anyone else can chime in on Emmanuel Yuyada from Roosevelt and what type of player/prospect he is. He seems to be improving all the time and is starting to put up some really nice pts/rebounding numbers. I've never seen the kid play but from what I understand he is a big and athletic guard. I'd think the fact that he has been playing basketball for such a short time that he would still have some more upside in his game if he has alot of athletic ability.

                              Thoughts anyone?

It sounds like we're letting James Granstra make the decision on his own as we haven't been pursuing him too much lately. Garrett's brother has only gotten NDSU, SDSU, and a few D-2 schools to extend offers to him. And Momma Williams really would like Jamal to come down here. That's the updates I have heard.
