    Re: 2007 Roster

Quality Big Men are rare within the mid-majors. Beran and Berte are going to be huge assets. They will be oversized. Rember Butler last season who played Florida tougher than any team in last years NCAA. They didn't have a dominant big man. They just shot well, were well conditioned and executed. Get used to it. We aren't going to see any Gred Odens or Kevin Durants at SDSU. Maybe we can get an Eric Coleman or Ronny Turiaf every now and then, but we will get a lot of 6-4 to 6-7 guys who can shoot well.

      You're probably right.

The era I'm talking about had far fewer major college teams and most of the peer College Division teams of that era (Southern Illinois, Northern Iowa (State College of Iowa, Iowa State Teachers College) and Evansville have long since become mid-majors. They had trouble recruiting large players then and continue to have problems.

        Re: 2007 Roster

There are a lot of big men out there, but not many have the athleticism required to compete at the DI level. As noted only the elite programs are able to find that rare big man who possesses all the tools. The trend is now towards athletic, long, versatle 6'7-6'8 players like Beren and Berte and some of the players we have received committments from and are persuing. I think the only time we will see a 6'10-7'0 player is if they are a project or a late bloomer that Coach Cunningham has potential to develop.

          Re: 2007 Roster

The way I see it is that offense in college basketball usually comes from the the 1,2 & 3 positions. Not even a lot of big conference schools can find big men that can consistenly score, and if they can they are headed for the NBA. Programs like SDSU just need servicable big men that can make easy shots, play defense, and rebound. Any added points are a bonus. Alot of people point at Butler's team and say that you don't need anybody over 6'6" on the floor to win, but they were the exception, not the rule. One of the main reason we lost so many games last year was because we started a 6'6 center and a 6'6 power forward. Where it hurt us is that it leaves the lane open and makes it easy for guards to drive inside, because there is not threat to get their shot blocked or contested. Next year will be different because Berte and Beran are both long and athletic and it will be much harder for teams to get inside looks. Plus, Beran has proven that he can score and has good range . Does anybody have any projections on starting 5. I would guess 1. Casey, 2. Callahan, 3. Williams, 4. Beran, & 5. Berte.

I'd say that is a very probable starting 5 other than Casey at 1. With all the guards on the roster next year that spot is going to be handled by a lot of people I'm thinking. Unless someone rises above everyone else this summer/fall.

I will take this wild guess.

              1 Palarca
              2 Callahan
              3 Williams
              4 Beran
              5 Berte

I have sources that say Cassiday is going to push Williams for the 3 spot. Moss and Sargent are the real deal also. Unless something changes Casey will get a lot of time in practice and support from the bench.

Wouldn't you want Callahan starting at the point, and maybe back him up with Casey? Seems to me like you'd rather play true freshmen at the 2 spot rather than at the point. (This being the basketball opinion of a computer guy, so take it for what it's worth).

Still, this discussion strikes me as being a big upgrade from what we had to talk about in years past . . .

Somebody take Kai's starting spot? That would shock me.
I like our starting five. Our bench is still very young though and would be my biggest concern.
I think we will be good this year, but will fall hard the next year if we dont bring in veteran posts to replace Ben and Mo.

Is it fair to say that Coach has to win this year? Dont get me wrong, I am a fan, but I think the pressure is on for significant improvement or SDSU will "move in another direction".

Speaking of Kai, Mrs Williams did Kai make the Canadian national team this year? Got my fingers crossed he did.

Ditto, although it's great we that we can be two solid deep at the three, I think Cassidy still needs time to learn the system. I am sure Cassidy is a great athlete, but Kai has one year on him in knowing the system. Knowlege is power.

I really don't think Nagy is in any kind of trouble from a wins/loss standpoint quite yet. I do think he needs to show some kind of stability with the team and avoid additional transfers. In terms of a starting lineup I would be willing to bet even the coaching staff is unsure who is going to command the majority of the playing time at the 1 and 2 position. IMHO Williams,Beran and Berte are a lock at 3,4,5. The Point Guard and Shooting Guard is a bit of mystery. I thought Callahan was being annoited as the point guard of the present and future. Then I heard at the end of the year he was going to be a 2? I think Moss and Sargent are going to make it very difficult to redshirt them as they are both athletic guys who can get to the hole. Sargent seems to be more of a pure shooter. Callahan may have more difficulty in getting off his shot because of size at the 2. Palarca is an unknown, but seems to be an uptempo guy that can distribute the ball, score and create chaos on the defensive end with the other point guard. Casey has gotten a lot of experience over the last 3 years and I think has gotten better each year and will see the floor to spark the team. It will be interesting who from the freshman class Cassady,Moss,Sargent and Palarca will be redshirted.

I'm with gateway on this five. Not sure how much scoring we can expect from the 1 & 2 spot this year, none of them are proven at the DI level. Kai will be great but if teams can key on him it will be much more difficult for him to get 15 pts a game. Things are looking up but I think we can all admit it the alternative would be almost impossible. I'm definitely excited to see this team on the court and hope I can make it to midnight madness.

According to Terry's recent blog there may be another guard on the way? Reminds me of the draft do you go for needs or best available player:

                              Anyway …

While the SDSU football team has given up on finding a junior college transfer after losing one prospect one last week, the men’s basketball team is still hoping to land a juco this summer. Don’t be surprised if that player winds up being a guard
