Do you have a good source for that as I have never understood a prop 48 case to work that way. It was very different than a redshirt as Anthony could not practice with the team this past year. Maybe the rules have changed, but in the past a recruit lost a year of elgibility. It would be wonderful if Cordova was able to play 4 years.

      Re: 2007 Roster

It looks as though we are all kind of on the same track. I found the rule in the NCAA manual:
      http://www.ncaa.org/library/membersh..._d1_manual.pdf

On page 172 of the 510 page PDF document (not the acutal page number in the manual) rule 14.3.3 states you may only compete in 3 seasons if you are a non-qualifier out of high school.

There are 2 exceptions. One is that is if by the 5th year the student has 80% of his degree requirements satisfied, he can be granted a 4th season.

Also, if a degree is obtained before the start of the 5th year a 4th season may be awarded.

I would say the first exception is very likely and considering all student-athletes must abide by the 40/60/80 rule, Cordova should be able to play 4 seasons.

        BTown,

Thanks for the footwork. I started to look but just didn't want to commit the time. Looking forward to seeing him on the court.

If you look at the new website they have the incoming players listed on the roster with the exception of Beran and Berte. We are still an awful small Division I team even with those two added.

The Jacks roster for 07-08 season is on gojacks.com. Ben Beran's name was not on the roster. Does anyone know if he isn't going to be playing?

I'm pretty positive Beran is on the roster and we will know on Berte shortly. A couple of 6'7 and 6'8 players who can play inside and rebound would be a big help.

Why isn't Cordova listed for 07-08?

Considering Beran and Berte aren't listed either I'm not overly worried yet.

                        Berte returning for SDSU
Charges against senior dropped in December

Mohamed Berte will rejoin the South Dakota State men's basketball team - although it might not be as if he never left.

Jackrabbits coach Scott Nagy said Monday that Berte, a 6-foot-8 senior center from the Ivory Coast, successfully completed the spring semester and will return to the team for the 2007-08 season.

A transfer from Indian Hills Community College, Berte averaged a team-high 7.2 rebounds and started 19 of 20 games for SDSU in 2005-06 before being suspended - along with then freshman Andre Gilbert - due to a sexual assault accusation.

Gilbert was charged with two counts of rape and one count of first-degree burglary, while Berte was charged with aiding and abetting second-degree rape and first-degree burglary.

Gilbert was found not guilty in Brookings County court on Dec. 14 and has since signed to play at Kansas State. Charges against Berte were dropped one week later, and he resumed coursework at SDSU in the spring semester and began working out in the hope of rejoining the team. . . . (read more)

I think Berte is going to be a monster on the boards this year. Adding Berte, Beran and Cordova should help our rebounding and inside presence significantly. One more Juco power forward would really give the depth we have lacked for the last several years. This team all of sudden has some experience.

Thank you for being optimistic. I'll take the "wait and see" approach. No doubt we gain SOME experience with Beran and Berte returning but their still isn't necessarily a lot of continuity or team chemistry. I have little doubt the Nagy and his staff will be working hard and those issues as will the players. Time will tell.

I have to agree with JACKGUYII. When Berte and Ben played together 2 years ago, they played down low together very well. We have heard the rumors of Mo coming back so it is nice to finally have it stated in the Argus. We do have a nice mix, but too bad it will be for one year. We need to get posts for the future.

                                Berte would add some size.

I'm writing from 600 miles away and 40 years in the past. When I was at SDSU during the Cambrian period the primary difference between DI and DII (University Division and College Division actually) was the quality at the post, and frankly in four years of watching the North Central Conference, Tom Black and Phil Jackson were the only two that could have made a major program. There was a huge difference between Black at 6'9 and Otterness who was a not very mobile 6-7.

Look at pictures of Super Bowl I. People were pretty small back in my youth. Even then, 6-7 seemed very small for the inside game. Why is everyone so short? This is D-1. Even back then, it was relatively easy to find good guard play. Jack Theeler could make an impact at Minnesota and transfer back to USD. Players like that were a dime a dozen compared to Jackson.

Maybe the continued problems with recruiting size is a recognition that there's lots more major college programs now and that the North Central was much higher up in the pecking order then than it was in 2000. If that's the case SDSU should have made the move twenty years ago.
