    Great Expectations

Brookings' Carlson to be first hometown player for Jackrabbits in 16 years

    Matt Zimmer • mzimmer@argusleader.com • February 12, 2009

Growing up in Brookings, it goes without saying that Brayden Carlson has long dreamed of suiting up for South Dakota State. But that's a tougher task than one might think, as it's been 16 years since a Bobcats prepster played for the Jackrabbit men's basketball team.

Carlson, a 6-foot-5 guard who also started at quarterback for the Bobcats football team last season, will bring that drought to an end this fall, and if his senior season on the hardwood is any indication, he's not going to settle for being just some token local guy.

Lately, Carlson's versatile game and physical skills have been on full display, as the senior has averaged more than 30 points during the Bobcats' last five contests and more than 22 points per game for the year. . . . (read more)

He's putting up big numbers playing in class AA where you don't see too many 20pt games let alone 30pt games.

Does he project to be more of a point guard or shooting guard?

When recruited initially projected to be a redshirt....not sure what will happen.

So by the looks of it, SDSU got a steal with Brayden?

Dunno, but he looks alot like Woodside physically in that picture. A point guard that is big, strong, and can shoot? Thats one of the major things we've been missing the last couple seasons.

One big advantage for Carlson physically is being 6'5" as opposed to 5'11"

Looked very athletic, I don't think he is 6'5" closer to 6'3" not that an inch or two is that big of a deal. I'm certainly excited that he is going to be a Jackrabbit.

He had kind a quiet 31 last night. Thought he would do more shooting in the 3rd quarter and didn't think he had a real good game and then saw the stats. Brookings down by 9 with 3:00 left and he pretty much brought them back himself to down by 2 and then they had to start fouling. Good looking ball player, though, very athletic...

I went to the game last night in Yankton to watch Carlson. As already stated, I was impressed with his athletisism. He shot the ball well from the outside and could take it to the hole. Yankton's coach had good things to say about Brayden in the Yankton paper this morning. I think he is going to be a nice addition.

                            LOL - you're right, officially he's 6' 4 & 5/8" but in the embellished world of sport's weight & heights it's 6'5"

Hey, if he is indeed 6'5" he is. Not that big a deal. I walked by him and he didn't seem any taller than me but its hard to judge an inch. I was wearing some pretty flat shoes and we didn't go back-to-back. If you've got the official number I'm all for that. Again, it doesn't matter one bit.

I'm 6'3 & 3/4" and I always put 6'4" on my hunting license. So Brayden is indeed 6'5" and probably growing.
