Nobody has a clue if Pete will be a good coach. We can say this or that but it will all sort itself out shortly. As far as players leaving we must remember players do NOT commit to a school. They commit to a coach period end of story.

Saw your post last night and was wondering why it wasn't registering in my Youtube feed; it's up now. Thank you for putting it on my radar.

Sorry, this video is proof this young man should not be limited to posting on Youtube and freelancing. Also, is it wrong that the fact he called out Zim's tweet about the dueling reactions to Rogers' vs. Henderson's departures resonated with me?

I disagree. Players commit to a school for a variety of reasons. The coach might be one reason.

We have no idea if he is a good coach? He was the head coach of a Junior College at the ag of 24 and won two national championships there.

I do not see SDSU being able to hire a proven coach with the salary they have. This is the type of coach that they will have to hire and hope it works out.
Unless we have somebody on here that has the money to make SDSU compaible to the other DI universities. That is for both players and coaches.

well I will say i COULD be wrong here, but as I think back through Jacks coaches in general and MBB coaches specifically, I would say this is VERY MUCH the tradition and it is a tradition that we have had an incredible amount of success with

Gene Zulk is the first coach I really remember. I was alive before he was the HC, but he is the first one I remember. I might be wrong on this. maybe after he finished playing with the Jacks he became a college HC somewhere else before coming back but I do not think so. I believe the Jacks job was the first HC job for coach Zulk

after Zulk was Jim Thorsen. Thor was the assistant to Zulk when they went to the championship game in 85. before becoming the assistant for the Jacks, I am very close to positive Thor was a HS coach. The Jacks were his first college HC job

I know without a doubt that Nagy was an assistant under Thor for 3 years and never a HC prior to that. he left when Thor left and he stayed an assistant

I was living in TX at the time so Coach Soderberg is probably the coach i am least familiar with, but again i am nearly positive he was an assistant before coming here. this was his first HC job

he left after 2 years and we hired Nagy for his first HC Job
we were the first HC job for Otz
we were the first HC job for Hendo

BTW, we are also the first HC job for AJ, and Stig, and Jimmy, and DJ

all things considered the fact that Pete was a HC previously at the Juco level probably makes him one of the most experienced coaches (HC experience wise) we have ever hired for any program

all in all, it seems to be working out more than ok for us.

Coach Soderberg had been a head coach at D-III Loras College in Dubuque, IA prior to SDSU.

When Northern Iowa and Wyoming are doubling (tripling?) their mbb coaching salaries that is somewhat concerning. Not to mention being in a stronger alignment which I guess goes hand in hand. However great of a coach the UNI guy is Wyoming has Sundance Wicks. With all due respect to Wicks, I'm sure he'll do big things, I'd rather have Henderson or Peterson.

We have done very well on our small school budget but we are still far far behind most other mid-majors and certainly the larger schools in terms of budget and salaries. I think it's all getting ridiculous but we are going to need to expand financially somehow if we want to stay a top tier mid major. I'm not sure how UNI gets its income as it's a small dog in their state. Where we really are going to need to advance over time is TV contract income. That's how the big conference make so much of their money. The issue is our league is in such a small market. Until we change to a league that has bigger followings and is in higher populated areas, it'll be an uphill battle to bring in more money to pay for these salaries, NIL, etc.

I wonder about this statement for the non SDSU fans who thought the school should look at Craig Smith (outsiders were also high on Krabbenhoft, JR Blount). I imagine Smith has 3 paths back to a HC gig
                          1) wait a year or X years on the coaching carousel - X years being if his contract does not allow him to take a new gig until X date
                          2) take an assistant job (at a p4)
                          3) take a HC job at a reduced salary (compared to Utah, probably even Utah State)

I imagine he'd opt for 1 and 2 than try and build himself back up with 3 since this one would most likely take longer than a year to move on again.

That's a pretty good list of coaches.

Gene Zulk, I believe was the HC at Brookings HS before SDSU.

I know Thorsen was the coach of the Webster Bearcats before he joined the SDSU staff.

                            • Gene Zulk, a former Jackrabbit player, came to SDSU from a head coaching job at Huron High School. i believe he initially came to be an assistant for the Jacks and was rather quickly promoted to head coach to succeed Jim Marking, who’d had a great run.

YEAH I really overstated it on that one, saying I was nearly positive. should have just left it at I was in TX during his time and least knowledgeable about him.
