In your mind what makes Klink a good candidate? The fact that he’s been around forever? The fact that he’s been at SDSU forever?
Saying our next head coach has to have been a head coach is narrow minded and dumb. Everyone has to start somewhere.
Hopefully all head coaches don’t die tonight. We could never have one again.

So, yes... I'm an idiot.

AJ’s success speaks for itself. I can’t comment on Nagy. TJ came from being a top assistant at a nationally ranked Power 5 ( now 4 ) school. Hendo was TJ’s pick as his top assistant and he told me repeatedly that Eric was a great coach and will be the head coach of a Power 4 school someday. I find it interesting that the main reason Drake selected Hendo was because he’s shown the ability to take a well performing program and maintaining it. Drake is very unusual in the sense they’ve had success over a reasonable period of time. And whomever coaches there has been the benefactor of its success by moving on to higher paying programs. I would argue Hendo will have a lot of pressure on him just trying to maintain. That’s a tough situation. Devries had his son, McCollum brought his roster from NCAA D2 Northwest Missouri. It makes sense that your top guys will wear a different shade of blue next year, much like what Rogers did to your program in football. It sucks, but that’s todays world.
Your AD is as good as they come, especially at our level. I’d trust his pick and process and grab some popcorn to watch what comes next.

Usually when they have gone internal they’ve announced it the same day. Makes me think that it will be an external hire.

RE Klink … two coaches left and he didn’t go with them. Was he asked to join and declined or did they fill his spot with someone they thought was better? Two new staffs retained him, which is not unusual but both times new guys came into the program (Hendo for TJ and Petey for Hendo) and became the lead assistant. Klink is SDSU through and through but in this ever changing landscape of college basketball not sure he’s the right guy.

Anyone who has met coach for longer than five minutes, can tell you what kind of person he is. This is a step up, and I will be cheering for Drake next year. (unless they happen to bump into the Rabbits somehow}
So... coaching possiibilities:
My pick is Coach Pete
-head coaching experience at the Ju Co level, won a National Title at the Juco level.
-is reportedly loved by the players and I think we'd keep more if he stayed.
-I just think he checks the most boxes.
But who knows. He's an Iowa kid, played for Iowa State, and he could want to go there.
Coach Klink
-has been the good soldier for the program for a long time. Has been passed over twice, and stayed. He likes it here, he's been a Jackrabbit BB coach forever, and it may be his time.
If Pete doesn't get it, I will be ok with Coach Klink. he kinda deserves a chance.
Outside the Staff:
TJ"s Staff... on of the assistant's on TJ's Staff at Iowa State, was being talked about a lot by the Drake crowd. And, what was TJ before he came here, an Assistant at Iowa State. I think that guy is worth a look.
Creighton's staff: The two hires Sell has made have had Greg McDermott connections. Both TJ and Hendo worked under him. Does Creighton have an assistant coach, that is highly regarded.
Before you dismiss this thought... DeVries... who was Drakes Coach, who went to WV and now Indiana, was a McDermott assistant at Creighton, and One of the finalists that interview for the SDSU job when Otz got the job.
Joe Krabbenhoft - Assistant at Wisconsin, but a SD native, and worked on Hendo's staff.
I think these are all decent options, but maybe the go outside of the normal.
I'm confident Justin Sell will hire the right guy.
I mostly hope it's Coach Pete, so we can probably keep more players. But it's hard to say.
