It is my feeling (key word) that regular season champions are more deserving. I am not stating it as a fact, and acknowledge that it is a minority view. A tournament champion (i.e. a hot team) might perform better in the NCAA tournament.

In reality, all of this is subjective, and Summit has decided to send the tournament champion to the NCAA tournament. Some years, that will harm the Jackrabbits. Some years, the Jacks will take advantage of that.

I think all conference tournament winners are the automatic qualifiers. In order to be allowed to conduct a tournament I believe that is a requirement.

Personally I wouldn't want it any other way. Why would you take away the most exciting part of the season.

well this argument has been had at least THOUSANDS of times. there is not a correct answer. obviously what happens is tournament winners go to the ncaa. but there is NOT a right and wrong answer to this. sometimes the best team shows it all year

sometimes like OUR girls this year the best team takes until the end of the season to play their best for some reason, injuries being one of them

if you do not give the auto bid to tourney winner, it makes the regular season games MORE valuable and more exciting because everyone does not get a second chance at end of year

but then you also have teams with nothing to play for theoritically once they are out of the running for the championship

you can go on and on and people have for decades

ultimately the best case would be if BOTH the tourney winner and the regular season winner would get a spot in the ncaa but there are not enough spots for that and then you begin to argue about watering down the big tourney

I believe the Ivy league was the last regular season hold out. They added a tournament in 2017.

has anyone started to pay much attention to potential opponents?? i am very familiar with the jacks and the summit league but i dont pay a lot of attention any longer to the rest of ncaa teams. i am pretty disgusted with the direction of the nba and big college hoops so i largely tune them out any more

but the BIGGEST factor for ncaa success is the matchup. a team that is not huge would give us a better shot. i see texas mentioned a lot. who else are you hearing and what type of rosters do they have?

well i guess we do not have to find out if we would make it as an at large))

espn has had us playing alabama in the first round for a while now. i have a hard time believing that they would have us play a team we played already in the first round, but maybe they dont care about that.

i would think that alabama might not be too crazy about that. our game was much closer with them than the final 16 point margin. and next time it would be on a neutral floor. we would have a healthier doug and it is hard to imagine that baylor could shoot any worse than he did that game. on the other hand, they might think that they guy who scored 23 on them is no longer playing

I don't think it will be Alabama, either.

Texas is not a great matchup. They aren't too big, actually... but Chris Beard is a good coach, and they are currently ranked #22.

well if we play a 4 or 5 or 6 seed those would be teams theoretically in the top 15 to 25 teams in the country. so ranked 22 would be accurate. and to be honest i think we have a SOLID chance to beat anyone outside the top 10. OF COURSE i am not saying we would be favored but we would and will have a reasonable chance to win

after i posted about texas i tried to look at them a little and i agree they are not overly big, so actually i would be willing to take our chances

i agree beard is a good coach!! but i really do not think the guy we have on our bench is going to ever be significantly outcoached. i think he is pretty good)))) and by that i mean I FREAKING LOVE OUR COACH

Currently we are ranked 71 on KenPom and 64 in NET.
According to KenPom we are currently ranked higher than the conference tournament champion or current conference leader for the following 17 conferences:
                      SWAC
                      Southland
                      NEC
                      Horizon
                      MEAC
                      Sun Belt
                      ASUN
                      CAA
                      Big Sky
                      Big South
                      Big West
                      Patriot
                      Ivy
                      MAAC
                      WAC
                      MAC
                      Southern

We are ranked one spot ahead of Chattanooga according to KenPom and one spot below according to the NET rankings. Based on that we would be the 1st or 2nd ranked 13 seed depending on our placement in regards to Chattanooga.

Currently three teams ranked ahead of us that have secured a bid: Gonzaga, Loyola Chicago and Murray St.

The following conferences current leaders are ranked higher than us according to KenPom and would be seeded above us with winning the conference tournament:
American East - Vermont (63) - If Vermont loses we should be seeded ahead of the conference tournament champion.
Conference USA - North Texas (46), UAB (52) - If both North Texas and UAB lose, we would be ranked ahead of the conference champion.

Mid-major conferences with multiple teams ranked ahead of us - would take a big upset of none of these teams winning the tournament to move us up at all.
                      Atlantic 10 - Davidson (45), Dayton (47), St. Louis (60), VCU (61)
Mountain West - San Diego St. (23), Boise St. (27), Colorado St. (48), Wyoming (55), Fresno St. (66)
                      Big East - UConn (20), Providence (34), Seton Hall (35), Marquette (42), Xavier (57), St. Johns (62), Creighton (70)

It seems we would need a couple of conference upsets to move us to the 12 seed line. I don't see how we can get to the 11 seed. I really feel like the rankings algorithms are working against us more than almost any other team. Hoping the NCAA doesn't put as much weight into those ranking and look at recent records and winning streaks to bump us up ahead of Chattanooga and Vermont at least.

And I’m sure I’m in the minority when I say this but I think it’s ridiculous. The body of work that you put together for the year should be what gets you into the tournaments. If you’re one and done in the big dance then so be it.
The ACC was the first conference that selected their conference tournament champion as their representative to the NCAA Tournament. They did this back in the day when only one team from the ACC made the tournament. If you have a chance watch the documentary on the ACC Network that discuses the history of the ACC Tournament.

I see where you’re coming from concerning the regular season champ being awarded the bid the NCAA, but I would leave it as is. The excitement and TV exposure these championship games give these conferences are important. How about more at larges for the Mid-Majors. Keep a team like Michigan out this year. Let Iona in…..

Oklahoma and Virginia Tech get upset wins and earn their way to on the bubble status.

Would love it if NCAA selection committee would make a statement with some of the P5 schools that went 500ish in conference play. “Hey you had a decent net ranking, but you played 0 true non-conference road games…”

Richmond stole a bid from an at-large. Should also move the Jacks up another spot.

Not sure if it has been mentioned but I really enjoyed the article titled 8 thoughts on the MBB team written by the Kelo sports reporter. Very well done an accurate description of these young men. Seems like we have lost this type of journalism today. Hope I run into the reporter some day so I can thank him. Well worth the read.
