I don't have any proof, just speculating. I must have missed the discussion on the medical redshirt for him, but the rule states that:

"College athletes, including basketball players, have four school years of eligibility to play a varsity sport, which they may complete during a 5-year span. It’s not uncommon for an athlete to take what’s called a “redshirt” year as a freshman, in which the athlete practices with the team but doesn’t compete in any games. He can then compete during the next four years. Additionally, if an athlete competes in some games but misses a substantial part of the team’s season due to injury or illness, he can petition the NCAA for a hardship waiver -- commonly known as a “medical redshirt” -- meaning that his abbreviated season doesn’t count against his four years of eligibility."

"In cases where a player takes a standard, nonmedical redshirt season, then later is granted a medical redshirt, the player has six years in which to complete his four seasons of basketball eligibility."

It doesn't matter if he was hurt the first year, that was a standard red shirt year. If the confusion is on having a 2nd red shirt, it's technically not medical red shirt, but rather a medical hardship waiver.

The only thing I can see holding him back from applying for it and getting approved is the fact that technically it's supposed to be a season ending injury, which it seems is not the case, but I'll guarantee they will make it look that way if they want to gain another year of eligibility.

Sorry that I missed earlier discussion on this, but could someone fill me in on why he wouldn't be eligible?

To get a 6th year I believe you need to show that an injury cost you 2 years (eg Gabby Boever injured last year in HS and was recovering 1st yr of college when she redshirted). I don't believe Flatten has had this occur. Please correct me if I am wrong.

You are correct, I did some more research after posting, and you have to prove that you lost 2 years to injury to apply for a 6th year. However, I know Flatten was injured during his redshirt year.

The question is, was he injured enough during his 1st year and has he been injured enough this year to warrant a 6th year? I don't know either of those things, but my point is, I believe it's possible, so I'm not sure why people are saying it's not possible unless they know the specifics of his injuries.

It sounds like Flatten is going to return this year anyways, so a medical redshirt would be out of the question. I don't think he would dress at the games if he didn't plan on playing this year. A couple weeks ago I talked to one of the basketball managers, and he said that Skyler does not want a medical redshirt. He will be with the program for 6 years then. If he has a chance to play at all, I'm guessing he will take it.

Basically, Flatten would need to have the medical records to prove that he was redshirted due to injury his true freshman year (and not come back this year) in order to qualify for a medical hardship waiver and get his eligibility window extended to 6 years.

I have no clue whether he has these records or not, but that is what would be needed.

I think with our size advantage, we should beat them 8 out of 10 times.
He can shoot it, but with a windup the starts basically at his knees, he needs about 6 feet of clear space in front of him to get a shot off. The Jacks just lost him way too often.

I think this is what happened. He had too many wide open shots.

Nice win for the men! I really hope we can find away to get Telly engaged in these upcoming games. His shot isn't falling right now which doesn't concern me so much as he is a good shooter and that will come back. He just doesn't seem to be flying around the floor on either end with the same energy level as we were used to last year.

Really? From what I've seen, his defense and rebounding is why he's continuing to get minutes. I thought he's looked good on that end.

Reed was definitely flying around at the 1:20 mark.

I agree, he has been very good on defense and rebounding. Especially considering he's usually undersized, considering he has to play the 4 spot. Honestly, that could be one of the reasons why his offense has struggled, because he's having to expend so much energy defending the post at times.

Lighten up on Reed (not that anyone is overboard). He's working hard on D and it takes a lot of energy. Last year he played very little D and seemed to use that energy on O maybe a tad more. He's undersized at the 4. He's working hard. For the most part he's not forcing offensively and we are winning. He'll be there when he's needed. I believe Reed is becoming more of a complete player this year and it's a transition year. He'll figure it out.

Is Reed actually undersized for a 4 in the Summit League?

I'm not getting done on Reed but he is a better player than he has shown lately. Yes there is much more to a game than box scores show. I would like to see some offensive sets for him early in the game as it seems like he has been somewhat forgotten and it gets hard for him to get in the flow.
