    Re: This Year!

The men's team needs Parks to "stem the tide" until Marshall can play...then I think they could be pretty good.

Going to need to find someone to fill it up from deep... Carlson, Dykstra, White, were all pretty darn good shooters from distance.

Can Horstman/Bittle/Broman get it going from downtown? I'm thinking Jacobsen could get some looks, although kinda small, he's probably one of, if not the best, distance shooter on the team.

      Re: This Year!

The name of Flatten might be added to the players who might have a good outside shot. I am not certain of Tellinghuisen, but I thought he would be a perimeter player as well. Parks must have a shot with all the points he scored at the JUCO level. Scoring should not be the big problem. It would be great if we had 8 or 9 players who could play good enough defense for a longer rotation of players. Good defensive depth may tip the scales in the Summit as it seems most MBB plays a shorter bench in the Summit. we will get a glimpse on Thursday.

A guess at the starting lineup:
        Parks
        Flatten
        Bittle
        Theisen
        Larson
        This space for lease.

I would expect Horstman to get the nod early. I would guess Flatten first off the bench for 1-3 spots. I hope Bittle is ready to play this week or that makes for more guesses. The backup point guard for the first part of season is the head scratcher. It sounded quite certain Parks will start the season at that spot. The strength of our reserves could be a bigger asset this year if we can have 8-9 players playing good defense.

            Re: This Year!

I'm guessing Nagy will go with his experience early but I'd expect Theisen and Tellinghuisen to get in the rotation from the start. I'm curious to see how Broman has come along. One of the best pure shooters in Minnesota history and now struggles making shots. Confidence for sure because you don't lose that stroke! I've heard Theisen has dropped nearly 25 lbs since his arrival in brookings. Curious about Doyle as well. Wonder where he'll fit in, aggressive rebounders can always find a spot on the floor. Probably won't get much out of the exhibitions to draw conclusions but excited to watch this year's team get after it finally!

Terry said he'll have basketball season previews in the Argus Leader tomorrow, so I would guess he'll have the information on that.

Mike Daum would be my guess.

.@GoJacksMBB coach Scott Nagy said that true freshman Mike Daum will redshirt this season. Reed Tellinghuisen and Ian Theisen will play.

I hope that Theisen gets a lot of playing time. If we not going to redshirt him (and I understand that he may be good enough right now for the team), I just hope doesn't get left on the bench a lot. Not redshirting him probably won't be good news for Logan Doyle IMO.

                            Re: This Year!

didnt want start a new thread on it, but looking at the stats to start the year after a few games, we apparently are not a very good 3 point shooting team. If i recall and others correct me as needed, but Nagy said something to the effect that this was one of his best shooting teams? I am going to assume thats coach speak for telling the team to work on their shot since they stink and we actually arent as good shooting as I would like so hopefully it really improves. Sort of like how he said Prince was the most improved on the team a few years ago and he rarely played then, Nagy is really good every year at this sort of mind game thing that says one thing but probably means another. Maybe it has the potential to be a great shooting team, but I dont see it yet. All the upper classman are not a 3 pt threat, bittle is our best 3 pt shooter at 30%. Thats not going to cut it.

I don't know much about Horstman's career but it seems to have been injury prone. That being said, I thought I read he was a legit 3 point shooter at one point. Broman can shoot it no question but not from the bench. Tellinghusen seems to have a nice stroke too. The biggest issue i've seen with our lack of 3 point shooting is so many are late in the shot clock or contested to an extent. We seem to have spot up shooters available to us on the roster but not getting them into good spots to let it go. I believe our 3 pt shooting % will improve once the offense gets more flow.

Well George Marshall shot 36.8% from 3 his freshman year and that we good enough for 11th in the Big 10. He should add a new dimension to the team when he starts playing. 3 Point shooting is contagious, so when someone starts making them that eases the pressure off the others.
