    Re: Cody Larson to SDSU

Cody needs a waiver to have the ability to play right away in 2013-14 season. That process can't begin until he's fully enrolled at SDSU. If granted the waiver he would then have 2 years of eligiblity within the 5 year calendar. An additional waiver would be needed to give him back a 3rd year which would be beyond the 5 year. You get 5 years to play 4 seasons at Division I level. 2013-14 begins his 4th year of the 5 year calendar. If he's not granted a waiver he has to sit out next season and would be eligible to play 2014-15 season which is year 5 and would need a waiver for additional years. He's only played one full season but the calendar starts the minute you start competing at the DI level and runs concurrent even if you leave school. It's different than the DII 10 semester rule which can be split up over multiple years .. start/stop when an athlete leaves school or unenrolls.

Is it possible to get a waiver to play next year and get a 6th year or is that too far of a chance to actually happen?

Yep it's possible....anythings possible but getting the chance to play right away is ideal. The fact that he's transferring to a lower level DI school than the High Major level plays into his favor as well as sitting out last season. As does loss of scholarship. It's entirely up to the NCAA and there is no rhyme or reason at times for their decisions regarding transfer situations. Transfer waivers are of concern in the coaching ranks lately, not sure if that will affect his request or not. Time will tell.

Does anybody know the NCAA precedent/trend for granting a waiver for someone like Cody Larson?

It would seem that a waiver would be more likely if the need were due to medical reasons than due to personal reasons.

Thanks for the update, Cadsev. Any insight into how successful either waiver request might be?Or, maybe more importantly, your opinion on how effective Cody can be in te summit league at this point in his basketball career?

Cadsev, So if I understand correctly, Cody could play anywhere from 1 to 3 years for the Jacks?

Whichever year he plays, we will have a need. Heemstra and Dykstra will both be gone after this year, so he would certainly fill a void down the road. Guys of his size/athleticism don't come along at our level very often. In my mind this is absolutely worth the risk. Big addition.

This is my interpretation of what Cadsev has said. SDSU has one year of Larson on the court pretty much in the pocket--2014-15. There are two potential waivers involved---the transfer waiver, which would let Larson play immediately in 2013-14, and the 4-in-5 rule waiver, which would give him 2015-16 and allow him 4 years of intercollegiate competition.

                    Re: Cody Larson to SDSU

My guess is they are applying for a waiver to play right away. Transferring closer to home and from a larger school to a smaller school gives it a decent chance. His history might hurt that, also him losing his scholarship and being on scholarship here could hurt that as well. Tea leaf reading the NCAA though, so who knows. If I'm not mistaken you can't apply for the 6th year until after the 5th year is up, or during the 5th year. Meaning that can't occur until during/after next year. And to get that would be VERY HARD, generally injury history is required for this, but with the NCAA you never know.

I'm mixed on this, I see athletic ability and size that isn't seen much in the Summit League, but I also see a guy who hasn't got on the court for numerous different reasons for quite a few years in a row, playing little his senior year of hs, red-shirting, playing little, sitting out, and now could have to sit out another year. Playing D-I ball and playing in the gym is totally different, so I'm not going to expect much on the court from the guy, but I do agree its worth the risk.

Know what I want to see? A year of Dykstra and Larson on the floor together and seeing other teams scramble to guard them.

Really Joe, you arent going to expect much from him on the court? So you think Nagy is wasting his time?

Trevor Mbakwe was given a 6th season to complete his eligibility after getting injured in his 5th year.He sat out one of those entire years at Minnesota while he was dealing with legal problems.

I could care less now many minutes he played during high school basketball, AAU is where it's at. Also I think being in the Florida program for two years helped more than hurt not matter how much he played. Sure not playing last year is not ideal but it might mean it will take him a little while to come back to form.

Totally agree. Even if Cody started on the bench at the beginning of the year it'd be great. Heemstra and Devine would add huge (dare I say it?) depth! It'd be really cool to move Dykstra to a 3 guard with those other guys and let him play his true position that he was recruited to Iowa State for.
