  • NCAA Tourney Press

Last year we had a thread where we posted links to all the press the Jacks got in association with their trip to the NCAA's. The national exposure that comes with being in this event is priceless. Post links here if you find them.

    Yahoo Sports:
    http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaab-...00--ncaab.html

"The Jackrabbits may spring an upset this year or lose by 20. But whatever they do, the NCAA tournament will be more intriguing simply because they're part of it."

"The one-and-done rule has led to stars predictably leaving the major college programs after their freshman years, allowing the mid-majors to battle talent with experience. For every highly touted freshman such as UCLA’s Shabazz Muhammad there’s a Nate Wolters, the senior guard who led South Dakota State to its second straight Horizon League title and a spot in the tourney."

We can't fire up that conversation, because Commissioner Douple asked us not too.

"South Dakota State Confesses They Were Excited About Tournament When They Heard Seeds Were Involved"
Disappointed the Onion couldn't muster an entire article from the headline. C'mon, Man!

                    Here, I'll help:
It's finally sinking in, like seed corn into the rich Dakota prairie.

When South Dakota State University's men's and women's basketball teams won collectively their sixth and seventh bids to the NCAA Division I basketball tournaments last week (in only five years of NCAA Division I eligibility)--five in a row for the women's basketball team and two straight for the men--the agriculture-dominated university and its alumni and boosters were ecstatic when word finally reached the remote prairies and hills of the state that the National Collegiate Athletic Association would award highly valued seeds to the largest university in the state. Rampant speculation on authoritative fan message boards such as SDSUFans.com discussed the exact nature of these widely desired and fought-for seeds offered by the national organization.

"I can't wait to harvest my heirloom NCAA tomatoes" exclaimed JackJD, a frequent poster on SDSUFans.com.

"Yeah, but tomatoes are red, so obviously USD is superior," replied poster CoyoteFan.

"I wonder if you could make beer out of the seeds," mused poster TransAmBison.

But in a press release today, the NCAA clarified for the South Dakota rustics the meaning and context of the word "seed."

"We understand and fully sympathize with the confusion of the South Dakota State community" read the press release, "but the NCAA does not provide plant seeds, in an agricultural sense. The term 'seed' when applied to athletic tournaments refers to the relative position of each participant in the tournament with all of the other participants, as adjudged by the infallible Selection Committees which the NCAA, in its divine wisdom, appoints in the name of the Lord of Basketball, James Naismith, peace be upon him."

The NCAA will spill its seeds on the ground, so to speak, on Sunday (for the men) and Monday (for the women). Quoting further from the NCAA's press release, "Interested parties will know that the committees have made their seed decisions when the white smoke emanates from the chimney of the NCAA's headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana."

Retired South Dakota State University plant science professor Brent Turnipseed, manager of the SDSU seed testing lab, when asked to comment, said, on behalf of all people associated in any way with the university: "Oh."
Apologies to Professor Turnipseed, who is an actual real live person. (Truth is stranger than fiction.)

I've been kinda on a roll today. Snookums left to go volunteer for the Big 12 tournament here in town, and foolishly left me unsupervised.
