Re: Oakland
I thought it was odd in the post game that Kampe thought Tony couldn't hit 15 foot jumpers, he seemed stunned that he was hitting wide open jump shots. It sounded like they built their defensive strategy around that. From where I sit, he has been a good mid-range jump shooter, especially for a post. Just seemed odd to me.“I used to be with it. But then they changed what it was. Now what I’m with isn’t it, and what’s it seems scary and wierd. It’ll happen to you.” — Abe Simpson

Re: Oakland
It may have been a surprise that the SDSU coaches did something that Kampe did not anticipate especially since there was more attention paid to Tony second half. #21 was smaller and quicker than Petros and he was trying to stick with Tony and lean on him tighter. He was not strong enough to handle Tony. Also, it should not be a surprise that Tony is shooting more this year. The Oakland staff must have overlooked Nate's assist numbers. There is a strong chance Nate will have his name at the top of that category this season as well.Originally posted by SF_Rabbit_Fan View PostI thought it was odd in the post game that Kampe thought Tony couldn't hit 15 foot jumpers, he seemed stunned that he was hitting wide open jump shots. I'd bet that Tony has probably made around 70% of the 15-18 foot jumpers he's taken in his college career due to both his ability and shot selection. If you think nobody cares about you, try missing a couple of payments.

Re: Oakland
Oakland's strategy was to double Wolters on the high screen and take away the normal way that Nate gets loose and scores. The fully expected to have Fiegen get the ball where he did and took their chances on him shotting vs. Wolters. Tony made them pay. He played with some real intensity last night. Also, it shows how much of a team player Nate is. So many scorers (Bader for one) are going to throw up their shots no matter what. Nate took what the defense gave them and made his team better tonight by dishing the ball. Oakland changed their philosophy for the second after Fiegen put up 20+ in the first half. Nate responded by starting to score. Very mature ball out of both players.
I WILL TAKE A WIN OVER OAKLAND ANY TIME!!! They may be a little down now but come tournament time I expect them to be one of the teams to beat. Kampe is a great coach and has his guys ready to play. They have serious athletic ability and are tall. If we have to play them in SF I hope its in the finals.
Overall, a step forward for the team tonight. Need to continue that momentum!

Re: Oakland
Well, heck...I thought we played quite well last night. Not enough contributors in the first half, obviously, and we gave up too many second-chance points. But, for the most part, I thought we played a very consistent game. Nate learned early that his defender was very good and adjusted his ball-handling. White hit a huge three late. Huge. What can you say about the way Tony played in the first half? It was man-sized effort. He was able to get past and open against a much bigger defender. And he knocked down just about every open shot (or every shot) he took. Dykstra joined the party in the second half.
Love Kampe as a coach. Sat above him last night and just love the guy. They are likely going to shoot better at home, so we'll likely need another good defensive effort. And better rebounding. The O'Rena is a tough joint in which to get a win. Nate will likely play better for us. He took it easy on a fast-break layup last night...just to casual/slow, and he got it swatted. Gotta clean that up. Maybe it's because I was comparing it to what I saw in the first half of the USD game (still disgraceful), but I thought we looked solid last night against a good team.Grumbling along and embracing my role. If I didn't care, I wouldn't care. Go Jacks!
