Word. We'll get ripped for lack of athleticism for eternity. But it's a new world order in the NCAA. In today's college basketball world, on-court leadership, experience, and coaching trump athletic ability.

My second-favorite cinderella is this year? Long Beach State. Four senior starters and Monson had them play the toughest out-of-conference schedule in the country. Pitt, San Diego State, Louisville, Kansas, North Carolina, Xavier, Auburn, Kansas State. They'll play anyone, anywhere. And it will pay dividends in the tournament.

Exactly, you don't have to be the same size, bigger, faster, or more "athletic" to play better basketball. You just have to know how to play and execute. Sometimes the more athletic basketball team wins but most of the time the better basketball team wins. Baylor is clearly more athletic and they may be better as well, can't tell that until you play the game. I'd argue that most of the teams SDSU played this year were more athletic than the Jackrabbits, its obvious which team won the most games.

I was at the game in Lubbock when the Jacks had the better team and outplayed Baylor but still lost. Several factors contributed to that, some of them within SDSU's control, many of them not. In the end, Baylor had more points and SDSU went home. I think that Jackrabbit team would have won at least 1 more game that year, if not 2. It was a travesty and will forever leave a sour taste in my mouth. Mulkey's behavior was juvenile and unprofessional and that isn't a judgement on my part, that is a fact.

When a USD fan I worked with who doesnt follow womens basketball watched after I finally bugged him about it, we disagree on almost everything sports related, but he was bothered that a Baylor player faked an injury so she wouldnt have to shoot free throws, yet seeing her on the side lines cheering she sure didnt look injured to badly.

Anyway, back to the topic on hand. If Baylor comes out like its the final four they are playing for, they will probably win. IF they come out thinking we are a push over, they will be going home early. I just hope we get off to one of our quick starts.

It hurts to lose games like that, it made Baylor fans think of SDSU fans as sore losers, but stuff happens and just gets magnified in big games. But, Baylor fans have no sympathy, we have had a worse ending than that in the NCAA tournament. 2004 Sweet 16 game, (Baylor was an up and coming team that didn't have the national respect that they do now), playing juggernaut Tennessee. Game was tied with seconds left, Baylor had the ball. Missed shot, Baylor player gets to the loose ball and tips it to another Baylor player, then a split second later a Tennessee player crashes into her (also going for the loose ball). The refs call a loose ball foul on Baylor with 0.3 seconds left. Tennessee goes to their end with the clock stopped and makes 2 free throws, game over. Baylor used that as motivation going into the next year (had shirts printed up that said 0.3) and ended up winning the national title in 2005. On occasion, you will still hear ESPN talking heads reference that game from 8 years ago.

Thank you for your perspective. Doesn't change any of the facts as they pertain to the game I referenced. Having a sour taste in my mouth doesn't equate to being a sore loser. Calling out Mulkey for acting unprofessional doesn't equate to being a sore loser. Baylor won the game regardless of how it happened.

Odds were against the Jackrabbits then and they are now. I know the Jackrabbits are looking forward to the challenge.

It was the personal attacks from you on Kim Mulkey that rubbed the Baylor fans the wrong. As far as the WBB game from a few years ago, your girls played a commendable game.

As I stated before on your forum, you guys drew first blood. Posting and ridiculing pictures of Macie Michelson, a former SDSU player, and not in a cutesy manner either. At least I poked fun at a professional(at least paid to be one, you won't find any of us sharing that sentiment) who is paid to deal with the outside criticisms and jokes vs a scholarship athlete which evidently is not a problem for your fanbase, which makes no sense. So don't give me that crap. People poked me, I poked back.
I also agree with all of jackmd's statements, we aren't sore about the losing. The Baylor athletes did a great job in that game. We have a sour taste about your whiny coach. We don't dwell on it though. It just happens it is the only thread that would actually tie our two schools together in any way, shape, or form. It's a fun/painful reminder, otherwise, we have absolutley nothing in history or common except for we play this Thursday.

Seems like a waste of effort to dwell on it, but I guess I admit it never bothers me when I see Jacksonville State on the losing end of a basketball score.

I agree. Dwelling on a game that happened years ago doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Epecially considering 1) It was women's basketball and this is a men's match-up and 2) The only people that are still on the teams that played any pivitol role are the coaches. Lingering in the past does nothing but ruin the present.

Or when Schantz went for a lay second shot that was totally fouled on against metro at Frost and the crowd went crazy seeing he was fouled and the FTs would win it.....but before we knew what hit us the Refs were long gone off the court, Schantz was sitting on the ground after a hard foul and Metro was celebrating on our home court.. Atleast thats how I remember it.

I don't remember him being fouled. I remember he had a good look at the hoop from the free throw line and just missed it and I was in the front row. It's possible I don't remember it correctly. What I do remember for sure from that game is the Aussie kid that went off.

Pretty sure he was fouled. Atleast thats the way I want to see it. I though he got undercut or shoved a bit. I was front row student section so at least thats how we saw it. Yeah, kid decides to go for a career night against us and that was one heck of a game.

I was present for most of the above mentioned events and listening in that night 29 years ago. I have a similar but not as sour taste in my mouth for each. I referenced the aforementioned game because it has some relevance at this time, not much but some. If you don't like me referencing it don't comment on it. I'm not the type of person that can just "let is slide". I actually think that has served me well in life.

Now, as I discuss the game with more and more very biased people I think the Jackrabbits may be able to dictate the pace and therefore outcome of this game. The keys include shooting the 3 to our potential (40% or greater), rebounding on the defensive end, getting back on defense and a poor shooting performance by Baylor. Nate doesn't have to have a monster game but all our other guys need to perform to their ability or better. I think the Jacks can do it.

Quincy Acy started to call us San Diego in a presser when asked what he thought about being in the same region as Duke. He stopped himself and corrected himself and said something along the lines of "who is it? South Dakota...yeah the Jackrabbits."

They aren't even sure who they are playing....can't help but think they are looking past us. What that means remains to be seen.
