Re: USD
I'm about to go on a bit of a rant, not specifically directed at you TK.
I hate Duke. But, they haven't exactly died by the 3. Maybe a game here or there, but overall the 3 point shot has been very, very, very kind to them. They aren't as athletic as most of the "top" programs in the country, but they have smart players who play together. And they shoot a lot of 3's
I've never bought the "live by the 3, die by the 3." I think that is something analysts say to sound smart that is cliche and not true, as most of the top programs in the country have deadly shooters and shoot a lot of 3's. I also think it is something fans say to make themselves feel better about losses, or humble themselves in victory. A post game can go into a slump just as easily as a perimeter game.
We don't have, and will likely never have a dominating big man like Keith Benson. That is a fact of life as a mid-major in the middle of nowhere. Tony Fiegen is probably as good as it gets. That isn't a knock on Tony. He has more than held his own against the bigs from Oakland, IPFW, and NDSU this year. When Oakland had that fantastic big man for his senior year, they still averaged 22 attempts per game. That's top 24 in the country for shooting the 3.
If we would have attempted the 3 in the first half like we did in the second, we would have won the game going away. In fact, when we actually started shooting the 3 more is when we gained ground on USD.
Play our game. That's how we win. Get up and down the court, shoot a lot of 3's, defend, and rebound.
