My understanding was that he was not here Saturday, but will be Monday night for the womens game.

About the only coach who used this style of play that I recall was Carrol Heir and his Huron Tigers of 1958. Two of his players went on to be on the 1963 Championship team, Nick Brod and Denny Busch, late uncle of Mike Busch. The Huron team that year even stopped a good Jim Marking Watertown team three times that year. With the shot clock, you could not play that type of game today.
Also in the 1963 championship game Wittenberg used a slow type game, and I often wonder if the fact that Busch and Brod had played that style was a contributing factor to our win. More name dropping, Wittenberg was coached by 23 year old Eldon Miller, who went on to coach at Ohio State and UNI to name two of his stops. The prior season Miller had been on the roster at Wittenberg.

I meant to respond to this sooner, but have been too busy at work. The stall game that I remember was the Region 3 championship game in Watertown. Not sure what year, maybe 72 or 73. Sioux Valley and Hamlin played. Sioux Valley had won both games they played during the regular season. Hamlin played the stall game. Hamlin led 4-2 at the end of the 1st quarter and 6-4 at halftime. There was more action in the 2nd half. Sioux Valley finally tied the game at 23 in the 4th quarter and got the ball back with about 2 & 1/2 minutes left in the game. They then held the ball and called time out with 3 seconds left. On the inbounds play Henry Lengkeek caught the ball, turned and swished a jumper from the left corner at the buzzer. I think Steve Brown scored all but 2 of Hamlin's points There was a Tetzlaff who played a significant role for them also that year. Henry Lengkeek, Lee Vanderaa, and Russell Kleinjan (Andy's dad) were the major players for Sioux Valley. I remember that this was a very tense game to watch because every possession was huge. A friend of mine went out into the lobby before the game ended because she couldn't handle the tension anymore. This is accurate as far as I remember, but I will welcome any corrections by those with a better memory.

Addition - Sioux Valley was coached by George Kiner. Hamlin by Mr. Baysinger.

Late in this thread, but as far as great dunks to see, my most memorable (if not the most awesome) was in a game at Frost, when a Jacks player was shooting a one-and-one FT. Matt Jones, a sophomore at the time, was lined up in the middle spot on the left side of the lane. The FT was missed, and Matt went around the opposing player, grabbed the rebound out of his hands, put it once on the floor, and went straight up on a standing jump to dunk the ball. It was one of the more athletic plays I've ever seen as a Jack fan.

Was that against UNO? Don't know why but I seem to remember him having a bunch of big dunks against them one game.

I believe it may have been, although I'm not sure...just know that whenever I think about it, I get a little down remembering how much I wished that Matt could have finished his career instead of going through all the health problems he had.

Living in the south central part of the state, I was fortunate to see Matt Jones play several times during his high school days at Wessington Springs. He was the most effortless (in a positive way) dunker I have seen in person. Most high school kids have to have a clear lane to the basket to throw it down. Matt could grab a rebound underneath the basket and go up and 2 hand it like most would go up to lay it off the glass.

He was one of the top 2 players to come out of south central SD in recent years - the other being Zach Horstmann. (Both would have looked much better in red)
