Take it how you want to, I won't accept a loss to SWMS at Frost by 40 points anytime.  Never acceptable.  The move to DI, the loss of Moeller, Matt being ill, none of these are acceptable excuses and anyone using them should be ashamed.  There is no excuse for last nights debacle, plain and simple.

Let's see if I can make my point a little better this time around:


How many games do you think our women's team would have won this year without Seiler and Schlagel on the team and with Meckley and Verdegan Red Shirted? That is what the men are dealing with!

You can play that same senario on any team you wish. It has nothing to do with quality of the players that are left! The men's team is shorthanded this year!

In my opinion anyone attacking the quality of our players ought to be ashamed. True fans stick by their players and coaches through thick and thin! Things are a little thin right now on the men's side!

I agree with JBNJBQ. Yeah they had a really bad game, did not any of you before?

Give them a break, support them fully. They need the fans to be on their side. Not looking to bash them and their efforts.

Things will improve. Leadership from JUCO is not always a given. One of the players still has six games to decide to step up and assume that role, but taking it from one who is suppose to be giving it now is not easy or painles.

I don't disagree with you JBNJBQ, but by the sounds of things, last nights results had little to do with ability and more to do with effort. WE LOST BY 40 TO SW STATE AT FROST!! If everyones giving 100%-Great. Is everyone giving 100% right now on this team?

I have to agree with filbert on this, If I understand correctly, everyones scholarship is for one year, renewable the following year. I would like to view the next six games as a prolonged "tryout" for next years team. I held back on posting until I calmed down a bit after last nights game. Its apparent that several of these guys dont care about playing basketball for South Dakota State. I'm sure coach Nagy can find some who do between now and next season.

I'm as pissed as the next guy about this year's team. However, the scholarship tryout would work only to further defeat the players we currently have on the roster and more importantly discourage any players from signing to play for SDSU in the future. If it got out that your scholarship at SDSU was only good if the team played well, we wouldn't get anyone better than Miller High School's 6th man to play for the Jacks.

Also, I think everyone's selling these athletes a little short. These guys have dedicated a large amount of their young live's time and energy to getting to the collegiate level of basketball. Although there are exceptions to every rule (and I'm sure a couple on the Jack's roster and everybody's roster in the NCAAs) the majority of the men who put on the blue and yellow each day for the Jacks have not given up. They are simply a beaten and battered group.

Confidence has more to do with athletics than will probably ever be known. Any of us who still play the occasional pickup game know that the shots seem to fall more frequently if you start the game out with a couple of makes as opposed to misses. Additionally, your intensity makes a decided upswing which correlates to an overall better play. Well, right now the Jacks are on a streak where even the bunnies are not going in. Hell, in keeping with the pickup game analogy, they are the player that can barely dribble the ball without having it bounce off his foot right now.

Give them a chance to rebound. It may not be this year, but give them a chance.

There are many, many very good Division I Mens Basketball Teams that pick up one or two Juco players every year. We need to be one of those teams staring now. If we want to play Division i then we need to recruit Division i players. We have a few but we need more as soon as possible

Those who few my posts as "attacks" against the current players are taking things way out of context.  If you think our players talent level is that of a 40 point loss at home to SWMS then stop talking about turning things around or waiting for next year.  How can you have any credibility if you want to base increased success on players who have never played college BB?

Criticism is not an "attack".  It is a necessary part as someone matures in their vocation.  If I decide not to show up mentally one day and make a fool of myself I expect someone to call me out.  Then, I listen, learn, and try not to do the same thing again.  These young men certainly must have the mental capacity and strength to withstand the proper poor evaluation of a very disheartened performance.  If they can't, then I'm not sure their the right players for SDSU and Coach Nagy.

I won't be ashamed for evaluating and voicing my opinion of the players.  There is simply nothing to be ashamed of.  In fact, I'll say it again, if your willing to accept performances like Sundays as indicative of the true talent level of our current players then you better admit that next year will be no better.  Don't be so soft about this, this team needs an attitude adjustment and that needs to start with an on the court leader.  Nagy can't step out and play defense, pass or score.

The problem as I see it with the 2 games that I witnessed is not so much as the team quitting, but the fact that this year's team lacks someone on the court to lead them (although I'd agree that a 38 point loss to SWMS can only be attributed to the players quitting at some level). I know this is not a novel idea as it has been posted numerous times on this message board after each loss. However, I don't think that's necessarily the players fault...or the coaches for that matter.

Leaders are not made, they are born. I believe in that credo 100%. You can't ask a player to change into a leader unless he has it in his makeup to lead. I'm not sure that person is on this team. The Brian Norbergs and the Jason Sempstrotts were more valuable for their leadership abilities than any amount of scoring. They were born leaders from the moment they laced them up as a 3rd grader.

Why this team quits is because there doesn't seem to be that one player on our team out there saying "if you quit you have to answer to me". If that guy was on our team he most certainly would have stepped up by now. Does a juco player come in and take over that role? I have my doubts.

Does that mean you can lable this team as a bunch of quitters? I guess. I see it more as the team seeking leadership from someone, anyone on the team and no one stepping up. Much like our guard play, we just don't have that as part of our arsonel this year.

I sure hope reinforcements are on the way and that we can rebuild quickly like we did several times while we were d2. I think it is more reasonable to assume that we are going to have to have 2 or 3 good recruiting classes in a row before we are going to be a good team. I just can't think of many teams who went from bad to good in one recruiting season. I don't know much about our redshirts but I hope they can help next year. I always approach redshirts with a lot of skepticism because if they were that good I suspect coach nagy would have played them this year. He definitely could have used the talent. His decision not to play them tells me that maybe they aren't ready to contribute right away. I am optimistic for our future success after a couple of good recruiting classes. But I am prepared for another tough season next year.

I have to respectfully disagree with your assessment based on comments that Coach Nagy made in Mitchell that were reported in a Sports Illustrated story.

"The future's more important than what's going on right now," he said. "We kind of knew that we'd take it on the chin this year. We made the decision to redshirt the freshmen, but unfortunately we don't have a great basketball team this year."  .  .  .

To be fair here, I suspect that we are going to get a few players that are ready to play immediately for next season, plus the red-shirts are coming off of three players, so next years team is really probably going to get an influx of two recruiting classes. With the current scholarship level we're talking about adding around 6-7 players if plus the two centers that will redshirt. If you look at the roster and who's coming back thats on scholarship all we have are (not including redshirts):

Beran
Green
Loney
Holdren
Kleinjan

To that we will add:

Gilbert
Cadwell

That are redshirted scholarship players

Thats 7 players on scholarship coming in for next year, plus the two that are signed is going to be 9, so we have 4 full scholarships left to give out. Thats almost an entire starting line of new players coming in that we don't know about. Things can change pretty fast with those kind of numbers. I would assume that at least two of those scholies are going to go to some much needed guards, and then maybe another foward or a center that are JUCO's.

Agreed. Nagy apparently told the Brookings Jackrabbit Club that his second team (including the freshmen) regularly beats the hell out of his first team in practice. Those guys are good.

I passed on getting season tickets this year for the first time and it initially looks like I made the right choice for this year.

I was planning on getting them next year, but after last night's debacle I'm not so sure.  It sure was a lowpoint in mens basketball history.  Nagy and the boys probably wish the season would end yesterday.

Things will get better, we just need to be patient.  There may not be huge improvements next year, but it will get better...............Trust in the almighty jackrabbit

This kind of attitude pisses me off more than anything else. Let's not come out and support the team until they start winning 20 games. I for one am embarrased about last nights game but it won't stop me from buying season tickets and attending games at Frost.

A quick question for you Jack fans. I was at the game last night, sitting behind the bench and above the student section.

The one thing I question is that alot has been said about the players not playing hard, etc. But what I noticed (and I know it's hard when things are going bad) but I noticed Nagy barely coached the last 30 minutes of the game. Never stood up, etc.

Did he quit as well?

Not trying to stir anything, just a question.

It has been said that the true test of a coach is how he holds a team together when times are hard and things are going bad. We have not had many "bad times" the past few years. It is my hope that Coach Nagy and the team step up and start something these last few games that we can build on for next season.
