Re: USD at SDSU in 2011?

I don't care if we play you in football or not. I have a wide range of emotions and thoughts about the game, so good, and some not so good.

What I sincerely don't understand is how so many SDSU fans disregard the economic side of the argument? In times where dollars are tight, one would think any school would grab at a game where alot of dollars would be generated and there is a high level of regional interest. You just plain can't argue the economics of the game, it totally makes sense.

I understand the contempt many of you have for USD. That goes with rivalries. I have been "converted" to being a JackRabbit fan on when they don't play USD because of the interactions I have had the last several months with many posters (and fans) on here. So I don't have the contempt for your University that many of you seem to do for mine. One of the major arguments in not playing the game or renewing the rivalry is the conduct of the fans at the games. This will be debated forever, because quite frankly it is fans on BOTH sides that make it turn out so ugly. The posters on here want a clean and healthy rivalry if it is to resume, and I also am in that corner. Both schools will need to take large steps to stop what has been behavior unbecoming of South Dakota people in any other enviroment. I share in that as well.

I think there is another permeating feeling on this board that USD needs this game more than you. Months ago, I argued that fact. But after analizing this point for some time, I might have to retract my rebuttal from months ago. Maybe there is something about that argument that is true. I personally don't believe it, but I would admit there are some vocal fans that want to be put on the same level as SDSUimmediately. So I understand your rational for not wanting to play.

Ever since I have posted on here, let me sum up what my feelings are to this whole debacle. First, I give you credit for making the move to D-I first, and if that is something you want to hold above the heads of USD fans in general, by all means do it. But by doing it, it also makes you more suspectable in the event USD beats you in what would be considered a major sport. After interacting with many of you on here, I do understand your feelings that USD doesn't respect the move you made 5 years ago. So given all that, doesn't it make sense at some point in time, that someone has to be the bigger person again, and make the move that renews the rivalry (if it is going to happen)?

If and when we do play, I will be the first to high five the Jacks fans as depart the stadium/Dome whether we win or lose. Tailgating prior to the game with shared tailgates would be a blast. The game makes sense, subject to many of us getting over old feelings.

Re: USD at SDSU in 2011?

          here is the economic argument....

We averaged around 12,000 fans..... if we would of switched the NDSU game and the SIU game we would of averaged more.... If we play USD the only way it makes sense is if its the last home game of the season....

The argument is though that you aren't going to have too many more paid fans and you are playing a rivalry game and its a lose lose situation.... you win and its a o yeah, but if you lose or if its any close people are like USD is way ahead....

I'm not against them playing but this they have to play because its economically viable is kinda bs....

yoteforever, that might be the most sensible, thoughtful and well-reasoned post I've seen on this site from a rival institution. Heck, you keep doing that I might start liking USD ... well, maybe not ... but it goes a long ways in making me think a game fairly soon would be a good idea.

From what I remember, we asked USD to come with us when we entered DI. They decided to sit back and stay in the friendly confines of the DII ranks. Then...SDSU started having success and USD has a sudden change of heart. I don't think we should be giving USD the kind of venue this game will bring. At least not this early. What have they done to deserve it?

Maybe it could be one of those Mt. Rushmore banks they sell in Keystone. You know, the ones with the presidents naked on the backside. On the bottom it reads,"near as I can tell we are somewhere behind Mt. Rushmore." That would be cool!

I believe SDSU won the 1st NCC football championship in 1922. Perhaps, if one was given for that championship, a replica of that trophy would make a good traveling trophy for the South Dakota State/U game.

Hopefully it wouldn't travel far, ever.

Were they just sitting back, or were they telling everyone how we couldn't be successful and keep recruiting South Dakota kids, and hence came up with their advertising campaign "South Dakota's Team"?
Maybe being naive on this one, but in terms of fan behavior, some USD fans still want the ugliness with the "Jack be nimble, Jack be quick, Jack can suck a Coyote d--k" shirts. Maybe SDSU fans have done the same in the past few years, but can't recall seeing or hearing of any. (I have seen some with NDSU references, but not USD)
In terms of economics obviously it would be great for SDSU if we get a two for none to start, but as someone said we really need the home game in opposite years of NDSU.
As far as USD in the Valley- why? Don't see any benefit in FCS to having two divisions (would still be short of the number for that), and it is nice to have some games ooc, imo. Gives the conference a chance to prove how good it is against other competition.
There are some traveling trophies amongst in-state schools-- Illinois and Northwestern just recently started playing for the "Land of Lincoln" trophy- a bronze trophy replicating Abe's trademark hat. Duke and Carolina do an all sports trophy called the "Carlyle Cup."

I'd say winning the last two FCS games would qualify as to "start winning some games".

Seems like 2011 would be the date. I'm guessing it would be a two for none in Brookings to start with negotiations after that, once USD leaves transition.

My only concern is fan behavior. It's going to take some real education efforts to try to cut down on the ugliness, but it's do-able.

Interesting. I'm guessing these negotiations are going on now. And I repeat: I'm guessing here. I have no inside information. Just putting two and two together. I could be entirely wrong about it.

Personally, I would enjoy adding another rivalry game. And while rivalry games are tough, certainly starting something that reduces the travel for both teams in the long run is a good thing. We can't afford to pay Wagner or CCSU or Austin Peay to come here (like some programs do). So this is a good way to get a solid, winnable home game that will draw a good number of fans to CAS.
Jimmy, for supposedly not having any inside information you definitely know your stuff! The rivalry is indeed resuming... don't know how excited it makes me though. Part of me wants the game to be played to kick the crap out of them. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind keeping them irrelevant.

Re: USD at SDSU in 2011?

As far is a traveling trophy is concerned for the SDSU/USD football game, I don't really think it is necessary and feel it could cheapen the Dakota Marker in some regard... but if we do want to have a traveling trophy with USD, why limit it to just football. Here's what I'm thinking:

South Dakota is the Mount Rushmore State, so I think it would be appropriate to have the trophy be a sized down replica of Mount Rushmore... but this replica is actually multiple rivalry trophies in one!

Let say the football trophy is George Washington's head, The men's basketball trophy is Jefferson's head, the women's basketball trophy is Roosevelt's head, and lets say... volleyball is Lincoln's head. Also, each university can have a base that is made of stone that looks like the rest of Mount Rushmore in which the heads of the presidents fit perfectly in. Then people could walk by the trophy room and see how well one school has done against the other due to how many heads they have on their mountain!... and as a bonus, if either school holds all 4 heads at once, they get to carry the title of "South Dakota's Team" until they no longer have all 4 in their possession.

How sweet would it be to see our sports teams carry off a granite, basketball sized, presidents head after winning one of the marquee sporting events against our in-state rival!
If you think nobody cares about you, try missing a couple of payments.
