I gotta believe the coaches are as good as gone at the end of the season, if not sooner, barring some unimaginable turnaround.

There's another news conference at 5:15 this afternoon to announce interim AD plans. The Omaha World Herald is reporting that the announcement will include the return of Tom Osborne to the department in some role. If he's not named interim AD, my guess it will be to some Sr. advisory role, or to lead the search for a new AD, followed by the search for a new football coach.

If nothing else, I would guess that Osborne's presence would give Riley Reiff and the other recruits some sense of stability in the program and maybe enough comfort to stay committed.

      Re: 2008 Recruits

I'm a Bison fan, and I apologize if this has already been posted. Minnesotapreps.rivals.com reported this weekend that quarterback Thomas O'Brien of Winona, MN has committed to the Jacks.

"As we noted two weeks ago. Winona Cotter senior quarterback Thomas O'Brien (6-foot-2, 185 pounds) is the most prolific passer in the state of Minnesota this season. O'Brien is averaging 30 passing attempts per game. He is completing 61% of his throws, and has a TD/Int ratio of 19 to 5." More details on their pay site.

This is the link with the details about his commitment to SDSU. Unfortunately, it requires a premium subscription. Apparently SDSU was the first team to make an offer to O'Brien. He really likes the coaching staff and he was attracted by the move to the Gateway and the chance to play the Gophers in 2009.

Looks like he could be a pretty solid recruit, hopefully he ends up a Jackrabbit.

2 interesting things about this article...

                1. They referred to us as being a I-A program.
                2. Does anyone else remember a Thomas O'Brien?

The first Tommy O'Brien was a punter a few years ago. He had quite a leg. I'm pretty sure MJA played with him and could probably elaborate, but he was the most intense punter I've ever seen. I remember sitting with RLIV watching him punt balls into the stands at halftime, that was always entertaining. He was also well known for throwing his helmet after a bad kick. Anyway, just thought his name was interesting. This guy sounds like a really good get for us, I'm pumped already.

Ahhh, those cold November games with no more than a couple thousand in the stands sipping on peppermint schnapps; watching Tommy O'brien kick balls into the stands and lose his mind after a bad punt. Good times.

Have seen O'Brien play several times. He is the real deal. Has a very big arm and is a very athletic kid. Would be an excellent get for us.........

The Argus confirmed that O'Brien has given a verbal commitment to SDSU in this morning's paper.

                      Jacks land blue chip QB
The South Dakota State football team has received a verbal commitment – its first this fall – from Winona Cotter (Minn.) quarterback Thomas O’Brien. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound senior has completed 283 of 494passes for 4,711 yards and 60 touchdowns in 20 games as a starter.

SDSU was the first school to make a scholarship offer, but O’Brien made unofficial visits to Football Bowl Subdivision members Kansas, Minnesota, Western Michigan plus Football Championship Subdivision power North Dakota State. He was also one of 70 players invited to the Elite 11 quarterback camp in Las Vegas this summer.

“The coaches were the No. 1 reason that I committed,” said O’Brien, who only turned 17 in August. “They showed a lot of commitment in offering me early.”

From Terry's blog, and a huge reason why I will always be behind Coach Stig. The man has character and leads this program the way it should be led.

                        http://blogs.argusleadermedia.com/sp...hey-do-it.html

“One of the things (Coach John Stiegelmeier) said was you don’t hug your locker when you leave, and I do think that’s true,” O’Brien said, aknowledging that not every recruit feels the same way. “It was more about the people you’re surrounded with. SDSU was about character.”

He completed seven of his last eight attempts - three for touchdowns.

O'Brien looks like a great recruit. ... With the Gophers latest upturn in optimism lasting only half a season, there might be a lot of other talented Minnesotans who would look good in an SDSU uniform.
