This is, quite possibly, the dumbest thing I have ever read on SDSUFans.com.

What exactly does the fire chief have to do with open bleachers?

Terry could have came out with a story saying Meadows was fired, the problem is whether or not he was or wasn't SDSU made it look like he wasn't. If he comes out saying he was canned, Stig won't give him the interviews, other higher ups at SDSU are upset and then he has to write stories without the real info.

SDSU like the rest of South Dakota state government is self-insured. No insurance guy.

I suppose there may be some city ordinance or state law covering bleacher safety. If not, the fire chief has no jurisdiction, either.

There is a plan to replace the east bleachers. It's called "the new stadium."

And if you think bloggers make up sources, just take a look at bulletin board posters. (There are reporters too who make up sources. It occurs with depressing regularity--sometimes they're actually called on it, but sometimes not. There's a reason the phrase "too good to check" is something of a term of art in journalism.)

Vandrovec is a first-class sports journalist. I continually wonder how long it will be before a larger media outlet than the Argus-Leader comes calling (assuming that already hasn't happened).

Bleachers are covered by the International Building Code which references ICC 300 for bleachers, grandstands, etc. I would guess the fire marshall inspects Coughlin on a yearly basis to ensure there are proper means of egress and access for emergency personel should something catatrophic happen on game day. The fire marshall is not inspecting the facility for structural deficiencies, that would be the city building departments' department. They could require SDSU to have a structural engineer look at the bleachers to verify they have the required capacity and meet ICC 300 requirements.

If the east bleachers are used as they are intended, they are safe. Having closed bleachers would make them safer, but at some point people have to be responsible and be careful because until we get a new stadium the east bleachers are gonna be open.

I would guess the Physical Plant is primarily responsible for inspecting and ensuring the safety of the E. bleachers.

No matter who does the checking, the Yellow bleachers are an eye sore, that should have been replaced a long time ago. $$$$$$$$$$$ any one can contribute, even BHSU alums. ie Joeboe22.

Anyone that says the east bleachers are ok, has not taken young children to a game.

The thought that the east bleachers are substandard at best is hardly controversial, I think.

well I'll think about that when I get a job.... I have graduated though so I am no longer a college student..... How about this, if I win a lottery over $10 million I'll give a few bucks for some new bleachers

As my post got scrutenize I'll clarify it a bit. I figured on the bleachers someone had to ok it whether it was a fire guy, city guy or an insurance guy. Maybe they don't.

Zooropa I'm not really sure what you are getting at, I don't think Meadows was fired, he may have been advised to leave or may have seen the writing on the wall that he should leave, but I don't think he was fired. What was said though if Terry did some investigating he could find sources saying that Meadows was fired. And what I was implying even if he did find those sources he may still not write the story because of the reasons I stated.

I still think bloggers make the best REPORTERS, and the reason is they have no standards, or editors, or a paycheck and don't have to go back the following Saturday to cover the game. Most bloggers do it as a hobby or as a second source of income where they make some ad money.

You can uncover and report a lot more stuff when you don't have an editor, or standards, or the name of the paper you are tied to. I don't blog but you would be surprised some of the things I've heard that have gone on at different colleges. Stuff that even the best paper reporters would be hard to get and even if they did they wouldn't be able to report it.

I would agree they are not good if you have young kids. My points have been, the bleachers are structurally sound and I'm guessing they meet required codes. They aren't the best, but we aren't getting anything different in the next 2-3 years.

                          Likewise for the west grandstand.

                            Garbage and garbage.

First of all, it's against Gannett Co. policy for reporters to use anonymous sources.

Secondly, if TV sits on information he can publish to protect access, he's a bad reporter. It's that simple. You say Terry either didn't dig or that he sat on a story, you're calling him a bad reporter. Period. It's that simple. It's that unequivocal. You are saying that TV's a bad reporter. Period. Don't try to dig out of the hole. It's what you said, it's what you meant.

Finally, how do you know that half of, or a quarter, of or even an eighth of the stuff you hear is true? Writing down stuff you hear is NOT reporting. It's gossip.

There's a lot of **** you can know just by being on campus and being a student. I'm friends with people that have/had access to the SDSU athletics and they tell me things that can't be made public. I choose not to share these things because I have respect for my friends and the people involved. I am also friends with people that have access to some USD athletic things. It's crazy how much stuff you hear before it eventually get's reported by the media.

All of that being said, there is a lot of crap that isn't true, which is why you can't believe everything. But if I know someone that is directly involved with the sport/team and I trust them, then I completely believe the stuff I hear. Some of it get's reported and some doesn't.

And if anyone wants to interpret the above as an anti-Terry Vandrovec rant or some ****, [profane expression that is not appropriate, probably]. He's a great reporter; I'm just sharing my experience with campus rumors, gossip and information.

Edit: I just read the title of this thread. Huh?
