Re: Will Summit tourney stay in Sioux Falls?
I think you guys have missed JB's point. He was not saying there would be any attendance or fan support at those locations. He just said that if their bid guarantees more money to the conference than Sioux Falls or Fargo or where ever, the League would take a look at going there. I am not sure how much more money they would have to put up to get the event, but it would be looked at.

Re: Will Summit tourney stay in Sioux Falls?
there is still places that would consider hosting it...... Las Vegas? would a Casino think about bidding it? of course the league would have to approve it..... New Orleans? Kansas City? Omaha? I just think it depends on the economy and how desperate some of these venues are going to be for events and how bad some cities want these type of events..... I do think though that Sioux Falls is that 1 city where they could have it every year, the same people will show up every year..... Its just that type of a city.....
Let's face it, outside our little worlds, the Summit is nothing. Most people couldn't name a single Summit team. The Summit is most popular in the Dakota's and that popularity is only going to continue to go up. It's all we have up here. We don't have other D1's or NBA teams to compete with. The future of the Summit is the Dakota's.....so we might as well keep it where people care about it.

Re: Will Summit tourney stay in Sioux Falls?
Why would they take the Summit Tournament to a destination where there is no fan base and everyone has to travel some distance? Sounds like a recipe to disaster to me. The players deserve to play in front of good sized crowds and it won't happen in any of the cities you have cited.

Talk that Quad Cities would bid was just that, talk. They wouldn't have a chance. The only other Summit League schools with even close to the "draw" for Sioux Falls (with NDSU and SDSU just three hours apart, are Oral Roberts and Centenary (and I can tell you Centenary doesn't add anything to that option). NO place is going to draw as well as Sioux Falls or Fargo...and that will only get an exclamation point with the addition of USD and UND (likely...of course). IMHO as long as the money trail is there, I see the tournament possibly rotating between the two every two-year period at some point. (Fargo's only problem is that they would have to host it in the FargoDome not at the NDSU basketball site...but, of course, they can do that.)

Re: Will Summit tourney stay in Sioux Falls?
Looks like a good chance the tournament may stay in Sioux Falls for a while. I just don't see anyone topping the financial package they are offering:

Re: Will Summit tourney stay in Sioux Falls?
I was volunteering my time up in the VIP section (tough job, but somebody had to do it) and most, if not all, all of the administrators were really impressed with the tournament, the crowds, and the hospitality Sioux Falls offered during the long weekend.

I think as long as those sponsors step up and the attendence continues to flourish it will stay in Sioux Falls. I also think a new arena will eventually happen and that could give it a long run in South Dakota.

The Summit League can't afford to "spread it around" for the sake of spreading it around. Go where the money is. My money is on Sioux Falls for the next bid. And the next. And the next.

Re: Will Summit tourney stay in Sioux Falls?
Just to try and simplify, here is my .02....
In a conference like the Summit, you are going to draw 90% fans of Summit schools. Let's face it, the Summit doesn't have much nationwide interest, if any. Also, fans of low to mid-major teams just don't travel much at all. Oakland brought what, 250, and that was the most of anyone save for Fargo, who is three hours north. Therefore, it has to be in a general area of not only a Summit school, but schoolS.
You also have to look at competetion from the surrounding area. KC seems like a nice idea, but they always host regional NCAA Tournament games and are in Big XII country, so you're only going to draw Summit fans and there is one school in a 4 hour radius. Same goes for Tulsa. SUU and Centenary are not even in the question.
Play it in Sioux Falls, Fargo or somewhere in the general vicinity of the Michigan, Illinois, Indiana schools. They are all somewhat close to each other and KC and even close enough for the Dakota schools to charter busses for the tourney.
SF for the next two years. Then let a heartland school do it, then Fargo. If Fargo isn't ready, send it back to SF for another couple years. I think SF and Fargo are the only two where I think it wouldn't get stale, even if you played it there every year. Let's be honest, SF is the ideal place for it.

More likely that the new Independence Event Center (new 6,000 seat hockey arena in Independence, MO just outside Kansas City) would bid on the Summit League.
(I go by the place about weekly, it's at the intersection of I-70 and I-470 in the eastern KC metro area.)
There's nothing in Omaha to either draw Omaha to the Summit League, or the Summit League to Omaha.
Plus, the facility's too big for the league.
Peoria could work, (don't know why they'd bid it) its home of Catapillar, has a 7,200 seat arena...
Moline IL (Quad Cities).. also could work, home of John Deere.... had the tournament from 96-99.....
The problems with Peoria and Moline is who in Illinois cares about WIU in March? they either care about the Cubs, White Sox or the Illini.....
