Re: Becky Francis "retires" at Oakland (update: "fired for cause&quot

Just for fun, let's look at over bearing boss's that get too involved in their employee's personal lives and abuse their power over them to cause them undue grief and stress and anxiety, helping that person cultivate a sense of being worthless and/or hopeless in doing their job right .Are they Evil,or do they get a raise for keeping the workplace standards high? It's all up to ones own ideas of whats good or not,it's all contingent upon ones own sense of morality.

Have to agree with filbert on this one. Hitler = evil. What the Oakland coach is reported to have done does not rise anywhere near that level in my estimation.

Look at the definition of evil according to Merriam-Webster: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/evil

You don't think what she did to those players could be characterized as "morally reprehensible"? "Causing harm"? Get the **** out of here.

Misguided???? Look at what she did:

That ALONE is enough to put her in the evil camp. That is a ****ing disgusting thing to do to another person, especially when in a position of power.

I know you aren't trying to defend her, filbert, but c'mon.
You are correct, I'm not defending her actions. I am however objecting to a certain "burn the witch" tone that's all to easy to take, and is honestly becoming more prevalent and tolerated. It's easier to join the lynch mob than to stand in front of them, pointing out to them that they've become a lynch mob.

When a human being looks at him/herself in the mirror each morning, a little sliver of evil looks back. Virtue consists primarily of making sure that the little sliver of evil stays little, and to the extent possible, stays in the mirror.

Enjoy your sense of moral outrage if that's your thing, but just take care that you do not yourself become that which you despise.

I'm not outraged at Francis. I'm disappointed and saddened.

I guess it depends on your perspective. If I was the parent of a daughter who played for Francis and had her self-worth lowered far enough by the coach that she developed an eating disorder, I would be outraged and would consider the coach to be evil.

I would also expect to have much the same reaction, yes. I am not however in that situation.

There's a good, valid, rational reason why we don't commonly put relatives and loved-ones of crime victims on juries, and it is precisely the point about perspective that you make.

Well said bigticket1. Personalize it and see how it could damage your own child's self-worth for years and years and it certainly could be considered evil.

Funny, but Becky's situation is not. I am amazed my choice of a word generates this many comments. Oh well bring on Butler and let the show begin.

I'm not sure who you are replying to, but neither Filbert nor I made that claim.

Also, the Crusades and Jihads were/are events, thus aren't capable of thought, so I'm really not sure where you were going with your post.

Oh heck its just another day in court for you!!, How this whole affair was allowed to happen is still mind boggling, especially in a sophisticated state like Michigan. They obviously did not have a good staff policy writer in nepotism. Do you smell a law suit towards Oakland coming? I do. Or if they have a slush fund somewhere that could be used to pay off all the unhappy people, then they might be okay.

Somehow I don't regret Oakland going to the Horizon Conference.

Pretty simple how it happened. Her boss, the president of the university, was also her husband.

One of them should have had to resign when they got married. Why that was not required is the mind-boggling part I guess.

No nepotism rules that's how it happened. The policy should cover dating and relationships amongst employees. The president should have to follow the same rules as the janitor. Its going to be an expensive lesson.

I would guess that because the Women's Basketball Coach was not a direct report to the University President that they had no issue. All should be careful with the stones they throw on this topic given the glass houses close by.

One of the articles linked in the thread said that the Becky's supervisor reported directly to the president. Her supervisor turned Becky's yearly employment evaluations into the president. Would make it somewhat difficult for the supervisor to start making accusations against Becky without the fear of repercussions now wouldn't it?

Would be much different if Becky was married to the dean of one of the colleges.
