I am wondering why we open the dams starting in Pierre. Wouldn't it make more sense to open them up in Yankton first than Pickstown and work your way back to Pierre? Lower the level down below and work backwards to Pierre. Seems like we have higher banks farther down the river. Someone who knows more please respond.

I think the theory is Yankton is the last stop to protect the rest of the way down the river... we are the last dam.

I took my daughter to our favorite resturant Murdo's today and the water is right up to the deck... will post a few pictures as soon as I get them downloaded.

It is CRAZY out there with the people wandering around.

My point is that the water and flooding will get to you anyway, so why not open up and pass it down the river. why start the flooding in the middle of the state?

Right now, those dams downstream are open and passing out water to take some pressure of Oahe. But there is so much water coming from the tributaries, it doesn't really matter that the downstream dams are open.

leeshajo, have they started sandbagging down there yet? I just spent the last four hours out there filling bags, not sure how much good its going to do though

Virtually no rain here today and the temps were in the 60's. The longer our temps stay low, the better for everyone downstream.

The last storm we had was a 500 year event. Unbelievable and that is what everyone is dealing with downstream from MT.

This is good news. The press conference in Bismarck yesterday at 5:30 announced that things had improved in terms of cfs and releases. Some of those people in Bismarck built way to close to the river. Some real estate guy is laughing all the way to the bank and should be billed by the Fed for the relocation fees and buy outs.

I think that would send a message to would be developers. Not that is likely to happen, but would be worth the effort.

Thanks for the video. I was at Murdo's a few weeks ago and he said he had never seen it run as fast or as high as it was then in his life. Turns out that was NOTHING compared to this! A scary situation, and our prayers go out to folks up and down the river.

That is the chance you take building close to the river. Most of the time it's beautiful, but the potential for disaster is always there.

The good thing about the situation in Pierre is people have a chance to salvage their belongings. Out here last week the problem was flash flooding. No chance to save anything.

Larson's landing did all last week... they put the call out for help to fill sandbags... and help evacuate people about 1/2 hour ago... my friend just put a call out and asked to go get boxes and help them pack up their houses (her mom lives across the street from her.)... we are all meeting there at noon. They are about 1/4 mile from the river, but they want to be safe and have everything out.

We were trying to guess how many houses could be impacted and in the riverside acres area I think there are maybe 300 homes... and that is just one development. I think about 5000 live perm. out by the river area.

the issue is it is all in a bowl and flat.. so when the river comes up it will spread quickly.

yeah they are open, they have record release at Gavins Point right now or will soon. I was at Ft. Randall today and they have 9 of 20 flood gates open. I'm not sure what cfs that is, but I've never seen more then 1 or 2 open. Niabrara NE is about ready to close hwy 12 (I think its 12). Was down there today and they are about a foot from the hwy, there are sandbars that have docks on them that are completely under water. Down by the golf course in Springfield the bay you have to go around is completely full and there is a spot where the road is close to the river that its about to go over. Down between Tabor area and Springfield a lot of irrigation pumps are being moved, talked to a guy and they said they have been told it could get 6 foot higher.

I've been told they have to be careful with Gavins point because if they release to much they can cause serious flooding in Sioux City and Omaha but I don't know if that is true or not. The way it was explained to me was its a lot easier to flood the few homes between Yankton and Ft. Randall then it is to flood Sioux City and Omaha.

I took the kiddos to eat at Murdo's yesterday eve. Water is WAY high. He is in danger I think.

If you are in the Yankton area and want to help fill sandbags they are asking for anyone 16 or older to head to the Hyw maintenance shop on Broadway, by Morgan Square.
