    Re: Missouri River flooding

Has the Oahe uncontrolled spillway been used ever since the dam closed? There are 3 flow paths for those earthen dams. 1)hydropower tubes - They should be running furiously. I believe that's the video that Slosho shared. 2) the gates on the west side with a stilling basin at the base. This option would handle flood discharges up to the Standard Project Flood (SPF). 3) The emergency spillway for discharges above the SPF up to the Probable Maximum Flood. This is the grass lined channel about 1/2 mile west of the dam face. The flow path goes down the first small valley west of the dam, and reenters the Missouri River downstream of the gated channel.

Ft. Peck, Garrison, Oahe, Ft. Randall have flood control storage capacities. Big Bend and Gavins Pt. dams basically are run of river hydropower facilities with very limited (compared to other four) capacities.

Yes, there will be flooding, but unless the emergency spillway is being run, it should be within a flood easement that the Corps probably purchased.

Those of us fighting the Mississippi River flooding here in New Orleans salute and wish our Dakota brethern similiar success. May want to buy flood insurance. Have to wait 30 days for the benefits to potentially kick in, and if loss is already in progress can't get paid. However, if hang in there past 30 days, avoid the flood disaster loans, and get paid for your losses, not the minimal to get back on feet.

The video slosho posted was the stilling basin. But yes, both the stilling basin and the hydropower tubes are running constantly right now. During they day, most of the water is running through the dam to create electricity and at night, most of the water is going through the stilling basin.

Right now, the water is about a foot away from an uncontrolled release, if it gets that high, it's going to get seriously ugly here.

Going back to your point on flood insurance, these people seriously upset me http://www.keloland.com/videoarchive...oFile=052611nb You live on the river, why don't you have flood insurance? Even if you are told you aren't in the flood plain, you live on the river, you should be prepared for everything.

People complaining about the Corps not doing anything and asking why they didn't release this in January don't understand that the Missouri River basin has gotten a ton of rain in the past month (I heard a year's worth) that is causing all this. Nothing could have been done to prevent this.

          Re: Missouri River flooding

Looks like Bismarck is going up to about 120,000 CFS by Thursday, which in return we are going to have to go up as well. They haven't said what we are going up to yet, but I'm guessing it's going to be pretty close to that.

Those numbers from Ft Peck are insane, the Garrison dam will have uncontrolled release very soon, which will be disastrous. Where is the level of the spillway listed on that link, I can't find it?

Here's a video taken on the 27th of Garrison dam.

Oahe is about a foot and a half from the top. If Ft. Peck goes, you guys are going and we're right behind you

Garrison goes over the spillway somewhere around 1853 to 1856 problem is Ft. Peck has some controllable release still but the Yellowstone River which is flowing the brunt of the water is not damned anywhere from West yellowstone all the way till it meets west of Williston, they technically dont know the exact number coming up that river in the near future.

Garrison breaks out over the spillway the estimated CFS can reach 800,000 the controlable flow is only 140,000 so its WAY more desparate than they are leading on right now. The Bismarck and Army corp press conference scheduled for 1:30pm Central time has been moved to 4:00pm and will be on www.kfgo.com or if you live in the listening area AM 790 KFGO or AM 550 KFYR. as anyone south of Bis will be impacted its well worth your time to listen and hear whats coming. Good Luck to all

WOW, pure un organized crap from the county comissioners and City of Bismarck. People need to make life changing choices and time is at the essence but they again have pushed the press conference back to 5:30pm now.

We were told the max output would be 110,000 CFS by the end of June, that was just pumped up to 150,000 in a couple of weeks. It keeps getting worst down here.

At 150,000 cfs does that raise the potential flood level up beyond 1434 ft?

Yep, it's up to 1436 now. Who knows what's going to happen anymore

I feel for you guys. Sounds like you will get help from the State on mitigating the affects. Keep the head up, that is more help than we've gotten the past few at Poinsett.
