The water you are getting is from the 8+" of rain we have gotten in May.

Some places actually increased snow pack over the weekend.

I think the Corps is trying to give people a chance to prepare before they ramp up flows. It would have been hard to prepare for a 500 year event. It's fortunate most everyone there is getting their belongs out of their houses. Many folks this way lost everything because the flooding happened overnight.
ouch, I thought it had already started melting. does 60's and 70's melt snow up in the mt's?

Tell me again just what the dams were built for? Oh, yea. flood control down river. Guess they are controlling the flood. "We'll flood just this area and not that." What an unbelievable spring this year and the amount of snow, rain, and cold temps that have happened. The fields
here in the Thumb section of Michigan are flooded, they predicted that Lake Huron, St Clair River, and Lake St. Clair would be a foot to two feet below normal level and are now running above or near normal levels. Darn Mexicans el nino and la nina,

60's and 70's here (in Billings) means it's likely in the 50's or even cooler at 8,000 feet and above. That does not really mean a massive snow melt which you stated. At any rate this is the first time we have seen much of the sun since April.

Forecasted high was 74 degrees today. If it gets there it will be the first time since last October. Gives an idea how cool the spring has been.

We are just beginning to face our snow pack issue in Western Colorado. Our spring was like yours, cold, wet and the snow pack continued to grow. The Missouri flooding is the start of what will be a long summer west of the Mississippi. Our snow pack above 10,000 hasn't even begun to melt and is now at 250% of average. Forest Service roads which are normally open on Memorial Day weekend are sitting under 20 feet of snow. Areas to the north of us have an average snow pack pushing 350% all of which will be heading east towards the Ft Collins area. It is going to get crazy as the temps rise. Good luck to all those in the Midwest sitting in the flood plain.

              Re: Missouri River flooding

Today they announced that they are preparing the Oahe emergency flood gates in case they need to be used by making a channel so the water would flow right back to the river. Unlike the other dams Oahe's emergency flood gates don't have a cement spillway and have to channel there way back to the River. Garrison is similar but Garrison has a 43 acre cement spillway and spillway pond and then an area of natural ground it has to pass to get back to the river. Ft. Peck is similar as well but has an even smaller area to get back to the river. http://www.keloland.com/news/news/fl....cfm?Id=116064

if they have to open that up its not good.

If you have google earth you can see the spillway, its small and located northwest a mile or so up from the dam on 1806

just wait: NCAA will see Stig next to a football player and *BAM* secondary violation.

Seriously, though, I bet compliance had to file stuff with the NCAA before this could happen.

The young man in the picture with Stig is his son. Preexisting relationship.

Stig was with the basketball players and volleyball players, so this may have been done to avoid any kind of secondary violation. It's a theory, have no idea how close to reality it is though,

                          This:

                          http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/footbal...n=ncaaf-260154

What's interesting is this response by the NCAA:

Boise State University contacted the NCAA on July 19 regarding providing support to the family. The NCAA compliance staff informed the university on July 20 it could seek a waiver and there is considerable past precedent for granting such waivers. The university chose not to seek a waiver, which would have been granted immediately. In the past 12 months alone, the NCAA has received and granted five waivers to institutions during similar difficult and unfortunate circumstances.
As it pertains to subsequent revelations regarding the quality of Boise State's compliance office: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=6476963

It seems that Boise State's compliance office is a bit of a mess.

                          ----

Hopefully the levees hold, the spillway gates stay shut, and in August we can all look back on this and laugh.......

                                Re: Missouri River flooding

We are officially in the waiting stage. Everything was prepped and basically ready to go by this morning when the releases increased to 100,000 cfs, which will eventually work its way up to 150,000 cfs on Tuesday. Now, its a wait and see. Will the levees hold? Will the sandbags hold? Will they have to go even HIGHER on the releases? Will they have to use the emergency spillway?

So many questions, we should know the answer to many of them by Tuesday.
