They're a little... "special" down in Vermillion.

I think they get it. They just like stirring the pot since they know it aggravates some.

South Dakota's Team is a marketing tactic USD has used for awhile now. Not sure why that rubs you the wrong way so bad. Last I check USD was the first University in SD. Try not to repeat this if you lose to UNI on Saturday. SMH!

Re: New SDSU Jacks website just in time for Hobo Days

It is not unrealistic to guess that USD's official marketing department would put together a bogus website. Think about this: the "South Dakota's Team" slogan was brought out the year SDSU was leaving DII and moving to DI. The slogan didn't last very long. Seems South Dakotans just couldn't buy into the self-appointment for programs that, let's face it, were pretty poor. Another example: the "U-dot" promotion. My recollection is that occurred a year or so after South Dakota's Team fizzled. Copying at least one other university in the country, USD came up with the U. logo. Lead balloons went over better. Logo dropped.

Another example? Renting a billboard to advertise "Take a Friend to Dinner" -- promoting ticket sales to a football game at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium. If the sign had any impact, SDSU benefitted from gate receipts. Guess who won the game?

USD's marketing people have a proven history of missteps. So another dumb idea comes along. Seems reasonable to look to the usual doofuses.

one other point: coyotecrazie also wrote: "Last I check (sic) USD was the first University in SD." The claim is 1862, right? I won't dispute that the territorial legislature authorized USD as the first university. But, coyotecrazie, when did USD first hold classes? When was the first building at the university constructed? (I know the answers to those questions.) South Dakota State University was authorized by the territorial legislature in 1881 (as a result of the 1862 Morrill Act passed by the United States Congress). Now, look up when SDSU held its first classes and when SDSU had its first building. Big difference? USD claiming to have started in 1862 has to be accompanied by a lot of winking. Think of the time: people were promoting the development of new territory and often they said about anything to get people to think about moving here. (Again, look up when USD held its first classes...compare that to SDSU.)

              coyotecrazie: good name selection.

LOL...good one! I think they average one new marketing campaign a year. They're easy to overlook and forget.

                    Here are the comparative facts:

USD was authorized -- not funded -- by the Dakota Territory in 1862.
SDSU was authorized -- not funded -- by the Dakota Territory in 1881.
(I think the authorization date is pretty weak stuff but both schools use those years for printing stuff on sweatshirts. I don't know what's magical about having a bill pass the territorial legislature when no action -- i.e. funding and development -- takes place. I think it is just as legitimate to claim SDSU's founding goes back to the 1862 Morrill Act creating land-grant institutions.)

First classes (now that seems to be a little more concrete):
USD, 1882 in the Clay County Courthouse.
SDSU, 1884 for preparatory classes and 1885 for college classes.

                    First building:
                    USD, Old Main, started 1883.
                    SDSU, Old Central, started 1883.

One thing is certain, when it comes to gross exaggeration, guess who "wins"? A school claiming to have started in 1862 that didn't have classes until 20 years later? Or, a school claiming to have started in 1881 which had classes a couple of years later. Some things never change.

                    Fear Ed!

                    Go Jacks!

Wow my friend, whoever came up with that has your boards panties in a wad. And for you to think it was the administration that did it is even more absurd. Whoever did it got in your heads big time. And for you not to even chuckle a little tells me you spend to many hours in your office.

Marketing our our program has been an udder failure. (SDSU humor there). 605...dumb. U-dot even dumber. Śouth Dakotas team...good idea bad timing. Then to bash our school? Maybe the law school.

Oh well, stay in Brookings. YOU CAN GO ANYWHERE FROM THERE. ( yeah, that's a good one )

i cant believe that one link has gotten inside your heads like it did. Good grief, CHILLAX

You are spending way too much time in front of your computer when you should be celebrating Hobo Week. Hopefully you can get to Brookings on Saturday for the 25 year anniversary of the most famous Hobo Day.

My favorite USD promotional move came in 2012. That's when the Coyotes moved a prime home game, against NDSU, from Vermillion to Sioux Falls. Unfortunately, NDSU fans outnumbered USD fans at the game, and the Bison smoked the Coyotes 54-0 on the field. That was a classic.
