While I agree with the sentiment expressed, keep in mind the most recent activity is not the ND government...the petition drives are by citizens and groups of citizens. Those same citizens obviously do not think the UND nickname is a stupid topic. So I come down to a slightly different conclusion: The people who keep the nickname issue alive are nuts and it would tick me off if they cause any more state resources to be spent on this subject.

You don't think that some of the wingnuts in the ND legislature aren't involved in this,albeit behind the scenes ?

Wow. Of course if they succeed and the nickname stays and the university is tossed out of the Big Sky (as expected), they'll be destroying the UND athletic programs, harming hundreds of current and potential student athletes, and damaging the reputation of the university. But they'll have their stupid nickname. They can go sit in the empty Alerus Center and the Betty and admire the logo wishing there were some games going on there.

All I know is I would be PISSED OFF, if the SD Government was wasting as much time and money on something as stupid as a University Nickname, which they should really have no say in anyway, as far as I'm concerned.

The North Dakota Secretary of State has approved the forms of two petitions for reinstating the "Fighting Sioux" nickname for UND sports.

Two different petitions. Anyone confused? From the story linked above:

One asks for a constitutional amendment to require UND to keep the Fighting Sioux nickname. Supporters have to turn in about 27,000 petition signatures by Aug. 8 to put the issue on the ballot in November 2012.

The second petition would reverse the Legislature's decision to let UND drop the nickname. That petition needs more than 13,000 names by Feb. 7.

Two different petitions due to the time frame. The deadline to repeal the legislature's law is Feb 7. To repeal it, they need 13,000 names. A month and a half is a pretty tight window for that, so they're hedging their bets and running a second petition at the same time. The second petition is intended to write the Fighting Sioux nickname into the state constitution. To get this amendment onto the general ballot, they will need twice the number of names(27k), but will have six more months to complete the work.
