Re: Wegher released from Iowa scholarship

As Deadspin.com asked, what is going on at Iowa?

Their top 3 running backs have now left the program. Ouch.

The rumors have certainly been flying around. I have little doubt the USD coaches would hand him the keys to the dome if he asked for them. I have no idea if Stig would consider offering him a scholarship or not. I don't think he would entertain questions about it right now.

My guess, if Brandon asked either place for a chance to play he would likely get that chance. Time will tell.

Could you imagine........going from running the ball at the Orange bowl to running the ball in Brookings SD? I just cant see that happening. It would be worse running it in Vermillion, but seriously!

I just think talent is more important. That's only my opinion, though.

And I hate hate hate that people judge people's character from afar. You are in no position to say it is "obvious" that he has no character. That's a load of ****.
Agreed. Sick of that around here. I think I am somewhat in the know and I have heard NOTHING of him being trouble. Only thing remotely close is he was having girlfriend troubles in Iowa. That doesn't mean diddly-poo though.

If he transfers within the FBS he has to sit out another year. And since he redshirted last year that means he has 3 years left to play 3 years. So sitting out another year would mean he flat out loses a year of eligibility, doesn't play for two whole years, and returns as a junior. Taking this into consideration I would be surprised if he DOESN'T go FCS. UNI, USD and SDSU have to be top of the list. SDSU has a RB opening (I know Kool is the incumbent, but Wegher back there and Kool at WR/spelling Wegher at RB would be our best bet).

And paying his own way due to the "no transfer to another Big 10 school" rule? That is hard to believe.

I'm not sure he would have to sit out another year if he transferred to another FBS school - he didn't actually play for Iowa at all this year, so it could be considered his "sit" year or redshirt year by the NCAA. Since he played as a true freshmen, he could have three years left where ever he decides to transfer, but would have three years left for sure at a FCS school.

He was on scholarship for fall semester,so this year is his redshirt year, and he has to sit out next year as his transfer year,so he would only have two years eligibility at a FBS school.

Sure, I can imagine it happening. Players transfer down (and up) quite often. Wegher wasn't born in a football stadium. A couple years ago, he was playing high school ball in Sioux City. Most of his college days are probably in his future.

Re: Wegher released from Iowa scholarship

Since he was on scholarship but wasn't an active member of the team he would most likely seek a NCAA waiver to be able to play next year. I think its White who was suspended from Minnesota last year and didn't play transfered to Iowa State applied for a waiver but was denied. (basketball)

As far as where he will transfer, who knows, I think you have to put both SDSU and USD on the list SDSU because of his dad, USD because of location. Possibly he goes JuCo, but really who knows. I think many people will be looking at him.

As far as drug program and Iowa. I think its hard to throw stones at a school that got caught so to speak in terms of drugs or NCAA sanctions or anything. Anyone who has been on a college campus knows that there is athletes who smoke pot, or do other type of drugs. I know of certain SDSU, USD, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota players that do drugs, the thing is making sure you have programs/rules in place for when they get caught.

5 Yard penalty for smack? Some sort of slap on the wrist I believe is warranted

I live in Iowa too and nothing but rumors have spread. Wegher and his family haven't said anything. Iowa's coaching staff said it was "personal". So unless you are bff's with the family, I doubt you know the story.

And if you do know the whole story, why not enlighten us?

Two of the top 3 have left - Wegher and Hampton. Robinson is suspended for the bowl game - more than likely for grades (he was benched the first quarter of the tOSU game for academic reasons).
