That's not exactly a ringing endorsement of the Arena site.
Wow,someone who thinks an Event Center will be good for Sioux Falls no matter where it's built - what a unique viewpoint.

This effort looks impressive and to have a 2014 completion date is noble. Maybe they need to sell this to the old guys sitting around drinking coffee at HyVee and Sunshine Markets. Those are the ones who will vote.

And here I was hoping they'd name their group Just Build The Damn Thing Sioux Falls

If you pull the skin back from those business many are owned by same families (5 in one case)or have ties to city council members or the mayor. You certainly didn't see any of the heavyweights from Sanford. The Healthcare companies have to show up in some fashion regardless of location as they are selling quality of life to people they are recruiting from major markets. The group supporting downtown and those on sidelines for downtown are much more diverse. 50 million economic impact by putting at the arena what a joke. City finally moving railroad tracks out of downtown in the next two years which makes downtown even more appealing. http://www.keloland.com/NewsDetail6162.cfm?Id=117809

The city, county and school district are still heavily dependent on property taxes, right? Or am I just imagining that?

Build it now, appears to just want it built, and doesnt really take a stance that its best at the current site. I feel the BIN supporters will be the reason why this does not pass. IF BIN joined BID having both groups from day 1 saying we want it built, while one side says build it here, the support would be so much better and probably would have had a better chance at passing. BIN I feel is a day late and a dollar short. They missed the 8 ball in building up support that this project needed from day one. The Mayor really has not done anything to help his cause, BIN is to late joinin the party, and the BID and the no, no matter what group will win. It will take support from all sides who want a new EC but I don't see BID leaving its view to join the otherside, so I feel the BIN side should join forces and push for a DT site after it fails the election this year. Or next year when ever the vote happens. The positive is, in the next few years the train tracks should be moved out so many of the problems that the DT site had will be fixed and then become an advantage, showing the DT site will be a better option then the current proposal, more parking, or spin off development, cleaner area etc....

It has been a long time since I have spent much time in the downtown area. Are the tracks that will be removed the ones that go through Falls Park and then north to the State Pen? Or are there others that will be moved?

I agree with what goon said. BIN seems to just want it built. I'm in that boat.
I think that the arena site could be better if they get conventions like Pheasants Forever or other groups like that. If they came into SF, that would bring more money to the city than the downtown site would in several months. If they don't get anything like that, it would be worse.
I wonder if it's fair to say that every year it isn't built it will cost the city about $10,000,000+. That would include about 7 million in prices for materials, labor, etc... and an easy 3+ million that the city will miss out on for not having one. The new arena could draw things to SF that bypass the city with the outdated building they have now.
It's better to get it right but the sooner that people get it right, the cheaper/better it will be.
I've been to the arena for a concert, HS basketball games and college basketball games and that might be it. Every time that I've been there, I've managed to find my way into the city to spend some money. If you don't get there before concerts, you might not have time to mess around afterwards. Same thing goes for most night time events. Either you have a room and are staying the night or you want to get home. The all day long things and several day things are where the city will make the money. What will bring that to town, I don't know.

Pheasants forever attendance last year: 30k.

Sioux Falls doesn't have enough hotel rooms.

Kind of. There's a BNSF switching yard that has outlets to the S (along the river S. of Drake Springs, through Cherry Rock Park, and Southeastern), the E (across the Big Sioux at the Falls and then along Rice St.), and to the N (along Phillips/First Av. past the pen and by the airport). The bridges on Phillips and over the Falls carry BNSF traffic out of/into the switching yard from the N.

If I understand the current proposal, the track that runs through Falls Park would have to be realigned, requiring a new bridge, if the switching yard is moved out on Rice. The other option puts the switching yard way south in the middle of one of the sections bordered by Southeastern and Cliff (south of 84th St.) The objection to that location is that it's zoned for residential growth, and train yards are, well, ugly. I'm sure they don't mean to be, but they really are.

The stock yards just closed, so there is land available nearby...
