    Define 'succeed'.

If your definition of success is "cost over a hundred million and seat 12,000" then sure it will 'succeed' anywhere. If you have any other definition of success........................... not so much.

As a Sioux Falls resident that talks to a fair number of other Sioux Falls residents, I cannot understand how polls come out to favor an Arena site. As I said before, NOBODY I have talked to says they prefer an Arena site. Maybe I just don't talk to the right people.

I can end this debate here and now.

Stu Whitney of the Argus Leader favors the Arena site.

Does anyone really want to be on the same side of an issue as Stu????

        Case closed.

Im going to start making plans for 2015 to attend the Summit elsewhere thanks to people like you. I hear Fargo is quite nice in March.
It's because of events like the Summit League Tournament the new event center should be downtown. If you want an example of the my way or the highway attitude you have to look no further than Mayor Mike. If you want ridiculous than share with us why it makes sense to cram another large facility into an already congested spot and in a industrial park area that has consistently shown no new economic or commercial development. The only decent restaurant (Michaels) which I went to at the last Summit League tournament has closed. Bunch of folks I know are not going to support another losing proposition at the arena site to just get it done. I think many people from out of Sioux Falls are underestimating the passion by many people for getting this right and not just settling for the easy quick fix. If that means it takes a few more years so be it.

I understand the appeal for building an events center downtown.. but when the BID-ers are comparing Huether to Adolf Hitler, that pretty much does it for me. I have now christened the BID-ers as "BID-iots"

I agree the tone and rethoric on both view points have gotten out of hand and now you turn around and do your own name calling? The issue with Huether is I give him credit for responding to people's e-mails including my own, but if you support downtown for the event center his consistent response is he firmly believes that only the Arena site will pass voter approval so isn't interested in comparing downtown benefits. To me that is not leadership. He should not be surprised when he is unable to bring everyone together and this thing loses big.

If Sioux Falls can't afford to do this right, then they certainly can't afford to do it at all.
To be debating merits of a location, seems to be way too premature. Will the electorate approve the EC? If you can not get past that question, sites mean very little as far as doing it right.

Also, I don't like people calling me small-minded and backwards when I suggest the reasons WHY the EC should be built out by the Arena. Seem like a lot of people have pie-in-the sky dreams about this thing being downtown. But when you have to mark up the cost due to the infrastructure improvements that will be necessary, compared to what's available at the arena, AND you're trying to convince Sioux Falls taxpayers to shell out dough for this thing, I would want to present to them that this location at the arena will save money compared to all the work that will be needed downtown.

By the way, I have NOTHING against downtown. I was just downtown this weekend and it looked like it was a blast. I liked the outdoor tables at the bars and restaurants and such... but I've also been downtown in the middle of winter at the Pavilion and traffic was to put it mildly, TARFU. Unless you make some massively wider streets (and risk ruining the charm of DT), it's going to go directly from TARFU to FUBAR.

As for parking... the BID folks say there's plenty of spaces downtown. But how many of those spaces are leased or private lots? And how much will those places charge for "event parking"? If you're going to see a concert, do you really want to shell out 15-20 bucks JUST to have a place to park? I don't think so.

I've suggested this... because basically this boils down to the downtown business getting a massive influx of people and their money... why not offer free shuttles to the Arena location, like the do in the Cities.... they can park (relatively) close to the businesses, drink or eat, take the shuttle straight to the door, then get take the shuttle back to their cars (after an appetizer or a nightcap or two). Why hasn't DTSF promoted this idea? My God, that would not only mean more money for the businesses, but also some good will as well!

But right now, the BID-ers and BID-iots want to take their ball and go home. Fine. This thing goes to a vote and it fails.... Construction costs are going up... Building materials are going up... everything is getting more expensive. This proposal fails, it's going to be a HELL of a lot more expensive at either location and you're going to end up with less support than before.

The location isn't perfect, but at the same time, we deal with what we've got. That's what we've always done as South Dakotans and more often than not we've surprised ourselves at how well we make things work. And the way some people are acting, you'd thing the Fighting Sioux Name Supporters had found a new cause to latch onto!

Because if *one person* compares Huether to Hitler, it invalidates every other argument marshaled against the Arena site, right?

12,000 people leaving from one parking lot at the Arena will be every bit as bad as downtown--if not worse.

Only a small percentage of downtown parking is private. The bulk of it is public which means no "Event Parking" prices.

Finally, I live near the pavilion, and traffic after events there is bad only if you've never been in a town larger than Parkston. Again, I *LIVE* downtown, and I KNOW what Pavilion traffic looks like. I KNOW how long it takes to clear out. 20 minutes tops.

hi, i'm new to this board and what yoou think they would use this arena for other than concerts and the summit league tournaments, would the stampede, skyforce and the storm all play there or stay at the arena. don't know what kind of attendance these teams get, if they even need to play in a 12,000 seat arena. pretty sure not , right?
i know a few years ago hearing that the skyforce would regularlly get 4,000 to 5,000 a game what about the other 2?

The plan is that the Skyforce would continue to use the Arena, while the Stampede would use the Events Center (the rink at the Arena should be larger and the sight lines are atrocious for hockey. I think the Storm would go to the Events Center as well, and for much the same reasons.
