Shoot. Why not build it off the Humboldt exit, or in Mitchell, or in Pierre for that matter (center of the state! easy access for everyone!!)

Ease of access for out-of-towners is irrelevant.

It is to the greedy people who own land in downtown SF who are pushing a bad position for their own benefit.

          Bottom line, no parking
12,000 people work downtown. Where do they park?

            Think that through:

How can it be a bad position if it leads to significant economic development?

They pay $$$$$ to park and it is a pain.

Who says it will be significant, oh yea the people who own land in the area who will benefit. I tend to believe an independent studies over people with vested interests. Maybe you own land down there maybe your friends do. Whatever.

I am in downtown Sioux Falls a lot and it is hard to get to, parking is hard to find, and you have to pay to do it most of the time. What are you going to do on the Monday of the Summit Tourney when your 12,000 are working downtown and you have 12,000 at the games?

Oh by the way it is a bad position because the people of Sioux Falls don't want it downtown but an overactive minority is trying to stuff it down folks throats or if the downtown folks can't win then they are willing to poison the well. Sorry I wasn't clear before

City ramps and city streets are free parking after 6:00PM. There will be plenty of free parking. As to the 'pain' factor, people will get used to it. Nothing quite as pretty as the Arena parking lot on a beautiful Tuesday morning, all that gorgeous empty blacktop roasting in the sun.................

The independent study that allegedly endorses the Arena site projects $50M in follow-on construction downtown vs. $6M at the Arena site by 2016.

You won't have 12,000 at that game. And if there's a bit of a squeeze on parking then, well..... Certainly the city should stop holding Jazzfest, right? You ever tried to park there?

You are dreaming. If they build an arena downtown you can't really believe that the folks who own those lots wont charge for "event parking". You can't be that naive. And what about events during the work week or is the downtown event center only going to be open after 6 pm and on weekends?

As I said, I LIVE downtown. You don't want to debate me on this subject. The city owns thousands of parking spots downtown. They will own the 1,500 to 2,000 spots that will be built as part of this project, and many of those spots will be paid for by parking department revenue. The only private operators of significance in the area are Cherapa and (eventually) CNA.

                          Zooropa,

I hear a lot of "well yea it will be bad but people will get used to it", or "well sure it is not ideal but who cares about out of towners and the $$$$$ they bring to Sioux Falls". Good customer service model.

So do you own any property downtown? I seem to recall that the folks involved with Cherapa are big in the build it downtown movement, funny how that works.

I have lived and worked in major metro areas. Paying for "event parking" is always part of the deal and it would be in SF if they build it downtown.

                              Re: Sioux Falls Event Center

Parking at the Arena will be a problem. They are adding 12,000 seats and 800 parking spots. Neither solution is 'ideal' from a parking perspective.

And as for the 'who cares about out-of-towners', I absolutely stand by that remark.

Consider Joe Blow from East Overshoe. He wants to come to Sioux Falls, go to the Shania Twain concert and leave immediately afterward. He decides not to come because 'it's downtown!'

                              I have one question:

Where else is he going to see Shania Twain?

                              And I have one observation:

                              $45 ticket * .06 = $2.70

                              $25 in beer and lousy arena food * .08 = $2.00

$6 value meal from BK on his way out of town (which would require a detour since there aren't even any FAST FOOD restaurants between the Arena in I-29/Russell or I-29/Madison St) * .08 = .48

By placing the events center downtown, Sioux Falls has just cheated itself out of (gasp) $5.18 in tax revenue.

To place that in perspective, it would take 23,166,023 "Joe Blows" to pay for the arena. That's 772,201 Joe Blows per year on a 30 year bond, or 2,116 Joe Blows per day for 30 years to pay for the arena.

Do you understand why I consider that particular visitor to be of limited value?

No. And as I said, they stand to benefit economically from a downtown location. NOBODY stands to benefit economically from an Arena location (that's why Jim Enteman got to vote last night---or rather very early this morning).

And economic development is what enables the city to keep up with a growing population.
