    Re: Mascot/logo news?

Someone in the know can correct me, but I think that the situation is that SDSU doesn't want to get into a copyright tussle, not that Warner Bros. has actually complained about it.

It's possible that they have, but I think instead this is another instance of SDSU being proactive and taking care of a problem before it becomes a problem.

(There's also the legendary letter to SDSU from WB saying that our rabbit is OK . . . some folks remember it but nobody can find it.

    That's all, folks!)

Well... I have a bit of insight about how the current bunny came to be. We'll talk sometime.

        Re: Mascot/logo news?

I think the current bunny was developed in about the very early 1970s (1970-72, give or take a year on either side) and was an obvious twin or close cousin to the logo for Jackrabbit Bus Line out of Sioux Falls.

I have good info that says it was based literally on Bugs with changes made to the teeth and the feet.

Unfortunately, A LOT of people don't understand this....thus, ANY new design will be shunned by a ton of people.

Arkansas State has hired Phoenix Design Works:

                  http://www.nwanews.com/adg/News/210309/

So did William & Mary, who unveiled their new logo last week:

                  http://www.dailypress.com/news/dp-no...3746934.story?

I post those links only to point out that, despite their work on our logo, this is a reputable firm whose work is very much in demand. I have to believe they didn't get the right kind of input from here or they would have come up with a good mascot/logo for us.

As someone who works with logos and graphic designers a lot, I know that creating a lasting and memorable mark for an organization isn't easy, and whether or not the result is satisfactory often has a lot to do with the input from the client. I have no information about how our work with Phoenix went... none... but obviously they wouldn't be in business and in demand if they weren't good at what they do.

Wow, I just voted to see the results on William and Mary's new logo. 85.5% voted "hate it". Personally, It couldn't have taken them long to come up with it. I little boring for my taste.

The client apparently likes it, and the idea here is not necessarily to create a W&M that blows you away, but one that the client thinks will be a quality, lasting mark for their brand.

Are you blown away by the UPS logo? No? It's a brown and gold shield. But it's one of the most recognizable marks in the world. How about the Apple logo? Just an apple with a bite out of it. Again, one of the most widely recognized marks in the world. Logos are symbols of something larger, evoking meaning that is built through the work of the organization. They generally don't contain literal interpretations of everything that the organization does.

People tend to have a hard time with change. No doubt the W&M situation is influenced by the fact that they were forced to change their logo (it used to have Native American feathers on it) rather than choosing to do so.

Proverbial hammer hitting nail on head. I'm not too excited by having to change the logo, but in 10 years many SDSU fans will never know there was ever a different logo than the one they're used to. I think we (all fans) will survive regardless of what is picked. Although, I'm not sure I'd use a basketball game to make the announcement. Too many college kids present who may be in various stages of...well, just various stages. Past experiences have lead me to understand these sorts of fans tend to be vocal and for no real reason aside from feeling a need to be heard.

                          Re: Mascot/logo news?

There has been 8 or nine different rabbit logos over the history of the school and this new version won't be the last. It has evolved over time along with the university.

No matter what the logo is we are still the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State University!

And that is a great thing!

Unfortunately, vocal or active student sections seem to be a thing of the past at Frost arena these days.

Exactly. The whole point of all of this is to be able to tell everybody everywhere that we are the Jackrabbits, one of the most unique mascots in college sports.
