    Re: Selection Show

I don't think of this as a terrible playing bracket... just sucks for the crowds aspect... anybody up on campus hearing of fan busses etc?

the seed doesn't surprise me much, as some big names even with unusual seasons like a Tennessee that is ranked below SDSU but will obviously be seeded higher.... what bother me was where they are playing.... Lubbock is in the middle of nowhere. 5+ hours from Dallas, Albuquerque and Oklahoma City....... And its in Texas which TCU and Baylor both are located.... TCU plays in Ft. Worth which is a lil more then 5 hours according to Google Earth and Baylor which is located in Waco (not Baylor TX) which is 6 and a half hours....

        Let's see ...

SDSU gets publicity we can't buy (ESPN)
The USA Today article did wonders
Sports Illustrated article might be pending

So, we are a #7 seed. First time in the tournament. Four months ago we could have only wished this.

Let's be thankful and go win some ball games. Blogs don't win or lose games. And, in the end, playing the game is the only thing that matters.

TCU's final home game, against tournament bound Utah, drew 2.470 on March 7.

I can't think about Bayor yet...one game at a time.

TCU's website has a story up about our game...not much info on SDSU other than the fact we're playing:

FORT WORTH--TCU was selected for an at-large bid to the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Monday, marking the program's eighth selection in the last nine years. The Lady Frogs were anointed the No. 10 seed in the Raleigh Regional and will face 7th-seeded South Dakota State on Sunday in Lubbock, Texas. The contest, which tips off at 6 p.m., will be televised by ESPN2.

That's what I was thinking that Lubbocks location will not provide a home court advantage for even the Texas teams.

I think Oakland should have received a bid over the third place team of a league in which we defeated the champs. No respect! On a positive note, Lubbock is not a bad city. I spent a year partying with Tech students while I attended Air Force Pilot training. Plus, the temperature is forecast to be in the mid 70's this weekend. Better than the single digits last week in SF.

Looks like ESPN has 6 pm (ESPN2) and 8:30 pm (ESPN2 & ESPNU) start times for the Tuesday games.

Baylor was #14 in the country in attendance last year, but Lubbock seems to be like driving from Sioux Falls to Hot Springs (it's about that far, and it's not interstate all the way).

They should travel well, though they might be surprised how well SDSU travels.

Baylor has been shaky since losing their star Danielle Wilson. However, they've won all but one of the games they've played since then... But 4 of their 6 wins since then involved double digit first and second half deficits, and a fifth game saw them blow a double digit lead in the second half.

They play a VERY short rotation. Only 7 or 8 players since Wilson went out. Even when they've played 8, starters have racked up from 35 to 40 minutes of play.

Basically, it looks like they're set at 4 positions, and they rotate two or three players off the bench to fill in for Danielle Wilson.....

                      Re: Selection Show

For an appetizer, No. 10 TCU squares off against No. 7 South Dakota State, with the Horned Frogs cast in the seemingly awkward role of underdog against America's underdog. South Dakota State's roster is composed entirely of kids from South Dakota-neighboring Minnesota and Iowa and the distant land of Wisconsin. TCU is led by Helena Sverrisdottir, a native of Iceland who ended up in Dallas, in part because the school's summer basketball camp fit her team's schedule when she was growing up.

Appropriately for a game played in a town situated between cattle towns such as Abilene and Amarillo, it could come down to an old-fashioned shootout at 19 paces (plus 9 inches). Both teams shoot the ball often and shoot it well from behind the arc, although South Dakota State's stifling defense may give it the edge.

No. 2 Baylor should get past No. 15 Texas-San Antonio, but even that interlude gives fans a chance to appreciate a small-conference gem in UTSA star Monica Gibbs. The Roadrunners' standout averages 15.8 points, 9.4 rebounds and 6.6 assists.

And for the finale, fans will either see South Dakota State attempt to etch its name in postseason lore (earlier than perhaps it should have needed to) or TCU try to score a third shocker after earlier wins against Maryland and California. All against the backdrop of a masterful coaching performance from Kim Mulkey, who guided Baylor to the Big 12 conference tournament without injured star post Danielle Wilson.

                        From Graham Hays live chat.

Shawn(Las Vegas): Why did South Dakota State get a 7 seed, they are better then that! How far do you think they will go?

Graham Hays: (8:06 PM ET ) That wasn't a surprise necessarily, but I completely agree with you. I thought SDSU deserved a No. 5 seed, might get a No. 6 seed but was probably headed for No. 7. They played as good a nonconference shcedule as they could, but I guess the lack of strength in the Summit ended up costing them. That's all I can figure. It's a tough draw playing potentially two Texas schools in Texas, but it's not impossible. I think the Jackrabbits match up pretty well against TCU, a team that doesn't have a dominant post game and can be handled on the boards. And as good as Baylor looked in the Big 12 without Danielle Wilson (and that was a heck of a coaching job by Mulkey), the Bears aren't the worst draw SDSU could get as a No. 7. They definitely still have at least a shot at playing into the second week.

                          Continuation:

                          5. What's the healthy alternative to chalk?

Let's face it: Chalk is addictive stuff, and I'm as hooked on the bracket juice as anyone.

                          But there are alternatives.

For purposes of reaching the Final Four in St. Louis, we'll call "chalk" any team on the top three seed lines. And with those 12 teams out of the mix, two sleepers stand out. One is South Dakota State, which has already been discussed above. But it's not because the Jackrabbits are a neat story that they deserved a better seed than the No. 7 they were allotted; it's because there aren't 24 better teams in the country.

                            More Graham praises:

Maryland: The Terrapins get ACC territory all to themselves in College Park and Raleigh, with the rest of the conference shipped elsewhere. Not that familiarity helps slow down the ACC champs -- people have been trying unsuccessfully to slow Kristi Toliver and Marissa Coleman for four years. The top half of the bracket is loaded with teams that rely on execution, but few that can stick one-on-one with either Toliver and Coleman outside or Lynetta Kizer and Demauria Liles inside. That's less the case in a potential regional final against Baylor, Louisville or even South Dakota State, but whether it's the Lady Bears without Danielle Wilson, the Cardinals' short bench or the Jackrabbits in new surroundings, there are reasons to think Maryland will survive.

At least no team that we beat this year is seeded higher than us. For what that is worth. I know one thing, if I hear one more thing about UConn tonight I will throw up.
