Anyways, IDK if this deserves it's own thread, but I thought this was pretty cool.

To be honest, I never even heard of Deadspin until tonight. Which means one of two things...

      1) I'm hopelessly behind the times.

      -or-

      2) Deadspin isn't as big a blog as they make themselves out to be.

Personally, I think it's a little bit of both! LOL

Just two quick things - Deadspin IS the hippest and most-read sports blog on the 'net, hands down. Has been for the better part of five years now or so.

Also, the blogger Dashiell Bennett is a long-time friend of mine.

Filbert, you need to eliminate this thread. Let me ask you this. You are Jenn's uncle and you happen across this thread and read the comments. How do you feel? You of all people must realize this is a real possibility.

These people are sick. Simply put.

I think it,s already been devisive, disruptive to the members of this board .Some are very upset with this link....I probably won't read it because I don't particularly enjoy reading about people trashing a good and honest person.....if someone goes to this site all the time , they must have a clue what kind of people comment on this site....i never heard of it before, but i think i know it's not a site I would go to ,that's just me.

              Re: Deadspin - JackRabbits!

I can't honestly believe that anybody here cares what a bunch of pathetic mouth-breathers who comment on a blog think about anything. To me the post on Deadspin was significant because it was viewed by tens of thousands of people, many of whom no doubt clicked through to the USA Today story to read it. Of those many thousands, a handful (by my count maybe a dozen really stupid idiots) returned and tried to one-up each other with their insensitive comments.

I don't even read comments on blogs, and as a journalism professor, I'm guessing that I read more blogs than anybody on sdsufans.com.

Anybody here who doesn't wish to read Deadspin has the option not to. The popular rejoinder to that here seems to be: But what if the Warkenthien family sees those comments?

Isn't that kind of patronizing? The message of that story was that they're a remarkably smart, strong and resilient group of people. I suspect Filbert's warning would be enough to keep them away from the Deadspin comments. More generally, I reject the idea that we have to protect the Warkenthiens from anything. They've proven how strong they are. They've weathered a lot tougher stuff than the insensitive statements of some dopey kid posting comments on a blog.

              Flame away.

                Re: Deadspin - JackRabbits!

What if this Deadspin was about a USD women's basketball player and she was trashed like Jenn is being trashed? Would Jack Observer be chuckling like he was when he started this thread? Fair questions to ask. BTW, there have been a number of USD women's players who have been a class act on and off the court. I would regret to see any fine article written about them being put on a "Deadspin" blog which appears to attract only immature classeless people.

The entire crux of my argument is that Deadspin doesn't just attract immature people. It has literally a mass audience, with tens of millions of page views a week. Most of the readers are, like me, read it because it links to stories we are interested in, but would otherwise never find (the Internet is a big place). There are some idiots who visit there and, obviously, think they're really funny with their insensitive posts. That doesn't negate the value of having positive SDSU news posted on a site that leads to thousands of views of that material by regular people who read the blog, but not the comments.

In that, it's really no different from any other popular blog or media site. For every 100,000 readers, there are going to be some insane cranks to are very outspoken. The most popular blogs attract lots of readers, and a handful of nuts.

Thanks I might be jumping to conclusions here. I seen too much of this rivalry stuff and kind of paranoid at times. Oh well!!! Bigger fish to fry.

Matt Zimmer posted his thoughts about Deadspin in his daily blog and I think he provides a good perspective on the issue.

Read Matt Zimmer's blog today. He did the exact same thing. He read it, got excited to see that SDSU was on Deadspin, and sent it to Terry. Only after Terry noticed the comments did Zimmer learn of it. You can't blame RO for that same mistake. He may like to stir the pot once in awhile, but he isn't trying to piss people off with stuff like that.

EDIT: EQGuy's post has the link.

Second, Deadspin is a Gawker Media blog and those ARE some of the most frequently read blogs out there. Third, Gawker blogs are well known for their snarky users who "try" (and often fail) to be funny and irreverent (better examples are gizmodo.com, a gadget blog, and lifehacker.com, a personal productivity blog which I read every day).

Granted, many of the comments on the Deadspin story are stupid and mean. Gawker and its readers put that same kind of spin on everything. Deadspin may not be our cup of tea, but it does reach a lot of people, and many of the readers who don't comment are no doubt just as disgusted by some of those comments as we are. Many will just read the story on Deadspin and follow the link to USA Today.

I certainly don't blame RO for what those obnoxious commenters said. He was just bringing this coverage, in a very popular blog, to our attention.
Ditto to JimmyJack's comment. Can't hold Rabbitobserver responsible for the comments about that article. I for one am glad to see the link, as I find it interesting to see what different media markets picked up the story.
