  • Re: Illinois State - WNIT

Here's the article from the paper in Normal, Illinois.

"We certainly had our breakdowns on both ends of the court," ISU coach Robin Pingeton said. "Megan Vogel may be the best player we've seen all year. What a player she is. She's a difference maker."

Pingeton said the Jackrabbits, who advance to the round of 16 to face either Iona or Indiana(who play Monday), might be the best team ISU has faced this season.

"When you look at their schedule and who they've played, they've proven they could play at the NCAA level," she said. "They really made it hard for us to score, and they made it hard for us to make some play calls with how loud it got in here."

There's a nice line for the Jackrabbit fans.

This Illinois State team was really good. That #21, Keynatta Shelton (I hope I spelled that right??), was more athletic than any of our girls by far. She's only a FROSH! I made a comment to my friend about how #15 was playing well and that I figured that she was a senior. And she was. Also, I was also a little disappointed with #10 (being MVC player of the year) until I found out she was only a sophmore as well. She played well but I was expecting better. My point is that seniors really do the difference and luckily we have a special one. But with #21 and #10 they will be really good for the next couple of years for sure.
#21, Shelton had the baseline move down, very athletic. I guess #15 did nothing but practice 3's before the game, luckily the bird's went cold out there later on.

Jacks need to make the FT's to go deep in the tourney.

#15 Megan McCracken transferred from another ISU, Iowa State, that is known for launching the 3 very well.  I follow Iowa State as well and I can see that she learned well what Bill Fennelly taught her in her time with the Cyclones

You gotta want to be there, don't you? Where are the DI naysayers now? Indiana should be coming to Frost arena to play a post-season basketball game. Thats a lot better than Metro or Ft. Hayes St. I don't think you can argue that.

I know there was 5719 in attendance last night, but to those who left early you might have missed out on a few classy moments last night in the 'postgame' at Frost Arena.

When the post game interviews were complete on the video boards, fans who hung around applauded the ISU players, and later coaches once they finished their comments...then when ISU players came from the locker room to join their fans in the southwest corner of the arena, the fans waiting for more video, stood and cheered for the visitors as they crossed our court to leave. Being a Jacks fan, that moment gave me a chill...Congrats to Jacks fans for recognizing a hard fought victory, and paying respect to a great team/program.

There was also a considerable amount of cheering when AJ and team, plus WNIT-guy annouced the next home game at Frost too, but those moments when SDSU fans recognized the Redbird contingent stuck with me all day today.

Yes it was an emotional night, great game, but that was a truly special event for collegiate athletics last night...regardles of sport and gender.

I will die being proud to be a JACKS FAN....

I think those cheers orginated from the particular region I was sitting in after the game. It was really classy how everyone there joined in. The Redbirds are a good team. Look forward to many more games against them in the future.

BROOKINGS - So much for what game film seemed to indicate. For that matter, so much for the scouting report of the naked eye.

The interior advantage that Illinois State believed it had against South Dakota State did not pan out Saturday night. The Redbirds' center tandem of 6-foot-5 Nicolle Lewis and 6-2 widebody Lashawn Johnson was limited to eight points and nine rebounds in the 61-48 loss to the Jackrabbits in the second round of the WNIT, more than 10 points and three boards below its season average...

By the way, that was an incredible atmosphere in Frost Saturday night. I haven't been to a game there with that many people since State-U when I was an undergrad. Under three minutes, when it started looking like we had it won, it got deafening in there. My ears actually started to hurt. I also liked the fact that the entire general admission section behind the students had to stand for the whole game. I was back there and did not mind one bit. It would be great if we got the same kind of crowd for the next game, but being on a weeknight, I'm not sure that will happen.
