Comment from the Red Cloud head coach after the game:
""All our scouting reports said she was the real deal - and she is," he said. "She is so strong. We wanted to press more, but I was a little hesitant, because if she got through, she was gone. We made some adjustments and tried to shadow her, but then we just got tired out.""

Sounds like another of AJ's type of recruits. All around player who is strong and athletic.

2009 post recruit Jennifer Sunnaborg lead her team into the Minnesota state tourney last night with a victory over previously undefeated Centennial.
Osseo stuns No. 1, unbeaten Centennial

      Last update: March 7, 2008 - 6:52 AM

Osseo's clutch free-throw shooting ensured that nobody's perfect.

Losers of both of their regular-season meetings against previously undefeated Centennial, the Orioles girls' basketball team earned a trip to state with a stunning 62-56 victory Thursday in the Class 4A, Section 5 championship game at Anoka High School.
Jennie Sunnarborg and Amy Hildebrand hit all four of their combined free-throw attempts with less than 30 seconds remaining, maintaining the lead as Osseo bent late in the second half but never broke.
Osseo led 28-20 at halftime and saw its lead grow to as many as 12 points. Led by Megan Nipe's 29 points, the No. 1-ranked Cougars (27-1) cut Osseo's lead to 57-56 with 1 minute to play. But Nipe's two free throws were the Cougars' final points.
Sunnarborg led the Orioles (24-5) with 22 points, including 4-for-6 free-throw shooting in the second half.
"We felt the first two times we played them were not our best games," Hildebrand said. "We knew we couldn't come in tonight like we were already defeated."
Centennial coach Jill Becken was left to console a team that has lost a combined four games the past two seasons yet has missed out on state twice.
"I felt early on we were pressing and forcing things," she said. "It's tough because we weren't ready in any way, shape or form to be done tonight."
Osseo had lost both games during the regular season to Centennial, Jennifer was missing for one of those games. To knock off the No. 1 team in the state is huge step for Osseo as they advance to the state tourney.

        Re: 2009 Recruit

Terry has his take on our recruits as well:

So I finally have a night off and how do I spend it? Watching high school girls basketball games on public television to scout some future SDSU players.

Please don't tell Zimmer about my complete lack of a social life.

To sum it up, the Jacks are doing well in the home state. Watertown junior guard Tara Heiser scored 23 points - more than half her team's total - in a Class AA quarterfinal win against Brookings (which got a double-double from Jacks volleyball recruit Ellyce Youngren). Heiser completely controlled the game on both ends of the floor. She was a extremely impressive.

In the nightcap, Pierre junior guard Steph Paluch scored 8 points with 6 rips and 3 assists. She struggled from the field, but did not let that affect her confidence. Pierre junior center Katie Lingle put up 8 points and 8 boards despite getting into foul trouble. She moves very well for a true back-to-the-basket post.

I watched VJ play last night and I was very impressed. Some of the Red Cloud youth fans were calling her "Mad Handlez".

              Re: 2009 Recruit

Here's the Argus story on West Central's game last night....looks like VJ had a great night. I especially like the 5 steals part.

......To say the Trojans dominated in the first half is a gross understatement. They were mostly unstoppable, scoring from inside, outside, beyond the arc and at the free-throw line. They converted 13 Sioux Valley turnovers into 15 points and they tallied eight points on second-chance shots.

The catalyst for all that scoring,of course, came from another top-notch defensive effort.

For the game, the Trojans had seven steals, most of which turned into buckets at the other end. Vanessa Johnson, the Trojans' big gun, had five of those steals and poured in 28 points, going 8-for-13 from the field, 5-for-7 beyond the arc and 7-for-8 from the line.

She also had a game-high eight rebounds........

                Re: 2009 Recruit

What a class act VJ is. A Red Cloud player told me VJ went up to them in the motel they were staying at and congratulated them on a good season. Looks like not only is SDSU getting an outstanding player, but a good person as well. Perfect timing for the Jacks to get a player with her abilities during their first year eligible for the NCAA tourney.

She looks like a true center, the long arms, long legs always moving around downlow, plus she has a decent looking outside shot. I can get use to seeing her in the yellow and blue. I think we'll have a great battle for starting center next year.

Just watching those clips of her, she looks like she could make an immediate impact for the girls. Maria and Jenn are dominate forces already and just imagine her in the mix as well. Having a dominate scoring post coming off the bench is really good to have.

I would not count on that. I got an opportunity to see Sunnarborg play against Chaska this afternoon. She finished with just 4 points and missed some key free throws that could have made a difference. I'm sure this was not one of her better games and they did double down on her constantly, however she was very passive and did not seem very assertive in getting the ball in the paint. She is very long and athletic and I'm sure will improve with Jacks coaching. The best player on the floor was 5'8 guard Courtney Boylan of Chaska who was first team all-metro had 25 points and is heading to Michigan next year. I would have loved to see her in a Jacks uniform. I see Sunnargard very similiar to Maria and Jenn, but it will take some time. Not sure why this was listed under 09 as she is a 08 recruit.
