    Re: Natalie Carda

my last post on the topic.. I know that sometimes threads on transfers can get emotional and out of hand. but I have a serious question...Would Natalie be competing against Maria Boever from Worthington next year for PT? I have heard she is incredible and some have said she is the #1 recruit in Minnesota.

I don't know exact numbers but probably as many players transfer between D1 schools as from D1 to D2.  Yes, many are from larger to smaller D1 schools and many just want back closer to home.  Some end up not liking the program and/or there has been a coaching change.

        Re: Natalie Carda

I would agree that there seems to be more and more transferring from D1 school to D1 school now than in years past. If SDSU gets to the point of a strong mid- major there is no doubt we will see some of this from teams in the high major conferences. One thing that leads to this is kids not redshirting out of high school. If they don't redshirt, they can use that year as their "penalty" year when they transfer. Then they still have 4 years of eligibilty and can finish in 5 years as many athletes do.

          Re: Natalie Carda

If Natalie is leaving I'm sure the decision was a tough one for her to make. Leaving a BB program with all the upside of SDSU for the program at USD makes it obvious that being part of a successful program was less of a factor than others. As it was for Koupal. I will agree that the "better educational opportunity" excuse is a bogus one. However, there are many other legitimate potential factors.

We can speculate about what the other factors were/are but it really doesn't matter. Natalie can make whatever choice she wants. I have no concerns about Coach Johnston, his assistance, or the condition of the SDSU women's basketball program. Obviously, just not the right fit for this particular player.

Not being critical only making a point. Seems bigtime DI athleticsand the travel that goes with it, plus the demands of a university education were just too much for her. I understand completely and would struggle if with the decision if placed in her shoes. After all, it is the education obtained in college that determines future success in the vast majority of college athletes. Best of luck to Natalie and thanks for a great year.

              Can we fill her scholarhip?

I would assume there is no reason why we couldn't fill her scholarship, though i wonder if the coaches would think about saving it for next year to try to even out the classes a little bit. We are already bringing in a lot of freshman next fall and we only have one senior graduating next year (Vogel, right?). That way we would have our scholarships spread out a little more evenly. :-/ I would think we have Meckley's scholarship to give out as well, unless she is returning to the team next year.

I would think that most of quality athletes are probably locked up right now, unless there is a couple of sleepers out there it would be best to wait till next year. I'm not a big fan of juco players either they're to hit and miss as far as quality.

                    Re: Natalie Carda

Natalie has made her choice and I thank her for her fine efforts that she contributed to the SDSU program. I think the travel involved in the transitition period has to be a challenge in time management. Its not unreasonable to think that this might have figured into Meackly's situtation too.

I would have been more disappointed with Oiestad transfering to St Cloud as a for instance or even the young lady from WIllow Lake leaving. Both had made an impact this past season and we hope they complete their eligibilty and get their degrees at SDSU.

As Texas Jack, mentioned, the incoming freshman and their impact on her future playing time could have been a factor too. Some may not be honored to sit on the bench when they could play every game somewhere else.

Its hard to say. I wish Natilie the best at USD hope she will obtain the education needed for life. I think it will be neat to be able to show her grandchildren photos of her basketball career.

Did you ever wonder why Koupal left? NCC Freshman of the Year in her first year at State? Ask Nancy Nieber sometime. Ask her about the major she told Koupal she could get at SDSU. In Koupal's case academics played a big role. And honesty.

Water under the bridge. National championship banner in the rafters. Speculation not necessary. Your implications are tough to support in this forum.

In addition, I hope your not implying A.J. lied to Carda. If so, take that up with him.

I have a feeling this is predominatley about the amount of time required of the student athletes in terms of traveling etc. Natalie will find how good she had it in terms of coaching and fan support at SDSU vs USd. I have never been impressed with Chad Lavin.

AJ's got the machine rolling anyway. Natalie is doing what's best for her. AJ will find a suitable replacement and not lose a step (not meant to be a shot at Natalie, just confidence in AJ). Best of luck to Natalie and the USD WBB team.

Also, IMO and that of others I talked to during the title run, Koupal would not have made SDSU any better. Her leaving allowed the "team" to grow and achieve success.

Remember when Mo Vaughan left the Red Sox because they were having him followed? Yeah, I don't really care about that either. Koupal's departure was only magnified because she was such a good athlete. However, even the GREAT USD loses athletes to transfers and quitting every year. I know that sounds blasphemis, but it's true. Mandy went on to player of the year, SDSU went on to National Champs. I think it's safe to say neither was any worse for wear after the transfer. Classy post, though.
