Re: GDT: SDSU Jackrabbits @ WIU Leathernecks

I remember the only time the Jacks didn't go to the NCAA tourney and USD went instead,USD just barely beat a team on a last second shot by Rachel Contrerras (sp?),they needed a two to tie,a three to win,she hit a three and left about 3 seconds on the game clock,it was a high scoring shoot out, don't quote me,but it may have been w. Ill they were playing. They were fortunate enough to make the Championship game. They turned that good fortune into a tough gritty game the Jacks weren't prepared for,I think it was just a carry over from the game before in intensity for the Yotes. In stark contrast, the Jacks had a much easier route to the Championship game, and started out way too lackadaisical, and lost as a result.

I also remember we couldn't seem to be able to beat ORU (Luper and Bigham era) one yr,I think we may have also lost both conference games during the regular season to them.We were the #2 seed that year,so we were in opposite brackets with them.We made the championship game ,they didn't.They ran into a red hot Oakland team that defeated them in the semi's.We then beat Oakland in the Championship game.

My point is,a lot of things can happen in a tournament setting,a lot of it unexpected, so it may be premature to be selecting a sure fire Champion,at best USD could be considered as the favorites, based on the season's results. On paper, they should probably win it,but what's on paper doesn't always translate to reality. We'll see in a week, which team wants it the most and is willing to fight tooth and nail for it.

Whoever the Conference Tournament champion ends up being,I'll be rooting for them to do some damage in the NCAA Tournament this year, for the sake of the Conference, and the good it will do for the future of the Summit League.

seems to me, that Frost loss to USD took quite a bit of starch out of the Jacks. there were a couple of nice games after that, but, even a few of the lopsided wins had stretches where the Jacks were just "outta whack". rather "unJack-like". then another hit at USD. gets in your head. will be a lot to analyze in that first game----even if they do win, it will be how they played. will they look more like the early season jacks, or, late season jacks?

This team just isn't playing well right now and even if they play well USD is better and IUPUI is at least as good. This year it's USD's championship to lose. SDSU has been in this position plenty of times in the past and has won the tourney. I like the Jackrabbit's chances to win each day but anyone who doesn't admit that USD is the prohibitive favorite to win isn't paying attention.

I'm with you on this. We barely lost those two games to USD, but either that or the mounting effects of injuries seem to have taken a toll. The team we've seen the past few weeks is a shadow of the one that was on the court in late November. Ask yourself this: how ugly would games against Notre Dame, Maryland and DePaul be if they were played this week?

A tournament championship is still a possibility, but my expectations have gone down a long way after the IUPUI and WIU games. Miller and Young, in particular, have to show up with a big chip on their shoulders in Sioux Falls. If those two step up and contribute 25+ ppg (combined), we can absolutely win. If not, we move on to talking about the WNIT and next year.

It's tough to figure out this team. It's definitely a Jekyll-Hyde type situation. They can go from looking like world-beaters one quarter to not able to throw it in the ocean when they're standing on the beach in the next. Not sure if it's substitution patterns or something else that causes this, but it seems to be like turning a light switch off and on. There doesn't seem to be a reliable scorer on the second unit. You can't do it at this point of the season, but I've wondered how it would work to start Gabby and bring Kerri off the bench, where she thrived as a freshman.

I think our lack of depth this year, especially on the offensive side, is hurting us. We pretty much have a 8 player rotation and the three that are coming off the bench are not offensive threats. Really missing Chynna Stevens at the 3 & 4 position.

We've never failed to make it to the Championship game, hope that streak continues. Then it comes down to one game, winner takes all.

We lost in the semifinals to USD 2 years ago. We didn't win a game at that SL tournament due to having a bye.

I agree though that I think our depth is a huge problem. USD seems to get huge production from their bench. I believe in the USD-SDSU game, Williams played 12 different players in the first half.

We're lucky to get 10 points from the bench it seems and when Miller and Young struggle, our offense is really bad with not much bench help.

I really hope the SDSU players and coaches don't read this fan chat because it surely doesn't reflect ALL of the amazing achievements of this season and so many past seasons. So what if USD has the edge right now, doesn't that make upcoming games even that much more fun to think about? SDSU deserves to find a way to post season no matter what and I am 100% certain they will.

I've had some good laughs on this board, but this is the funniest post yet. If coaches and players don't have the mental toughness to overcome a critical post on a fan forum, than God help us all!

Are you guys saying we regressed playing Summit competition? I've said that all along, it doesn't help playing a slowed down uglier ,hacking, cheap fouls called, playground game for 16 games in a row and then have to face finely honed teams that have to play at a much higher level, or face finishjng the season at the bottom in their p-5 conferences. Of course, the way you guys have gushed over USD, I'm sure they'll probably beat a Maryland team, and finish much closer than 11 points to Notre Dame, they'll probably beat them too. They could beat DePaul by 15-20. But hey, they can't beat an unranked Washington team on their home court, lost to Kansas State(any name recognition school, they seem to lose). Did they lose to the University of Northern Iowa? I think they did. Same as last year they were supposed to be so good, they lost to a Northern Colorado team we easily handled. I think I'll refrain from gushing over USD until they actually beat some really good teams, like we do every year. Why some people are so easily impressed with USD, and overlook what we've done this year, really astonishes me, I'm kind of flabbergasted at it all. Good thing they aren't really bad, like the Bison fans are unfortunately having to endure this year.

AJ is probably very busy putting his youngsters to bed. This fan chat has to be the last thing on his mind.

I don't think anyone is gushing over USD. They don't hand out NCAA invites based on how or who teams play in November and December. And realistically looking at things, it's hard not to say that USD is playing better going into March. They beat us in our house and they beat us in their house .They have won 14 in a row and 24 out of their last 26. Am I writing off the Jacks chances of winning ? Not at all, but I can't say that I am supremely confident that they will get it done either.

I don't disagree that we have played and beaten better teams than USD. But the point of all of this is to be playing your best ball when it matters, and that is now. All that USD has done is win 15 in a row, including beating us twice. You.can honestly say right now that we would be favored over them? Now I'm certainly not handing them the title, nor do I think our girls will. USD did this to us two years ago, so it can happen. We need to play much better basketball than we have over the last three to make that happen.
