Re: GDT: SDSU Jackrabbits @ WIU Leathernecks
I remember the only time the Jacks didn't go to the NCAA tourney and USD went instead,USD just barely beat a team on a last second shot by Rachel Contrerras (sp?),they needed a two to tie,a three to win,she hit a three and left about 3 seconds on the game clock,it was a high scoring shoot out, don't quote me,but it may have been w. Ill they were playing. They were fortunate enough to make the Championship game. They turned that good fortune into a tough gritty game the Jacks weren't prepared for,I think it was just a carry over from the game before in intensity for the Yotes. In stark contrast, the Jacks had a much easier route to the Championship game, and started out way too lackadaisical, and lost as a result.
I also remember we couldn't seem to be able to beat ORU (Luper and Bigham era) one yr,I think we may have also lost both conference games during the regular season to them.We were the #2 seed that year,so we were in opposite brackets with them.We made the championship game ,they didn't.They ran into a red hot Oakland team that defeated them in the semi's.We then beat Oakland in the Championship game.
My point is,a lot of things can happen in a tournament setting,a lot of it unexpected, so it may be premature to be selecting a sure fire Champion,at best USD could be considered as the favorites, based on the season's results. On paper, they should probably win it,but what's on paper doesn't always translate to reality. We'll see in a week, which team wants it the most and is willing to fight tooth and nail for it.
Whoever the Conference Tournament champion ends up being,I'll be rooting for them to do some damage in the NCAA Tournament this year, for the sake of the Conference, and the good it will do for the future of the Summit League.
