Re: GDT:SDSU Jackrabbits vs IUPUI Jaguars

Ober was a missed player tonight. However, Mieras did a solid job rebounding. No one gets a weak rebound when she is close. The problem Jessica had tonight was throwing away 2 great rebounds as she was a bit excited and threw the ball ahead of teammates who were not ready for her bullet passes. She had a couple of good flashes in the paint for offense as well. This game gave her some tough experience tonight. It will be a benefit later in the season for the Jackrabbits. Flaata also gave a few solid minutes during her time. The zone seemed to be the best answer to Rogers who could take any player one on one. It gave a few looks for the freshman point guard Hall who was 4-10 from the arc. There was enough ugly for this game, but the same team that squeaked out a 2OT against UNI kept in the game for this one as well. The Jackrabbits lost 2 3 pt shots to moving screens tonight which would have been enough margin to win the game in regulation. 21 turnovers is not a good habit to have. The Jackrabbits are tied for first with USD and ORU. If they win at home Saturday, it would be a chance to move ORU down next week.

The lack of depth at that position is certainly a weakness this year. The fact that AJ pulled both centers late in the game says a lot. Hope for a quick return by Ober or we could easily end up with an "unexpected" loss or two.
We should give Ober the time to fully heal her injury, returning her too early risks greater damage if her finger is re-injured ,and therefore a longer recovery time without her services.I guess that goes without saying.Better to have her not being able to play for a home game rather than on the road also. We've been very fortunate to dodge the injury bug so far this year.

Midco Sports Network was shooting highlights of the game, so for those who missed it, check out Madison Guebert's game-winning shot, as well as IUPUI's final possession here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICk_luGuMG0

We also lost a 2 pt shot to a foul away from the basketball too( foul called on them, got ball back and missed the next shot),so that makes 8 pts we lost to foul calls.I don't know how we could be that unfortunate enough to lose that many points to foul calls, but we were.

The Jacks were also benefactors on some calls. The late charge that Ellie drew on the baseline was absolutely horrid. It goes both ways...most of the time.

Well, even if it wasn't pretty.

You know what to call an UGLY win? A win.

Jackrabbits have had this issue in the past...where they struggle for a bit in the middle of the season. They usually come out of it stronger on the other side.

Just hope that is sooner rather than later.

Re: GDT:SDSU Jackrabbits vs IUPUI Jaguars

Our scoring issues to me really seem to be a product of a lack of productivity coming off the bench. In conference play our bench is currently giving us around 12 points a game, which is down from 16 from last year. You look at the difference in total points between us and USD (the top scoring team in the league) and they are receiving 24 points per game from their bench.

Here are the conference shooting stats from our main bench players:

                  Gabby Boever- .324
                  Chloe Cornemann- .409
                  Alexis Alexander- .273
                  Sydney Palmer- .200

So really, looking at percentages the "shooting funk" that we have been in lately really revolves around the bench players because all starters except for Macy and Kerri are shooting much better now than earlier in the season. I would like to see Chloe look for her shot more and be more aggressive on offense. The others need to find their shot and start providing some scoring punch or we are going to be mired in these low scoring "ugly" games that allow the opponent to stick around and be in position to win the game (see USD).

Gee you don't suppose IUPUI defense had anything to do with these shooting averages?

Those shooting averages are for all of conference play, not just last night's game.

The minutes from the bench are likely down this year as well. Kerri came around a bit more last night on her offensive game. There seems to be to many 3 point launches when a few dribbles to the basket and a 10-15 foot shot might work if the space is there. The defenses are playing tight on the perimeter to defend the long shots as USD and IUPUI extended consistently.

This game was not one of the better games we have played for sure. It was hard to watch at times but IMO the last shot to win this game was much bigger than a single win. AJ basically turned to his true freshman guard (who had not had a good shooting nite) and said "I'm giving you the ball go win us the game". To me this shows the trust he has in his players. This situation likely will come up again and this was a big confidence builder for down the road.

Younger players have a much longer learning curve because they don't play very much and don't want to make mistakes,so aren't aggressive enough to accomplish that much.Unless of course your name is Miller or Guebert,Young. It takes a while to learn when you have to be aggressive and when to be more cautious. It's game experience that builds confidence, and helps players learn and grow. It's the starters who control how much playing time the reserves get,if they don't play well themselves and don't build the lead enough for the coaches to give out time to reserves ,they sit or get limited minutes. This year might be particularly tough to acquire playing time,as every game save for the bottom teams have been nip and tuck down to the wire nail biters.

Except for IUPUI (#27) and ORU (#33),the Summit is absolutly horrid defending against the three point shot : (out of 344 ranked)

                              Omaha #205
                              USD #262
                              IPFW #274
                              Denver #295
                              SDSU #307
                              W. Ill #319
                              NDSU #324

Having that bad of a 3 pt shot defending conference, you'd think the three point shooting percent figure would be correspondingly higher also, but just USD(37.9%-#10 ranked)), NDSU(36.6%-#20 ranked), Omaha (35.2%-#41) SDSU(33.9%-#65 ranked), are in the top 100, IUPUI just out at #101.

Disclaimer: Just looked at some other conferences,we are about avg, maybe just a little weak in defense, as a conference, but some individual teams are bad,as is the case in just about all the conferences, now that I've looked a little closer.

I liked on the highlghts reel, when Lexy dribbled in,got cutoff and dribbled back out to start over,Scotty said AJ just shook his head and started walking back to the bench. He should of continued watching because it turned out to be one of the widest open shots we got for the whole game. Lexy dribbled back out ,Mieras set the perfect screen on one of the two defenders she split, and once past these two,it was wide open for a layup.Great play making something work out of nothing to begin with.At 2:11 of the following link

This is two bench players making something work by themselves.Heads up play by both Lexy and Jesica. I feel like Lexy can make things happen, she's a good ball handler, quick enough to make it to the bucket, she just needs a little help to get some room, like the nice screen Jessica set for her. This probably pertains to all our good ball handling guards, set some screens for them to get free, they'll do the rest.
