      Postseason WNIT Tournament Overview
The Women's National Invitation Tournament is an annual tournament involving 64 of the nation's top women's Division I basketball teams. All games, including the semifinals and championship, are hosted by participating schools. Every round is single elimination.

      Format

The Postseason WNIT features 32 first-round games, followed by 16 second-round games, eight third-round games, four quarterfinal games, two semifinal games, and the championship. The championship game is televised live, as is one semifinal game. The event offers 31 automatic berths, one to each established conference, and 33 at-large berths. The WNIT field and bracket is announced late on the evening of the NCAA Tournament selections.

      2012 Postseason WNIT
The 64-team tournament is a single-elimination event with all games played at sites of host schools. The WNIT is committed to offering deserved opportunities to women’s basketball programs, and the 2012 Postseason WNIT features a full 64-team bracket.

The WNIT offers teams an opportunity to get more practices in, to experience playoff-atmosphere games, to play in front of passionate fans, and to use their WNIT success as a springboard to the next season.

Last year, Toledo set school and Mid-American Conference attendance records on the way to capturing the championship title. Toledo's path required them to defeat Delaware, Auburn, Alabama, Syracuse, and Charlotte, before downing USC 76-68 in the finale. In 2010, Cal defeated Miami in a game showcasing some of the top young players in the country. In 2009, Kansas hosted South Florida in the championship, and the teams played in front of 16,113 fans, which set a women's college basketball record in both Big 12 Conference and University of Kansas history.

      2012 Dates
The 64-team field will be announced late Monday evening, March 12, 2012. The first round will kick off Wednesday, March 14, with the event culminating on Saturday, March 31 with the championship.
      Selection – Monday, March 12.
      Round 1 – March 14-16.
      Round 2 – March 17-19.
      Round 3 – March 21-23.
      Round 4 – March 24-26.
      Semifinals – March 28-29.
      Championship – Saturday, March 31.

      Selection and Bracketing Process
The WNIT committee uses three stages in this order to implement the final bracket: 1) Select teams; 2) Group teams according to team strength; and 3) Bracket the selected teams.

      Selection Procedures/Selection Day
The WNIT committee will choose 64 teams for its Postseason WNIT. The field will consist of 31 automatic berths – one from each established conference – and 33 at-large teams. The intent of the WNIT Selection Committee is to select the 33 best available at-large teams in the nation, regardless of conference or geographical location.
The field will be announced late Monday, March 12, 2012. All information will be disseminated via the website at www.womensnit.com that night, a few hours after the NCAA bracket is announced.
      Selecting Teams: Automatic Berths
Thirty-one (31) spots in the Postseason WNIT will be filled automatically by the best team available in each of the nation’s 31 established conferences, after the NCAA Tournament committee makes its picks.
A team that is offered an automatic berth by the WNIT shall be the team that is a.) the highest-finishing team in its conference’s regular-season standings, and b.) is then not selected for the NCAA Tournament. It does not matter what the team’s overall record is. For the automatic qualifying berth, the WNIT believes that a team’s conference record is a more fair comparison among teams within their own conference, and that the conference record should pre-empt overall records among teams from the same conference. The automatic qualifying team is rewarded with the AQ spot for its in-conference play.
Should a conference’s automatic qualifier team decline the WNIT invitation, then the conference forfeits its AQ spot and that berth goes into the at-large pool.
In the event of a tie among teams under consideration for the WNIT automatic berth, the WNIT will abide by conference bylaws that have been set up specifically to address a tiebreaking situation in that specific conference.
In the event of a tie among teams with identical conference records and there are no specific bylaws to address it, the WNIT will recognize the conference tiebreaker, and select the team with the best seed for its conference tournament.
Multiple-division conferences receive one WNIT automatic berth. The qualifying process is the same as that for single-division conferences. However, if a conference designates more than one top seed (i.e. a No. 1 seed for each division), then the conference office shall determine, before its conference tournament begins, a seeding order for WNIT purposes.

      THERE ARE 31 AUTO BIDS

You have said he is your cousin so I am sure you are not biased in making that remark. Joe got squeezed out of WNAX after Norm Hilson passed on suddenly, when Fred said no to his participation in Jack events. Joe seems to like that south institution a little too much since he is an alum. He is a homer for USD, but not for SDSU. So you are partially correct.

I remember listening to him in the first women's exhibition game and he was very nervous and was not keeping up with the game well. However, from then and now he is day and night. I know that Tyler mentors him and is helping him along in his first year calling the Jacks. At least he doesn't say "ding! ding! ding!" and is professional.
Google JJ Hartigan and you get everything but his bio. Most of the time, he does do a good job and I was unware this was his first year. Apparently he is not part of the staff at WNAX this year and has a full time job somewhere else. No I did not hear any ding! ding! last night. I will give him credit for that, and he does have a good radio voice, and with Tyler's mentoring, he will come around.

I would be embarrassed if SDSU hired an announcer even half as bad as that guy. He was consistently wrong on communicating what was going on in the game, questioned the ref calls every time they went against USD even when the call was blatantly obvious, freaked out over minor happenings in the game, and had the most irritating catch phrase for every USD three pointer (DING! DING! DING! DING!).

...and yes, I know I could have turned the volume off, but I generally like sound to go along with the visual of the game.
Isn't it Warren Swain? He is on the Sports Buffet 99.1 2 pm local show in Sioux Falls....I thought he did the USD MBB, but he is awful on the Sports Buffet as well.

In this case, you guys are preaching to the choir. You would be hard pressed to find many USD fans that are happy with the Coyote radio broadcasts. I know I personally can't get a feel for what is happening as both Swain and Roste struggle with nuances of in-game descriptions. "Holy Help Me Hannah" is another head scratcher.

I occasionally get to listen to Van Goor doing MMC games on my way home from work on Wednesdays. He will undoubtably be an upgrade.

Just got 4 valentines via intraclinic mail. They are a red circle that say I "heart" U. Thanks a lot Jackrabbits. I haven't figured out how to post picture to this forum but would do so if someone educates me. What a miserable couple of games.

well, as far as your comment "he will come around", i hope you are right. i am sure he loves what he is doing, or, he wouldn't have chose that profession. as far as "a good job"---we can agree to disagree.

No loss is a good loss, but,i think the team can address some weaknesses and come out of this a much stonger team, come tournament time, when it all counts. That's my wish.
