Her season-low was against IUPUI. She had six versus the Jaguars. Nine for Luper tonight.

Nice win and a nice lead in the standings. The regular-season and Tournament championships are definitely SDSU's to lose now.

What a year to be an SDSU fan. There are a lot of Summit schools that would love to get one basketball team in the top-2 and both of ours are virtually locked in already.

If anyone finds a video of Gabby's lob pass 3 pointer...please post it.

I was at the game. My observations:

As I noted earlier, I think ORU is very quick. They were constantly reaching in and slapping at the ball -- I don't want to suggest they were fouling: they were working hard to create turnovers, interrupt passes etc. and it was working in the first half. We made lots of turnovers -- passes we take for granted with other teams just plain didn't work against ORU. We missed at least 5 layups -- I know our shooting percentage was very high but if we made some shots right under the basket, we would have had a little cushion in the first half.

No question those are the top two teams in the league this year. We made great adjustments in the second half. We recognized that our passes better be fast and crisp or the turnovers would cost us the game. Eide and others did a great job covering Luper. Our defense overall was very good. Our depth started making a difference in the second half.

Playing against ORU tonight was a great tuneup for games coming up, at UMKC on Saturday and at USD Monday. USD has earned the #3 spot in the league and they'll be very tough in the dome.

Probably the turning point of the 2nd half...Bigham had just cut it to 4 before Gabby's 'shot' went in.

Was luper just forcing shots. It didn't seem like she had taken that many listening. Glad we got luper only scoring 9 and not 41. I wonder what the rebounding total was from half to half. First half felt like we missed a lot on defense and second half sounded like when we got them they were reaching or fouling on a lot that we got.

                My observations:

The Jacks played against the zone better in the second half. Much better. I don't know if it was adjustments at the half or having the coaching staff within earshot, but I saw the Jacks play more disciplined 2 - 3 (?) transitioning to 1 - 3 - 1 against the 3 - 2 zone in the second half, which made passing easier. I don't recall the Jacks cutting much in the second half, but I don't think that's a good idea against ORU. ORU seems good enough in that trapping zone to require SDSU to change how they play their half court sets.

They did that in the second half and they were able to lever ORU into bad situations.

This is how they setup ORU (at least what I saw from high up behind the Jacks' bench):

They'd start with three players between the half court line and the three point line, all three players about 5-7 feet behind the 3 point line. If they were able to lure a 4th ORU player out of the zone on the trap, they'd quickly pass the ball in for a layup to one of the two Jacks playing in the post. (what I LOVED about this set: it *seemed* as though ORU had SDSU where they wanted them; tied up a long way from the basket, but in reality their defense was stretched thin, and if the Jacks could break the trap, they could score easily, very very easily)

When they couldn't draw an ORU defender out of position on this, they'd transition into a 1 - 3 - 1, with the PG at the top of the key, usually drawing a trap, and the perimeter players close by the three point line and either Eide or Dietel in the high post.

The PG (I think Boever learned a lot about running the point tonight) would have to pass through the trap to one of the wing players. The wing player, if she got rid of it fast enough, got it to Sunny/Lingle/Dietel, all of whom had their way with ORU from the low post. If she didn't, they were at a pretty high risk of turning it over or getting a lousy shot.

Until ORU shifted the 3 man leg of the 3-2 defense closer to the baseline. That opened up the perimeter and the Jacks just tore up ORU toward the end of the game.

Of course fatigue was also a factor for ORU. I can't believe Fink played Bigham 33 minutes. That was just cruel.

Bottom line, IMO: The Jacks are a much deeper team than ORU, and when they played their strengths against ORU's it was no contest. Basically, Luper (and Bigham when she's having a good game--I can almost guarantee she won't have one on Saturday), can force SDSU to alter how they play. But once SDSU has adapted, they should be able to easily handle ORU.

                  Re: ORU Coming to Town

Its looking like its likely to be IPFW in the first round of the Summit Tourney. If true, hopefully we can continue to get away with the dirty play that always happens when we play them.

I think ORU may have been leading the rebounding battle in the first half or it was very close then the Jacks just took it away from them fininshing something like 45-27

This will be the key in Sioux Falls. Playing three games in 4 days will be tough for ORU,especially if Luper does have foot problems and with Bigham still recovering from the knee. We need to hope UMKC holds on to the 3 seed, and that they get the Golden Eagles into a 40 minute track meet in the semi-final on Monday.

imo, rather odd statement coming from finkbeiner---paraphrasing: we took our focus off of winning the league championship a couple weeks ago. huh?

since this is a message board of fans, we are allowed "what ifs", eh? if the jacks could have taken better care of the ball, (cut down on to's by 10) this would have definitely warranted the "kerblastification" comment. jacks could have won this by AT LEAST 30. wow, didn't see this coming---as i posted earlier, i thot jacks would win at home, but, would pull away at the end with free throws. great win, ladies!

I do not believe it get any easy for Coach Finkbeiner in March. A lot of Summit teams have figured out how to beat ORU and Luper. Like I replied to Terry V. when he posted that Luper was the alltime leading Summit league scorer. I stated that it came witn NO NCAA appearances. There is no I in team but there is an I in Kevi.

Eide should be POW. She shut down the all-time scoring leader. Luper did not play as if she had foot issues.

I would take a player like Kevi on the Jackrabbits any day. She is a great player. It isn't her fault that ORU built that team around her and Jaci. When Jaci went down with the knee injury, it became a one woman show. If Bingham is getting healthy like it looked last night, ORU becomes very scary.
-South Dakotan by birth, a Jackrabbit by choice.

I agree, let's not think we can steam roll thru ORU next time we play.Confidence is a great thing, but over-confidence will set you up for failure.Remember,Fink will go over the game film over and over, and they might have a totally different game plan next time we meet.Kevi won't alway's shoot as badly as she did last night, although, i think our defense had something to do with that.
Great job by AJ and the players. This win WAS important considering we lost to them previously the last five games in a row,i think. It's good for the mindset to finally get the monkey off your back.Or,we could repeat what we did and dominate again, who knows, but when all the money is on the table(Summit Tournament) it usually turns out to be a dog fight.
