First chance to post since the game. I thought our team took a big step forward last night. ORU came in with the same plan to press and attack us with their defense which has been succesful the last few years. It took a couple of minutes to get settled but they figured it out and turned it into opportunities on the offensive end. There were times it was succesful for ORU and kept them in the game. Overall, that was the most aggressive our team has been at beating the pressure defense.

Sunnarborg is really playing well. She was so physical last night and dominated underneath. Dietel played one of her best games. Loved how Palluch penetrated and took a couple of pull-up 10-footers earlier in the game. KEEP DOING IT!!! Eide was the spark in the second half. THE DEFENSIVE EFFORT FROM ALL WAS OUTSTANDING!!!

They are peaking right now and are as dominant as I can remember heading into the Summit Tournament.

Still thought it was a week crowd for a game of that magnitude.

Fink will go over the game film over and over, and they might have a totally different game plan next time we meet.

They won't. Finkbeiner's not that kind of a coach. If he was, they'd have switched to a man defense and stopped trying to strip the ball once SDSU started having success passing under the zone to the post. But I doubt that they even practice man defense at ORU.

I'm not going to say they're a one-trick pony, but this is basically the same ORU team that existed before Kevi & Jaci, whereas AJ has clearly evolved as a coach since '08/09. Once Kevi & Jaci graduate, it'll be the same trapping zone, but with less capable guards, therefore less success.

If I remember correctly, Coach Fink didn't use a pressing/trapping zone until the 2nd game we played them in the 2008-2009 season, and it was pretty effective as the Jacks had to eek out a win in the final minutes. The next year, they got Luper and Bingham and they switched to the pressing/trapping zone almost exclusively.

As far as adjustments this year, Coach Fink seems to alternate between zone schemes when making adjustments. I believe I saw in this last game ORU use a 1-3-1 full court press, a 2-1-2 (aka 2-3) trapping zone, and a 2-3 base (non trapping) zone.

You're right. They played a 2-3 early in the shot clock, when the Jacks would set up beyond the perimeter. That's when the Jacks would try and draw a 4th defender out, leaving a 2 on 1 in the interior.

However, I remain unimpressed by Fink. ORU shot abysmally last night, and I don't see them being anything special after Luper, as they were nothing special before Luper.

OTOH, I think AJ has learned enough to be less susceptible to those trapping zones. Sure it's taken a couple years, but I think they've got sets that work very well against them now. I think they got outside themselves in Tulsa, else they would've spanked ORU there as well.

While I agree AJ has done a great job of adapting to zones, this team's lack of a true ball handler/PG does leave them a bit susceptible to a press. The Jacks have always seemed to have the most problems with quick guards. Of course, it's been that way every season and we still seem to come out on top.
