    Why does it bother me:

    1) The supposed top recruit in the state of SD would sign with our rival only to be able to have extra motivation the next four years to play above his level against us.

    2) I have said it before that i believe SDSU needs to land one of the next top recruits from SD that is garnering D1 attention from mid majors and more established programs than us to if nothing else serve as an example for the naysayers and future recruits from SD that it might be "just fine" to stay home and play d1 ball.

    3) I have all the faith in Nagy and Larson and their decisions, but i know i can't assume, and i would expect you can't either that Bassett is better than Tviedt. First of all it is a crapshoot at this stage of their careers to guess who is the better college player, and second of all it falls into the thinking that just because he isn't from SD he is a better player. Like i said i have confidence that he is based on our recruiting of him early in his junior year, but nobody knows for sure.

Like i said, Tviedt may have given us the "no thanks" or maybe the coaches think we did get the best two players, but i still don't want Tveidt to end up at NDSU then. That was my point.

      Re: 2006 Recruits

I understand your reasoning, but I think its a little bit of an over reaction. First, I don't think that Basset is better because hes from out of state, I think hes a better recruit because of raw athletisism. The same goes for Cordova. At this stage I think that Tviedt maybe a little more skilled, but Cordova has the genetics and body type to be a succesful PF in college. Tviedt might turn out to be a good player in college too, maybe hes the next mike miller. Who knows. At this stage though I think that Nagy took the two most athletic players out of the group, and thats all you can ask for, short of him predicting the future. Is he going to be right all the time? Probably not, but thats the sport. We have 13 scholarships, and Nagy has the players he wants, we can't have everybody.
As for landing one of the next top recruits from South Dakota, I think we have. I would be more worried about Cordova having a dream year this year, and somebody taking him away from us.

        Re: 2006 Recruits

With out a question, Coaches Nagy and Larson have spent a great deal of time evaluating. Some times the kids dont want to come too. We never know how any recruit is going to far as a recruit and credit to the progam until about the second or third year. The big disappointment for me so far has been Joe Green and the other guy who could shoot the lights out. Thanks to Troy Larson's Iowa connections we got these guys. Two are still here and two are gone so we never really know how things are going to work out until their eligibilty has expired by 50 per cent or more.

Jake Wenig (the guy who could shoot the lights out) didn't/couldn't play defense. Joe Green didn't seem capable of dealing with Coach Nagy's intensity. Hence, they are both gone.

Looking forward to the continued evolution of the SDSU teams. Basketball has had to take a step backwards due to unforeseen complications. Things are headed back to the right track, lets hope they continue that way.

            Doc:
The reasons for leaving for Wenig and Green were never a mystery to me, but the point I was trying to make is that you never know how a recruit is going to pan out until half of eligibilty is gone. Maybe Steve Holdren and Matt Jones are the exceptions but again a health angle comes into play with Matt Jones, but the others such as Joe Green did not live up to Nagy's intensity and demands. Off campus, I understand Joe was a model athlete in training. For that I am disappointed and I certainly dont hold Troy Larson responsible.

I am saying no recruit is a sure bet. They may look like real players in AAU games and on video, but until they get to campus and experience campus life, one never knows what will transpire. I dont think we are in disagreement, just stating the same idea differently.

Yes we hope we are making progress with the new class of recruits, but I fear we are still at the same crap table about to roll the bones. ;D

The Denison kid will be a good player for SDSU. Wenig, although a very good HS player, always had a 'character issue', Green, well he was big.

I noticed Anthony Cordova was at the game along with some of his buddies from Roosevelt. He seemed to be getting into the game and was chatting with Nagy and his future teamates at halftime.

On the way up to Brookings for the Beef Bowl, I was listening to the SF Roosevelt vs Pierre game on 1140 am and they said that two coaches from UW-Milwaukee were in the stands to watch. Since UW-Milwaukee doesn't have football, you gotta think they were there to see Michael Tveidt.

It's a good thing he can play basketball because he had a tough day playing QB. From the Argus:

                  http://www.argusleader.com/apps/pbcs...30/1002/SPORTS

. . .The 6-foot-7 Tveidt was held to 2-for-7 passing for 31 yards and three interceptions, and he was flagged for intentional grounding in the end zone for a Roosevelt safety. . . .

If they flew in to watch him play football the Panthers must be interested.

                  Go State! ;D

                    Re: 2006 Recruits

That's the thing about recruiting that many people don't think about. Competing college coaches feel compelled to attend other athletic events to try to prove their love for prospects. So, these coaches drive and fly to places so that a kid will get a fleeting glimpse of them in an audience.

Recruiting is a tough, tough business.

                      Re: 2006 Recruits

I had an opportunity to see the Roosevelt and Pierre game and while Tvedit is a heck of basketball player and athlete he was not the best athlete on the field. That clearly was Anthony Thompson at 6'3 and 230 and playing both fullback and defensive end. I would love to see Thompson at SDSU but I know he is being persued by some big name schools for both wrestling and football. The Sioux Falls schools for the second straight year continue to beat up the rest of the state. They are deeper, bigger, stronger and faster for the most part. I felt bad for Tveidt as he played quarterback, safety, kicker, punter and ran back kicks and still had to run to the sideline to get every play. Quincy Christie another DI recruit was completely shut down by the Roosevelt defense and was absolutley flattened on a Roosevelt punt return for a touchdown.

Casey Harriman of Battle Creek-Ida Grove who the Jacks were apparently interested in some time back recently narrowed his choices to Wyoming and Creighton and committed to Creighton this week.

Congrats to Tate on his commitment. He probably wasnt the physical guard that we need to compete at the Division I level.

Congrats to Tate. With him and Begemen the Coyotes should be set at guard for a while. I think both are excellent players just not DI material.

They are indicating over on Bisonville that Michael Tveidt has verballed to NDSU over Wisconsin Milwaukee. I guess we will see Tveidt in Frost at least once a year. It will be interesting to see who develops into the better college player Cordova or Tveidt.
