    Re: 2006 Recruits

This is an interesting post from someone over on the Argus forum board who seems to have a lot of information about instate basketball recruits that we have discussed here.

Don't worry this isn't the only thing you aren't aware of and you aren't alone as this site is filled with a ton of posters who don't have a clue about what is taking place in the recruiting world and how the whole process works. What is ironic is you are all crying this year because SD doesn't have a kid ranked in the top 150 or top 100. Good thing because you would all be on here blasting that athlete if he were highly ranked and stating how over rated they were. Like Poppers I too hate posting on this site but when I read the garbage that is posted on here I can't help to clear the air. Currently there are four seniors in SD who are being recruited at the D1 level or have accepted offers to that level. Of course when they all sign at that level (if they do) you can jump on the over rated band wagon like some of you have with Cordova already.

    Zach Finley
Is being recruited by Princeton, Pacific, Marshall, Augie and NSU. All schools except for Princeton have offered. Before you blast away about Princeton please remember that the Ivy league schools do not offer scholarships and he wouldn't receive any athletic aid if he attended Princeton.

    Michael Tveidt
Has been offered by UW Milwaukee, Ball State, UNC Wilmington, Northern Illinois, UC Santa Clara, NDSU. He is also receiving some interest from Richmond, West Virginia and a few calls from Kansas State. Tveidt has narrowed his list down and has already shut down talks and offers from some smaller D1's including Lehigh, Akron, Toledo and Colgate. No schools in Oklahoma expressed an interest. Four schools from the Missouri Valley expressed interest including Wichita State, Bradley, Northern Iowa and Creighton but none of the schools offered and none are continuing the recruiting process. Phone calls and letters are a part of the recruiting process but are not offers and really don't mean a thing in the big picture. Regardless of opinion Tveidt has only been offered by mid major schools. It is doubtful that even if he waited until spring to sign that any schools higher than the mid major level would come knocking on his door.

    Tate Pesicka
Has been offered by Augie and USD. He has received calls from some smaller D1 schools including Davidson, Eastern Kentucky, UNC Wilmington, Richmond, NDSU and Samford. While Washington State did call to inquire no serious recruitment from that level has taken place. If no D1 offers come Tate's way prior to the early signing period he could generate some interest from that level if he were to sign late. It is doubtful that he'll receive any offers higher than a small to mid major D1 school.

    Anthony Cordova
Received some interest from smaller D1 schools including Florida Atlantic, Colgate and turned down an offer from Augie. As to the merits of his ability to play at SDSU, those who question his ability have not seen him play recently and certainly didn't see him play this summer. When all is said and done he has the capibility of being the best player in the 06 class. SDSU had one offer to give. They couldn't afford to wait on Michael Tveidt and could have signed other players from around the country. They chose Cordova because they see a ton of potential and saw him play this summer. I trust Coach Nagy's judgement over the HS kids and arm chair coaching adults on this site any day.

While the many postings on the recruiting subject on this site have been entertaining the list above is accurate. If you want to know the source feel free to contact the coaching staffs from the schools listed above. I can't remember a time in recent years or anytime when 4 SD athletes were recruited at the D1 level out of one class. If all 4 sign D1 offers it would be the first time in recent years (if ever) to happen.

SDSU only has one scholarship to give for 2006?

Don't forget Thomas Bassett who committed to us long ago. So we have two for sure, but I too thought we had at least one more to give. Either way I am very happy with our '06 class so far, but it would be nice to make a run at Michael Tveidt.

I think the following would be the scholarship players in 2006/2007.

          Kleinjan,Cadwell,Gilbert,Beran,Loney,Berte ,Frias,Bilitz,
Engen,Hornby and then Bassett and Cordova. This is 12 scholarship players and I believe 13 is the max.

            JACKGUYII,

That looks about right for our scholarship athletes.  You are also right that 13 is the Max for Men (15 for Women).  We catch a break with Casey and Yackley having alternate means to finance college.  As they are both quality athletes that could have received athletic scholarships, IMHO.

Some guys that are being looked at by area schools including the Jacks. Hard to determine if some of the South Dakota's are SDSU or USD.

It appears Roman Gentry has backed out of his committment to Northern Iowa. No word on where he is going though. Towards the end it talks about some possibilities, but no one knows for sure - they are just guesses. Here is a link to the news.

Gentry pulls back on verbal commitment to UNI

Nearly two months after verbally committing to the Northern Iowa men's basketball program, the 6-foot-4 Sioux City East senior pulled his commitment last week.

"I was very surprised," Sioux City East coach Jeff Vanderloo said Friday afternoon. "I thought UNI was a great fit. They have quality guys, a great coaching staff, and their program is one of the best."

Gentry, who averaged 18.9 points and 10.8 rebounds last season for the Black Raiders as a power forward, originally selected the Panthers over the likes of Creighton, Drake, UNLV and Wyoming.

But according to Vanderloo, Gentry has aspirations of playing in the Big Ten or Big 12 conferences. However, as of now, no school from either league has offered him a scholarship.

"Roman's a great player, and certainly at times he has shown he has Big Ten, Big 12 potential," Vanderloo said. "Hopefully, he'll have a successful season this year and attract the interest he's wanting." . . .

                    Re: 2006 Recruits

I don't think there is any chance the Jacks will get back in the Gentry lottery if he is trying to upgrade to a more prestigious conference then the Missouri Valley. My only concern is now that UNI has one scholarship they may have interest in one of our verbal committs in Thomas Bassett or Anthony Cordova. Depending on need maybe they will persue Michael Tveidt. Gentry at 6'4 is more of a slashing small forward or maybe a shooting guard in college. The times I have seen him he is better around the basket than launching it from deep range. At 6'4 playing big inside is not as easy in college. He is a very good player who may have gotten some assurances from a bigger school that they would grant him a scholarship. I wouldn't count Iowa out as they have lost out on two high profile players Isaih Dahlman from Braham Minnesota has committed to Michigan State and Jason Bohannon from Marion Iowa who has committed to Wisconsin. Steve Alford might save face by getting Gentry who is considered one of the top players in the state.

                      JackguyII:
Not to put you down, but I dont see UNI going after Bassett or Cordova. The recruiting world looks so different from the coaches angle than it does from a typical SDSU fan view which represents 439 members as of this morning.  I think UNI has looked at both of Bassett and Cordova and they may be on the UNI radar screen, but I would bet UNI has others to quickly fill their choice from Gentry's departure. I would not be concerned too much, but I think Bassett was on campus last year so I think he knows where he wants to go for basketball and education.

I might add the kid who is getting looks and consideration from Princeton would be a fool to turn it down, especially if he has the grey matter to cut the academic standards and graduate.  He/she who graduates from Ivy League schools have a big chance at big jobs. I have a close friend who's son graduated from Brown. This son ran cross country at Brown and his grand father was once on the SDSU faculty. It cost plently to make up the difference between scholarship money and actual cost, but this young man is now making good money.

I think it was stated by Coach Nagy in the ESPN article that we had two schollies to give out for 2006 and we are done already (I assume Cordova and Bassett).  I was thinking we should have one more available scholarship to give out.   Anybody have any ideas as to where or who the other schollie is going to?
As said above it would be nice to have one more to make a run at another player.

I wonder if Matt Jones is still considered a scholarship player even though he is not on the current roster? As for Bassett and Cordova nothing is definite until the ink has dried. I'm hopeful they will honor their verbal committments but remember they are 18 year old kids  who both had wonderful summers on the AAU courts and there are a lot of vulture coaches who might not have landed their preferred recruits and are looking for players who have a lot of potential upside like these two. I guarantee Nagy and the coaching staff are taking nothing for granted and staying as close to those two as the NCAA allows.

I understand we don't have any scholarships left, and maybe Tviedt gave us the "thanks but no thanks" already, but i sure as hell hope this post doesn't become a reality...

Why does that bother you? What do you want, we can't sign every player in SD every year. We had two scholarships to give, we gave them out to who the coaches thought was the best. Bottom line, Basset is probably better than either Cordova or Tviedt, so we took him plus one of the other two who we thought was the best. If thats the situation for all of the recruiting against NDSU we'll be doing pretty good.

I don't think II is offended, just pontificating. I would hope no top recruit would make the same mistake D Tenbrook did and go to the inferior Dakota school when it comes to BB. Denver, what a bad decision. Almost as bad as the girl from Wagner who left for USD. To each their own, I guess.
