The issue I have is when we do get new posters or old posters who raise some legitimate issues (sometimes critical) lets hear them out. Someone felt compelled to start a topic about "What's wrong with the mens team" then lets discuss what we think is wrong! If people don't think anything is wrong and this is the natural evolution of a new DI program so be it. I just have issues with people who pounce on those who do want to voice their opinion.

This is a nice post, how does it address the issue of you claiming that I think that SF_Rabbit_Fan is an imposter?

Next if it is ok for SF_Rabbit_Fan to express his opinion, why is it not ok for me or anyone else to give my/their opinion when it conflicts with SF_Rabbit_Fan's? Should we make a rule that new posters get to make 10 or 25 or maybe 50 posts before anyone is allowed to disagree with them?

I will send you a private message so we can allow everyone else to discuss what they think is wrong with the Jacks.

That is fine, but just so you know I don't appreciate you calling me out publicly and then not responding in kind.

My post specifically did not call you out for SFRabbitfan post but rather in general we have been quick to assume a poster has showed up to create chaos!

Re: What's wrong with the men's team?

I hope that I am wrong but it is doubtful that the Jacks troubles will be fixed by next year. The Jacks do not have a dominant point guard nor do they have a leader on this team. No guards in the 2006 recruits and only one guard in the 2005 class.

The way this is heading - it might be 3-4 years before the Jacks are even competitive. Jacks do not have any more scholarships for 2006 - if an impact JUCO player is available for next year - Jacks will not be able to get him. 30% shooting and 25-30 turnovers a game is not getting it done.

We have to look at the experience of the team. We are playing freshman, sophs', and juniors. This is a very young team. With youth, you will have turnovers. It will get better in time.

Re: What's wrong with the men's team?

I think the question that everyone has including the coaches is how good can these young players get. There is the god given talent they have and there is the intangible of how much they want to improve by working hard and listening to their coaches. I think as we continue to go through this process and gain conference membership we will continue to see the talent improve. I know how Nagy is capable of coaching when the talent is comparable on both teams. I don't know how he is capable when their is a talent gap like we have now. I think the coaches are finding they need to work harder and smarter than ever before just like the players . The coaches we are going up against are more capable then we experienced in DII or they wouldn't be there.  I think Scott has a good idea of the footprint to get us there with the time he spent being around the University of Illinois program. Getting quality athletes to SDSU and Brookings is not going to be easy and it will take time! Do we have the right players and coaches to make this gigantic leap? Only time will tell.

Re: What's wrong with the men's team?

I think we have quite a few quality athletes on this team but that it will take some time for them to come together as a unit and play as a team. Add to that the turmoil created by the Holdren injury. Plus, we were already shorthanded since we're redshirting four excellent freshman prospects. We all knew there would be some growing pains. The goal, I think, is to become consistent winning program and I think the roadmap is there... patience is the keyword here. What is becoming obvious is that the gap between D2 and D1 is greatest in men's basketball.

Re: What's wrong with the men's team?

I wasn't around and did not follow SDSU's mens basketball during there successful d2 years. I have heard, may or may not be reasonable to assume, that the team this year or last year is no where near the level talent wise as they were in years past. Neverminding the new D1 competition, teams like morningside, wayne state, sw. state, etc, we would be quite handidly while we've lost and struggle with them the last two years. I think the criticism of coach Nagy might have some weight. Bias of past years put aside the team just does not have talent or experience they had in previous years, which is ultimately the coaches responsibility. However like every else, what goes around, comes around. We're currently going through some tough years with more to come in the future. We just have to keeps our heads up.

I'm curious as to what the scholarship situation is for the men's team. How many allowed by the NCAA, how many do we have currently. A bit off topic, but just wondering.

I guess I wouldn't say the talent isn't as good.  I have been going to State games since 1988.  We have had some really good teams in that time.  This team is very athletic.  The one thing it doesn't have is the experience.  I can't remember a team in the past where we started so many young players.  Sure, we might have had a couple of sophs' playing some good minutes but nothing like this.  We just turn the ball over too much.  The teams in the past have had a point guard who could handle the ball without turnovers. We are asking a shooting guard to be a point guard and there is a difference between the responsibilities.  Andre is asked too much if he is to be the point.  I don't want this to sound as if I don't like Matt because it is just the opposite.  He is a great talent but I would like to see him used as a shooting guard.  Save his legs for his 3-point shooting instead of bringing the ball up the court.  I'll shut up now ;D

I'm gonna say Heier isn't on scholarship and say Andy. Ben, Frias, and Berte are. That would be 4 scholarships State would have to offer next year during the signing period and 5 if Heier is included. The rest of this year will give Nagy and the coaches a good idea on what positions to focus on for recruiting. I'm sure they have an idea already so they can start watching juniors.

13 is the NCAA max for Men's teams, and I think we are at 13.
