    Re: Butler University

I noticed that a guy named Tom Maurer was reffing the game. Does anyone know if this is the Tom Maurer of Madison, SD. He was the AD at DSU (probably about 7 or 8 years ago.

Welcome to Men's Division I basketball. This is a 4-6 year work in progress. SDSU doesn't have the horses now to compete with strong DI teams at home or on the road. The future is bright but it isn't going to happen over night. Moral victories will be plenty but still actual victories will be few. Coach Nagy is not the problem, even the best college coaches couldn't win with the current SDSU roster against the schedule they have this year.

Arguably the best player is out and the freshman class potentially has some athletes who will contribute down the road. However, the team still lacks quality guards and won't beat good teams until that is address. Hard to compete when you can't get the ball in position to score.

Cadwell has potential but needs some help. Hornby is in the wings but we need to add others.

The Tom Mauer that worked last night's game is not the same Tom Mauer that was the AD at DSU.

Last night's official is a longtime resident of the Twin Cities. His older brother Kenny is a veteran NBA official.

I've had the opportunity to work college basketball with both of the Mauer brothers.

          Happy New Year!!!

Isn't he related to the Twins Joe Mauer? Father, uncle or something of the sort?

I think you may be right. But I can't confirm.

                Re: Butler University

I've seen some high-powered basketball including a couple of Final Fours.  I was in Frost for last night's Butler game.  I thought Butler was very, very disciplined and if that team had a seven footer, they'd have the tools to challenge and beat any team in the country.

They were a class act.  They didn't take any bad shots and every one of them shot well.  They have at least 8 guys who are interchangeable.  All could handle and protect the ball.  All had better-than-average leaping ability.  All played sticky defense: just the right amount of bumping without getting called.  They played with absolute confidence without losing focus on their opponent.

That was a first class ball club and they were worth the price of admission to Frost.  Even though I walked out dejected about the performance of the 'Rabbits, I have to keep in mind that we have a lot of athleticism on our team and these are tremendous learning experiences that WILL pay off.

I hope Coach Nagy and his young team find the way to try to get up for every game.  It will happen.  Nagy just has to keep following his best instincts.  It will happen.  We will get older and more experienced.  We will win.

                    Re: Butler University

I listened to the game on the radio, and quit listening halfway through the second half. Sad to say, but I'm glad I didn't spend the time and money traveling to Brookings to watch the game. :-[ It sounded like we caught them on a hot night and they caught us on a particularly bad night.

Won't say much else as I wasn't at the game, and I am celebrating the new year with less radical and inflamatory posts. ;D ;D
