I could see callahan sarget and Kai, all avg close to 15 point agame and cordova 10 and several off the bench getting 5-7. we have something that can be better then we think, just need to prove it in confrence. great to see Kai shooting well to start the year. With the depth and experince we have back, i can see those 3 having great years. did the freshman get in much? i wasnt able to listen to the game much, but I heard palarcas name a few times so that is great for him he can either start i think or is a great PG off the bench. seems he will get better every year.
I share your enthusiasm about where things are headed. Winning last night was a big hurdle and getting that first conference road win is the other big hurdle in my book. I think that will be cleared early on in conference play.

What kind of rotation is nagy looking for? I would have thought we could have seen White Fiegen Engen Rader more in the game, espically up 20 plus there in the 2nd half. Is nagy going to be more leaning on the returning players to be the difference or will any other freshman make much of an impact. Not questioning his choice but a big lead and if your not planning to redshirt them, why not give them some early playing time really considering how well the returners have been.

My only thought on this goon would be that last year the team had trouble closing out games. This was Nagy teaching the older guys as much as it would have been teaching the younger guys. Just my $.02

I can go for that. build confidence while you can and then let the freshman earn their time in practice and as the year goes along.

After this start to the season, I am ready to prognasticate more games this year. What are some areas of concern compared to strengths for this team? About all I can come up with is lack of winning confidence and confrence road record last 2 years as a weakness, but most every other category is a major strength for us.

I think the point is a strength this year... With Wolters and Palarca running the point that means that Sargent, Callahan and Moss can play off the ball..

Perimeter defense is a strength along with the bench.... We went 9 deep without using 3 freshman who are good...

I think the key will be the Center position.... If Cordova gets into foul trouble we may be in trouble.... His abilities down low allows for the guards to get open shots, and when he is not in there we have a huge fall off in quality.... After Cordova we either go with a freshman (Rader, Feigen) or with Engen a guy who when getting playing time in the past it wasn't at the Center....

I can agree with that. With those 2 running the point that will help. would like to see the freshman get in at the 4 maybe so Kai can be at the 3. or are we still better with Kai at the 4? I see ball control and tempo and ability to run plays as a strenght as well. I agree with cordova being vital to how we play. Hopefully 3 point shooting can be a major strenght this year as well, previous years I would have said it to be a weakness but not now. depth height and multi skilled players. Also havent really mentioned it but the over all atheliticness of the team seems greatly improved where other years we seemed to have been lacking in that department.

                    Re: GAme Thread: Wyoming!

The interview with Kai was interesting. He said Nagy stressed all week that they needed to walk onto the court expecting to win.

In the article today, Sargent backed that up (IIRC) by saying that they knew they could score off Wyoming, based on the defense they played.

Credit Nagy for that. SDSU was prepared. They knew they could score against Wyoming, they believed that they could beat them, expected to win, and well----what did Yogi Berra say? "baseball is 90 percent mental and the other half is physical"

One thing I thought the Jacks did a lot better in was closing before the half.... how many times had they in the past few years either go from a bucket or 2 down to double digets or even half a lead to being behind.... still need to start better... I think they were down 4-2 under 17:00 and came out a little sloppy in the second.... but I'm nitpicking... a win is a win....

Argus article about the Wyoming game. Some really good quotes:

                        SDSU men rout Wyoming, 77-61
Patrick Schmiedt • For the Argus Leader • November 14, 2009

LARAMIE, Wyo. - South Dakota State has nearly an identical roster to last year - and gave a look Friday as to why that could pay off this winter.

The Jackrabbits built a 20-point halftime lead and pushed it to as many as 28 in the second half in a 77-61 victory over Wyoming in both teams' season opener before 5,370 fans.

"To have a 20-point lead at half, but then to be able to withstand some of the pressure and push it out to 28 (is encouraging)," SDSU coach Scott Nagy said. "In the past, we've just kind of folded up and let teams back in the game. Tonight we didn't.

"I really feel like the team is growing up."

Clint Sargent carried the Jackrabbits early, nailing five of seven 3-pointers in the first 16-plus minutes to help his team take a 20-point halftime lead, 45-25.

The Jacks made eight of their 13 3-point shots in the first half, but it wasn't just a long-distance assault - they also exploited the Cowboys' extended defense for several easy backdoor layups.

Sargent finished with a team-high 18 points and Kai Williams, who nailed four of his five 3-pointers, added 17. The 3-point barrage was nothing unexpected, Sargent said.

"We knew going in that they were going to give us some shots, just from the way they played screens," Sargent said. "We knew if we came in here and did what we know we can do, we'd be all right."

“They are a veteran group and they ran a lot of sets that they never showed on an exhibition film,” Schroyer said. “They had us back on our heels. They are a good basketball team, and we played like freshmen and sophomores. We had that ‘deer in the headlight’ look.

It would appear that Nagy's practice of playing exhibition games close to the vest paid off. They might have beaten Dakota State by 40 but to what purpose?

Too bad we lost that scrimmage to Minnesota State, we could be undefeated right now.

Great performance, great win, played with intensity and showed poise that we haven't in the last few years.
