    Re: Southwest Minnesota State

Teajackrabbit, you got me. After reading your post I went and did a little research on this topic. I checked four other conferences from NCAA D1 and looked at the 2008-2009 schedules of each team in those conferences to see how many of them actually played D2 or NAIA schools. Here's what I found:

    BIG SKY CONFERENCE-9 teams
1 team played all D1 schools
    6 teams played 1 game against a D2/NAIA opponent
    2 teams played 2 games against a D2/NAIA opponent

SUN BELT CONFERENCE-13 teams (split conference)
3 teams played all D1 schools
8 teams played 1 game against D2/NAIA opponent
2 teams played 2 games against D2/NAIA opponent

    MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE-9 teams
3 teams played all D1 schools
4 teams played 1 game against D2/NAIA opponent
2 teams played 2 games against D2/NAIA opponent

    MISSOURI VALLEY CONFERENCE-10 teams
6 teams played all D1 schools
4 teams played 1 game against D2/NAIA opponent
0 teams played 2 games against D2/NAIA opponent

So....I guess I have to be a big person and say I should have done a little research before commenting on this matter. I still don't agree with it at all, but looking at these schedules leads me to believe it's done a lot more than I thought.

    Peace.

JamesJacks - Thanks bud, cool that you did the research and all. Thing is, the elite of the elite (KU, UNC, Duke, etc) for whatever reason schedule non-D1-patsies every year. If they can do it, no reason we can't. I mean, let's be honest, no Summit team anytime in our lifetime will make a case for an at large bid. We need notches in the win column at pretty much any cost.

      Guess; SDSU 80 SMSU 62

I would be if I was them. Exhibition game or not we should never ever lose to a DII team!

Grand Valley State beat Michigan State two years ago in an exhibition game and Michigan State made it to the Sweet 16 that year. Personally, I don't think losing to someone in an exhibition game is that big of a deal when we don't run most of our offense and are trying to get use to game play

Regardless of whether we are running our offensive or not if you don't have enough raw talent on the court to run out a DII team there is something wrong. Pride alone should be enough incentive.

I would agree the loss was unexcuseable, but it happened, but I also read something that has been long forgotten and will no doubt get raving reviews from our USD friends. In 1947, Rube Hoy took his Coyotes to a tournament that included the Bradley University Braves. The Bradley team was very good and infact was rated no 1 in the country until they played USD and lost. How do you think those Bradley fans felt about that? Just like us very embarrassed. S#it happens.

Gee you're right, Michigan State didn't have enough raw talent to beat Grand Valley State...

Anything can happen in sports. The Yankees have the most raw talent of anyone in baseball and haven't won anything since early this decade.

I don't give a shiX about Michigan State. If your fine with SDSU losing an exhibition game against a DII school from Marshall, MN so be it. I'm not and more importantly I doubt the players and coaches are. A loss like that hurts morale and perception of the program and gives plenty of fodder to a poster from Southwest State. It's even more pathetic that your trying to justify the loss.

Truth be told - I don't think we had the raw talent on the team at the start of last year to beat ver many teams. If you look at who started for the Jacks to start last season and who ended the season we were a very different team. I love our Jacks but to not run an offense and lose to a Dll team in Frost - unacceptable. I think it set the players mind set back several weeks. Exibition or not you play to win.

I've said it before and I will say it again. Troy Wipf played more minutes in last year's exhibition against SMSU then he played in all the regular season games combined.

Yes you're right I'm pathetic because I'm not getting all pissed off over an exhibition loss. Exhibition means NOTHING. That is why it is called an exhibition.

I've pointed out the Michigan State loss as an example of an exhibition game meaning nothing. Want another example? The Detroit Lions went 4-0 in preseason games last year and we all know how much that mattered in the regular season.

Exhibition games are used to go over things and correct little mistakes, they don't mean a damn thing in the grand scheme of things.
