From what I've heard it's more of a 70/30 our way....hopefully. And of course, Cam is friends with him, which is how we found him in the first place.

According to this site, http://www.national-letter.org/dates/ , today is the last day to sign a letter of intent for men's bball for the 2006-2007 season.  I would assume this means we would hear something about the Canadien recruit today or real soon.  Does anybody have any news or know any different?

We already knew about this signing, but it is a nice story none the less.

SENECA — One of the most storied athletic careers in Seneca High School history has led Garrett Callahan to a spot with an NCAA Division I basketball program.

Callahan, a two-time all-state selection who helped lead the Fighting Irish boys basketball team to a 66-1 record over the past two seasons and the 2005-06 IHSA Class A state championship, chose South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D., as his collegiate destination earlier this month. . . .

“It’s a Division I school, and that’s something I’ve looked for for a while,” Callahan said. “They’ve got a nice school and gym. I looked them up online and saw a lot of good things. They’ve got a good coach (Scott Nagy) too, so that pretty much did it.”

Another alluring aspect of SDSU for Callahan is its location. Brookings had a population of 18,504 according to the 2000 census, meaning it resembles the small-town atmosphere of Seneca.

“It’s a lot like Ottawa or Morris,” Callahan said. “I like it being laid-back like that. The people are real supportive of the sports teams, kind of like here. I met my teammates and they all seem real friendly and its all a good fit for me.”

Nagy believes that Callahan, who averaged 14.4 points a game with 157 assists last season, is the perfect fit for his program as well. . . . (read more)

Is anybody else confused by this quote from Coach Nagy, or is it just me. I can't seem to put the pieces together...who's who?

“What happened was we went through the year with one kid we were redshirting to play at point guard. We also had a junior point guard, so we weren’t recruiting at point guard. Then, we lost a player to injury, so we moved our junior to two-guard and he averaged 15 points-a-game for us,” Nagy said.

“We decided we liked him at shooting guard, so we decided to look for a point guard instead. That’s why we kind of came in late on Garrett. My assistant brought in the tape on him and I knew pretty quickly he was the guy I wanted.”

Does anybody know if it is possible to sign kids after today, or if this date means anything? I seem to remember us signing Frias fairly late last year and possibly a few others the year before...

I figure the "junior" is actually Cadwell, as he's the only one who avg 15 pts for us. I think the red-shirt he's referring to is Cam. The injury is Holdren. My take is Nagy likes both Cadwell and Cam at the 2 gaurd and Callahan will play the point for what looks to be a 3 gaurd line-up.

If I remember correctly, a player cannot sign a letter of intent after the last day. However, the player can simply enroll in classes in the fall and be on the team, receive a scholarshop etc. but there is no commitment until the player enrolls.

Players can sign a letter of intent after the signing day, but it isn't binding for either side.

                        Re: Jackrabbits add point guard

The National Letter of Intent webpage indicates that an athlete can only sign a national letter of intent during the official signing period and that any letter signed before or after that date is null and void. See the response to question 7 in the second set of questions on their FAQ page at the link below. I have copied the question and answer from their page.

                        http://www.national-letter.org/faq/

                        7. When is the permissible time period for signing a National Letter of Intent?
You may sign a National Letter of Intent only during the designated signing period. If you sign a National Letter of Intent outside the appropriate signing period, the National Letter of Intent shall be considered null and void. Presuming you are within the permissible signing period, you and your parent or legal guardian must sign the NLI within 14 days of issuance.

You may find the appropriate signing period for your sport on the Signing Dates page of the National Letter of Intent web site.

Cougars Hope To Land Another Local Star

Hillis hopes highly-touted hoopster chooses Cougs

The University of Regina Cougars hope local basketball phenom Kai Williams will choose to play with the university team in the fall.

The University of Regina Cougars hope tonight's Regina Intercollegiate Basketball League 6A boys final will not be Kai Williams' last on-campus game.

Cougars men's basketball head coach James Hillis is attempting to recruit the highly touted Williams. However, four American colleges are also courting the Campbell Tartans star.

The 6-foot-6 Williams plans to make his decision by mid-June. In the meantime, he is concentrating on his final two weekends of high school basketball -- beginning with this evening's city final against the Sheldon-Williams Spartans. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m., at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health and Sport.

"It's definitely going to be something that we want to win because there are a lot of talented teams in our league this year,'' Williams said. "It would be a big accomplishment.''

Williams played in the 2005 city final, in which Campbell lost a 77-75 heartbreaker to the Balfour Redmen. Williams had 16 points, including two dunks, in that game.

Campbell avenged that defeat six days later by downing Balfour 80-67 in the final at Hoopla -- the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association basketball championships. Williams had a game-high 31 points, including 21 in the first half.

Williams kept honing his skills over the summer, participating in the Nike All-Canada Camp before starring for the Hillis-coached Team Saskatchewan at the 2005 Canada Summer Games in Regina.

Three of Williams' Canada Games teammates -- Paul Gareau (O'Neill Titans), Chris Bodnar (Saskatoon Holy Cross Crusaders) and Kris Heshka (Yorkton Raiders) -- are set to join the Cougars. Their presence is a factor in the U of R's favour, as is the fact that Jamal Williams (Kai's older brother) plays for the Cougars.

"Having Bodnar, Heshka and Gareau going to the U of R definitely makes me want to stay, because I play with those guys in the summer and stuff,'' Kai Williams said. "It's enjoyable to play with them and they're pretty good friends of mine, so it helps out. It kind of makes the decision a lot tougher.''

Kai Williams said he is leaning "60-40'' in the Cougars' direction, but emphasizes that he has yet to visit four American schools. He plans to visit Rice University, the University of Richmond, Eastern Kentucky University and South Dakota State University before making a final decision.

There are several other trips on his agenda.

Williams has been invited to play in the third annual Adidas All-Canadian Game, which is a showcase for Canada's elite graduating high school players. The East-West showdown, to be played April 8, is to be televised by TSN.

The 10-player West squad includes Williams, Heshka and Luther Lions post Marc Van Burck. Van Burck's status is uncertain due to a foot infection which forced him to miss the RIBL playoffs.

Williams and Van Burck are also members of the Canadian junior men's team, which is to head to Germany shortly after the East-West game. The junior squad will also participate in a tournament in San Antonio, Texas, in late June.

When there is a break in Williams' hectic schedule, he takes time to reflect upon where his favourite sport is taking him.

"You always dreamed of it,'' he marvelled. " Obviously, as a little kid playing in the backyard, you're dreaming of being the next Michael Jordan and playing in the NBA.

"For me to actually be able to experience these things, I definitely couldn't have dreamed of it all. Sometimes when I sit back and think about it, I realize how lucky and fortunate I am, because obviously not everybody gets to experience the things I do.''
