Actually in the story it talks about Lewis (D-II), Eastern Illinois (D-I, member of the Ohio Valley Conference), Northern Illinois (D-I, member of the Mid-American Conference), and Colgate (D-I, member of the Patriot League).  I don't know that list of schools seems ok to me.

If that isn't enough, I guess you could focus on the fact that he is a two time consensus first-team all-state point guard who lead his team to the Illinois state championship with a 35-0 record and not worry about what other schools were or weren't interested in him.

      Go State!

P.S.  hoops_guy, who are you a fan of?  You have told us before that you are not a Jackrabbit fan or a Bison fan so I am just curious as to who your team is?  :-?

Try to have all the facts and engage your brain before opening your mouth. Several DI schools in his region were interested. He chose SDSU, a distance away, because he was impressed with Coach Nagy and the program. Keep your foot in your mouth for now.

"I always figured I'd stay in Illinois to play," said Callahan, who admitted he didn't know anything about the program until they started recruiting him about a month and a half ago. "I took a visit out there last week and got a chance to play with and hang out with the players, and they seemed like a good group of guys to be around. Coach Nagy is all about winning and that's what I like."

It appears we got in really late on this kid. Obviously he wasn't set on Lewis or Eastern Illinois and wanted something better. This kid just fell into our lap. Hopefully he is a diamond in the rough.

Cut and pasted below is from the Illinois Prep Bulls Eye.  It is dated April 27, 2006........here is the link - http://ilprepbullseye.com/page36.html  I think you owe me an apology JackMD.  I was not dissing Quincy or Eastern Illinois....I was just listing what was posted elsewhere on our new recruit.  By the way, isn't it also a little scary that a team starts recruiting him this late in the process and he commits?  That means a lot of people weren't knocking on his door in the recruiting process.  Do you have other information that contradicts what I posted previously?

The following are some of the things that we have heard on the spring recruiting trail concerning prospects from the state of Illinois.

            ************************************************** ********************

Garrett Callahan, a 6'2 guard from Seneca High School in Seneca, IL is visiting South Dakota State University this weekend.  Callahan is also considering Eastern Illinois University and Lewis University.  He was instrumental in leading Seneca to the Class A state championship.

jackmd....you stated he had several D1 schools in his region interested.  Which ones?  Please provide a link to this information or how you became aware of it?  Maybe you need to engage your brain before you talk.  I remember you bashing Monson for not recruiting "a talented player in Noah Dahlman", yet you provided documentation that Furman, one of the military academies and NDSU were his final choices.  As someone on here posted, those institutions are not basketball meccas.

                rcjacks,

I think jackmd is addressing hoops_guy.  Your quote, just happens to be inside of hoops_guy's quote.

                Go State!

P.S.  As far as the other D-I schools (Northern Ill. and Colgate) they are listed in the Times story that was posted earlier in this thread (reply #12).

                  Re: Jackrabbits add point guard

I just read the webtimes article. It, unfortunately, states he had an offer from Lewis but only interest from the other schools. That means he didn't have any other D1 offers besides my alma mater -SDSU. With that said, let's hope he is a diamond in the rough....although I am tired of hoping for diamonds in the rough and want players who are diamonds or at least a nice cubic zirconia!

Cubic Zirconia? That would mean they look good, but aren't the real thing. I don't think we want those kind of players.

If you want to be negative about him before he even enrolls in classes you have every right too, but as for me I am excited that a kid with this much talent is coming to SDSU.  Judging from their high school careers one would have to say that Ryan Hoogeveen is probably a diamonds in the rough, and that is why he is an invited walk-on, while Garrett Callahan is a diamond one that was overlooked, for whatever reason, by other schools.  8-)

                        Re: Jackrabbits add point guard

I put my trust in Coach Nagy when it comes to evaluating talent much more than anyone on this board who hasn't even seen Garrett play. We have had our ups and downs with kids coming in and leaving, but we still have to give this kid the benefit of the doubt. I seem to remember a kid from SD a few years back who wasn't recruited by any D1 schools, he went on to be the best freshman player SDSU has ever seen, and then had his career cut short due to illness. Matt Jones would have competed with any d1 player, and i have a feeling Garrett will too.

Here is a link from the Argus board with some info from "Fly Zone" who has a connection with Illinois HS bball. He speaks pretty highly to Garrett's talent, and maybe notes that his weight/size was one reason others passed. Either way, let's not scare him off before he even gets here, we will all be able to see him play next fall from the sounds of it and make judgement then...

Let me first just say, I’m impressed with what I’ve heard about Callahan so far, and think he will be a success at SDSU.

But, am I the only one who sees the irony within the last week.

Underrated kid from Illinois with lots of potential comes to SDSU because of scholarship offer and ability to play DI basketball.  Originally had DII offers on the table, but is picked up by SDSU late in the recruiting season by giving the scholarship that no other DI school is offering.  The kid always hoped and dreamed to play DI for a school in Illinois, but no such school has come to the table.  He is impressed with the coaching staff, so he decides to commit to SDSU, a school he had previously never heard of.

                            Déjà vu:
An impression of having seen or experienced something before.

Lets all just hope Callahan isn’t friends with Mike Miller’s daughter.

PS:  jackmd and rcjack, i thought it was a requirement to disengage your brain when logging on to the board.  I know I usually do. ;D

Good points. My post was directed towards hoops_guy whom, I get the impression, wants to see SDSU/NDSU fail at the DI level. Callahan is someone we can use regardless of who has or hasn't shown interest or offered.

Again, I appreciate rc's points. It would be nice to sign a big name.

As for Noah Dahlman, there is plenty of pressure on Monson to offer him, I assure you of that. However, my comments were more of a cheap shot at a long-standing problem with Monson at his tenure at the U of M. Players leaving, recruits not performing to expectations, losing in-state talent to Big 10 rivals, scheduling weak non-conference teams, etc...

Not sorry if I offended anyone.

Monson's problems sounds like Nagy's......losing Michael Tviedt to NDSU, players leaving, recruits not performing to expectations (Andy Kleinjain over Matt Hammer).......only difference is that Nagy schedules an incredibly tough non-conference schedule instead of a weak one!

Someone on here suggested instead of whining that posters should add some suggestions. Here is one.....consider a coaching change. Maybe Nagy isn't up to the competition and skill of Division 1. I don't know, but what I do know, is that I am sick of a big chunk of the team leaving every year, settling for second-best recruits and losing/hearing of quality in-state players becoming Bison (ugh!). Sure there are some bumps and bruises that come with going D1, but NDSU isn't going through this.
