Bassett came up big tonight.
I don't know if he likes to play inside, but he has to. It's difficult for him when he doesn't get much help. I really was the last six minutes when we made the adjustments. Our young guys aren't ready to play physical with him yet. I was pleased that Mark Engen played better tonight. I was pleased with rebounds tonight, that's one thing we talked about.
Rebounding
Mark almost had a double-double, almost had three freshmen with double-doubles. It does concern me that our major contributors are freshmen, they'll be up and down. Kai is so efficient.
Shooting percentage
One thing is that we played really good teams last year, but we're also a better team this year, taking better shots, not turning the ball over. The big thing is will we be able to stop people inside. We're going to need to make some adjustments, pack things in. We can't let people beat us up like Backus did tonight.
Hornby:
With Cam, his mind is on offense, he'll come off the bench looking to score. He'll take some bad shots, I'll get after him, but the nice thing about him is that that doesn't bother him.
Loney and Yackley:
Mike doesn't have great lift in his legs, but he didn't get hit tonight. Blake just isn't in shape. It will take him a while. He's a big addition to our basketball team, if he hadn't been hurt I think he'd be starting for us now.
Kent State:
Kent has eight or nine straight 20-win seasons, you just don't see teams stay that consistent at the mid-major level. It's a tough start for us. But if we want to go to the NIT, a win like Kent would put you on the map, these are the teams you have to compete against and beat.
What do you need to work on this week:
Our interior defense has to get a lot better, we worked on some zone, we played some tonight, we need to work on getting back and getting into our zone, we missed our spots tonight and gave up some easy shots.
At least the guys are heading to Ohio with a couple exhibition wins. There's definitely some promising new talent on this team. Williams. Bassett. Yackley. Callahan, too, though I haven't seen him play. Lack of size will be the big challenge. An upside is there seems to be good balance in scoring potential. The Jacks might have to shoot more threes this year than in the past because of the team's size and relative depth at guard and small forward. They should be fun to watch after a few more games.
Blilitz will not be availible until after Christmas at the earliest and Brandon while nothing is offical yet but it might be a while before comes back. Williams and Bassett had solid double doubles tonight. Cadwell, wow what can I say. He is becoming an all around offensive threat. 8 assists, kind of reminds me of a kid named Norberg with all the things he can do on offense. Out rebounded them by 12 and only won by 16 kinda ugly but it was a win. Kai is really good.
Coach was critical of Blake about not being in shape but I thought he looked pretty good out there. No lack of hustle with him. Needs to not be worried about taking a shot. Really nice 3 he put up early in the first half.
Bassett and Williams are going to be fun to watch. They were hitting the boards left and right. Blake would fly through the lane for rebounds too.
Need to get a better point guard and put Matt at the 2 guard. Matt isn't a point. He does a good job but he shouldn't be handling the ball all the time.
Should be fun to watch this year though.
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--
Jacks did a pretty solid job in terms of shaking off some of the rust... I was surprised that Dakota State kept the game reasonable, but they've got a solid corps of kids. I called their game against Dana and they have a solid post player in Joe Backus (solid as NAIA goes) and a good point guard in Frankie Calles.
The Coaches have DSU picked to finish 8th in the Dakota Athletic Conference. But if these guys play with the intensity I saw tonight (and not miss so many bunny shots), I think they have a real chance of making some noise in the DAC.

The thought of where DSU was to finish this year in the DAC crossed my mind while watching the game. I did not think it was that low as picked by the coaches. I think they could be a surprise in the DAC. They seem to be well coached as a team. I was impressed with Backus who I have never heard of before the game. I dont follow HS BB so there are a bunch of guys I have never heard of. Calles showed some quickness at times and no doubt has a bigger impact in the DAC.
I think last night we saw the potential of what SDSU has coming on the scene here in the next few years. I dont want to be over optimistic but the true freshmen, Williams and Bassett showed a lot of talent and heart. Yackley being a grandson of Jim Sutton and Bob Yackley, both who played at SDSU for Jim Iverson years ago, is no doubt going to bring many of the casual SDSU fans back to Frost. He has talent and so typical of what we expect from our student athletes based on the good old days. I was very impressed with Yackley. Hornby started to show some talent also, its defense that he needs to learn to play and not worry about offense all the time. High school BB in Canada is behind him. He needs to look forward.
Finally we have more depth than what we have seen in the past two years, so some good things could happen this year. I am just not going to set goals for the program, as those are already set by coaches and players. I am going to let them do their thing.
It's really hard to take too much out of two exhibition games, but I think that this will likely be a frustrating season at times for the team and the fans, particularly in the first half of the season. We have a lot of young players who have great playmaking potential, but they're mostly freshmen and still have a lot of work to do in order to transition to college ball, particularly D-1 basketball. We'll likely surprise a couple teams, but we may end up with a couple of games that will make us wonder why we lost.....
As for DSU's projected finish in the DAC, it's just a crapshoot. In too many cases, polls are just determined by the previous season. Remember, SDSU was picked to finish 4th in the GWFC........

Pretty much right on the money. Any established DI team worth its weight should handle a very young, inexperienced, and probably less talented SDSU team. I'm not saying our kids don't have talent I just expect most DI schools to have more than we do right now. That said, many of these midwest kids don't get a look from big schools because of their level of high school competition. I can easliy name 20 former SDSU players with DI talent.
In short, young team, some talent, no DI team experience, that changes this weekend.

We do not see things as they are, we see things as we are.
I didn't make it in time to if they did it again against Dak St, but the tunnel walk before the SWMS game was a cool idea. I think if it will catch on eventually, especially once the crowd gets the rhythm of the "We want the Jacks" cheer.
I also liked how they showed the tunnel walk for SWMS so as soon as they emerge from the weight room door they are greeted with an arena full of boos followed by a chorus of "We want the Jacks." I don't think there is anything wrong with some friendly boos to greet the opposing team as they jog onto the floor.
Just my .02, but I would like to see this practice continued. ;D

I don't think Nagy was being critical of Yackley being out of shape, rather I think he just pointed out the fact that he isn't in game shape yet because of his ankle injury. Nagy has said several times that Yackley would be starting if he hadn't gotten injured, seems like he thinks pretty highly of the kid.
I quit. Critical is to criticize, which Coach did when he stated Blake wasn't in shape. I don't know how much more in shape Blake can be (he was backing up on defense, running through the lane on offense, getting back on defense). If he isn't in shape, I am going to be amazed when he is. Should I have used a different word than critical, I suppose since one again a comment was read more into than was meant.
Go State and I'm out.

Agree with 02 and bub here. Yackley played exceptional for his first college game after missing practive with an injury. See no reason for bub to quit but to each their own. Opinions are like you know what. Taking things around this site too seriously just isn't worth it.

We do not see things as they are, we see things as we are.
We should've beat General Beadle State College, I mean Dakota State, by 35 points. SDSU provides 13 full ride scholarships and DSU gives out 3-5!!!!! I love our Jacks, but please, no justifying the lowly win against Dakota State. They are predicted to get 8th in the Dac 10. Jackmd is right - we should've manhandled DSU.
I love our Jacks, but we aren't great yet. We are getting better and improving. Nags has a few great gets with Kai Williams and Bassett plus his future classes, but the fact is they should've dominated DSU from the tip off.
